Just got Speedgrade there myself. I intend to use Lightroom, using the visioncolour LOG, first off, export to TIFF's then import and grade in Speedgrade - then export to edit in Vegas. SOunds hectic but it seems the easiest way to use the Osiris M31 Lut.

We'll see.

I have been checking out the Vision Colour Luts , particularly the M31 Cinema version, and noticed it was available for Adobe Photoshop CS6/CC but not Lightroom. Will/can it be possible in the future?

I regularly use an F4  24-105mm lens when shooting RAW/MLV. I must confirm I have never had any issue with changing light while zooming. I also use the VAF-5D2 in camera which definitely makes the lens non-parfocal.

In my experience your problem sounds like a lens based one not a camera or software based one.

Skip step 5 altogether, and make sure the Tiffs have sequential naming.

In Vegas, choose file | import media, select the first image, and tick the option "Open sequence".
In the properties overview that pops up, select "Use custom timecode", and then select "Absolute frames".  Select the desired frame rate and hit ok.
The image sequence will appear in the "Project media" tab.  Drag it onto the timeline.


For bonus points, don't use the crap H.264 encoder in vegas.  Export to lossless AVI, and encode with x264.

Thanks so much for your thoughts above.   Skipping the Quicktime processing is great and the results from x264vfw are incredible. Do you have any particular encoding settings in x264vfw that you use - eg: quality.

Hi all

My PC Windows 7 workflow is this:

1.    MLV captured on 5Dii  (usually 1872 x 796 @ 2:35:1 ratio)    edited for correct frame size

2.    MLV converted to DNGs via MLV Mystic

3.    Import DNGs into Lightroom 4 to grade

4.    Export from Lightroom 4 as TIFFS/Jpegs

5.    Import as Image Sequence in Quicktime 7 Pro (PC non ProRes! )  to export image sequence as H.264 or other

6.    Import video files into Sony Vegas 10 to edit/cut and add audio

7.    Final render (and upscale to 1920 x 816) from Sony Vegas to master

8.    Upload to Vimeo



My main problem at the mo is with step 5 - outputing from Quicktime Pro to a suitable format for editing in Sony Vegas

Does anyone have any suggestions about what codec to use in Quicktime. I have been using H.264 @ 20000kbps and then editing in Vegas and then rendering out at another H.264 @ 20000kbps. However, I sometimes find alot of "mush" and lost detail by the time it ends up on Vimeo - I'm aware of the compression added on upload. I can't help but thinking I'm losing something somewhere in the workflow - the most obvious place to me is the Quicktime conversion H.264 @20000kbps conversion.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Tis great to have the opportunity to dirctly learn from the creator. I really like you pics particularly for the fact that they still look "real". A tendency with all this wow technology is to forget about the real purpose and to use stuff for the sake of it. I will investigate the ML stills possibilites further when time allows. I can only hope to acheive something in the same region as your good self.

Wow. Those are some photos mate. And that is some cave.

I haven't even tried the ML still image possibilities yet. I'm still in awe of the moving ones at the mo. Without sounding too newbie - how did you capture these wonderful images? (camera settings, lenses)

Hi all

Finally decided it's about time to "officially" join the ML community.

I have been using ML for about 4 years now - started way-back-when with the 550d stuff.

I've done various video and photographic projects over the years - more photography probably, however I'm going back to video with a vengeance based upon the ever progressive 5D RAW video opportunities made available through the wisdom of the ML developers.

Recently I have managed to get everything I ever wanted in terms of kit - 2 x 5D2's (no 5D3's here thankyou very much), a good selection of IS lenses, Steadicam, Dolly and a Jib. And not forgetting a recent nightly build of MLV 

So, there it is. BTW I am a secondary IT teacher by trade and regularly go on rants to my kids about the technology that big multi-nationals don't want you to know about.

Some of the bright kids can even spell Magic Lantern correctly too.

Looking forward to communicating with some of you folks and picking your brains.
