Thanks for the help and the clarification.

Let me clarify and try this again.

I shoot 1080/30P with my Canon 60D for the most part. I do not use RAW at all.

My cards are 16gb Transend SD Class 10's.

I rarely see the white "overload" boxes on the right side of the screen showing I'm close to reaching a data rate limit. My last shoot was 3 hours of interviews with no issues at all. Cards held around 45 minutes or so in 12 minute clips.

So from this can you advise if I should be using the Extreme version cards. That is, is it likely I am suffering a quality loss with this set up?

Thanks!

General Help Q&A / Canon 60D: Do cards affect quality?
December 23, 2014, 07:02:21 PM
Any truth to what I was reading on a Vimeo posting that unless you are using the faster SD cards (i.e. Sandisk Extreme) you are losing video (data rate) quality?

The latest firmware for the 60D is still V1.1.1

My tests do not give a clean HDMI output. The ML data is still in the picture. Frankly, without this data ML becomes worthless so it has to be there for me to see.

My understanding is, only those few Canon cameras that have the dual processors like the 5D can give you a clean, separate HMDI for recording.

The rest of us are limited to in-camera recording.

General Help Q&A / Re: Trouble making more cards
December 04, 2014, 11:20:14 PM
Ah, OK. Don't remember doing this before but I installed eoscard and it worked.

I must have used the camera to do this originally??

At any rate, thanks very much. Sent the developer some $$. Saved time doing this way, I feel.

General Help Q&A / Trouble making more cards
December 04, 2014, 10:49:39 PM
Maybe I'm missing something here. Have not needed any more spare cards until now but for some reason I cannot get them to work.

I have a Canon 60D and I did the install for ML per instructions several months ago. I have two Transcend 16gb cards that work fine.

I had a folder on my PC with the ML folder and seven additional files that I'm sure I used months ago to make the two cards I now use. I have exFat to format the cards with a reader (although I have also done it in the camera). I've done that and copied the ML material to them... compared files and sizes... but they do not work. Using the same Transcend series 10 16gb as before.

I get no instant LED flash when the card is inserted, as I do with the known good cards, and the LED does not blink when powered up indicating it is reading from the cards. No ML is present after power on. Done this a half dozen times and not sure where I'm going wrong.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

General Help Q&A / Re: 720 30P with Canon 60D
December 03, 2014, 10:28:34 PM
Client wants to shoot 30p for upload to the web during the shoot. Checking 1080 30p and the files are much smaller than 720 60p so the smaller file size 30P represents is one factor.

The other is 30p is more or less the standard for the web so I get this request more and more.

BTW: ML would allow me to leave the audio on so I tried doing that but the recording stopped after just a few seconds. Tried several times with same result. Turning FPS off and it was fine again. Not sure what was up with that.

Hey thanks.

Says it disables sound so that will not work. Guess I'm stuck with 60 : (

General Help Q&A / 720 30P with Canon 60D
December 03, 2014, 04:18:08 PM
Installed ML a few months ago. As before I have 720 60P but not 30P.

Has there been any update that will provide for 30P or any kind of workaround to make that happen with this camera?

Thanks!

Thanks. When I get a clue I'll be back.

OK.

Well, both indoor and outdoor tests were done static and moving. Even when static with no movement in the scene I had buffering boxes before deleting the CFG file as Walter suggested.

The only difference between today and Saturday was the heat factor.
Hence my question about ambient temp having some affect.
#13
What about the ambient temp having an affect?

#14
I put the SD card that was crashing almost every time on Saturday back in to the camera today. Still with same Magic.CFG file. It ran fine. Only one time did it stop recording. When pointed outside the buffering boxes on the right side appeared. First bottom box white. Stayed that way. Moving camera inside (where it was darker) the buffering boxes went away. Repeat camera location and it came back.

Today the temp is much lower than Saturday. Nice cool day.

Deleted the Magic.CFG file and redid test.

First recording outside the buffering boxes came on with two whites then it went away after about two seconds. Multiple records outside and the boxes did not re-appear at all. Ran one test for about 5gb no issues.

Conclusions?

Got it!

Will report back tomorrow.

Appreciate the help but you are getting way ahead of me on this.

Do you want me to delete all ML files from the SD card and try shooting without these files?

If so, I can try a card with no ML files on it.

Build date for the camera? How can I tell that? Firmware is V1.1.1 . Camera was a refirb from Canon's web site.

Using H.264 to record at full HD 30P and 24P w/ same result

Not sure what you mean by modules.

Global draw? Not sure how I had it set. Factory default most likely since I have no idea what this is.

Camera is at the house and I'm at work. Sorry I cannot tell you more than this : (

General Help Q&A / 60D stops recording instantly
May 12, 2014, 04:20:27 PM
Playing around with my 60D over the weekend I had the camera abort the recording as soon as it was started several times. Using 16gb Transcend SDHC 10 cards. All cards were freshly formatted and had nothing on them but ML.

One card would not run hardly at all. The other card seemed to work fine but would abort now and then. Usually after the camera had been turned off so it was the first recording. After that it was usually OK.

If the camera records at 21Mbs and these cards are good for 30 there should be some margin there. Have used them with other HD video cameras with no issues.

I should also say I was outside with the camera. Temp was around 70F and sunny. Camera in the shade for the most part but had some sun now and then.

What are you folks using and do you have these aborts.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Thank you for the lead : )

According to what it says my QT files (prior to installing ML) seem to average 48.1 Mbps. That seems quite high.

Mostly nature shots on that card. Nothing with fast motion save for some moving waters shots.

What I do not see is the bit depth listed but I believe this is recording as 4:2:0 is that correct?

#21
First off, can I assume the codec used on my Canon 60D is the same as that used in the Canon Mark 5D series?

If so, according to Wiki the HD bitrate (for the 5D) is 38 megabits per second but I believe this is way higher than the SD card can handle or am I mistaken?

Please enlighten me. Looking for more information on what the specs are for the recording of HD video on my 60D.

Thanks!

Apparently the 4b file limit is due to the FAT32 file format used on memory cards. Just wondering if reformatting them to NTFS would alter the limitation as it does with any basic computer system?
#23
Prior to learning about ML I was informed the HDMI output from the 60D was unusable for recording to a digital recorder like the Atomos. Something about the screen res being off and data showing up
on the screen.

Does the ML update take care of this and is the HDMI output now a clean, data-free, full HD signal?

Thanks

Update: I found a reply on this forum from someone who answered a similar question RE: clean HDMI video out on the 60D and they said "you can get clean HDMI with the latest V1.2.3 Canon firmware...."

My understanding is you need Canon's V1.1.1 in the 60D to run ML so I'm still confused on this.
#24
OK. I will check this out. Thanks.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have ML installed on my Canon 60D and its fantastic.

I have one issue that I hope can be resolved. I like to see the exposure meter at the bottom of the screen so I can get an idea of just where I'm at. I can toggle back to the original screen (sans ML) if need be but I'd rather see it with ML info.

Now, if I half press the shutter it pops up but only for as long as it is pressed. It does not remain at all. A few seconds would be all I need.

Is there a setting for how long it will remain after releasing the shutter. I cannot find one but maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks!
