Share Your Photos / ML in Croatia
September 20, 2014, 02:12:19 PM
Some of my recent shots from trip to Croatia. ML nightly on 7D. Mostly median or mean merged frames in photoshop, one with Dual ISO (100/400) for foreground detail.

Features used:
- Dual ISO,
- Intervalometer,
- ETTR,
- MLU

Enjoy!

Unfortunately I don't have originals to try different processing parameters, but I'll do some testing on different shots, thanks a1ex!

Considering how many bad pixels arise on long exposures, it would be nice to have this parameter kick in automatically while processing. But since people have different preferences (and cameras) it may be best to implement such feature on Barracuda GUI or LR plugin as a user programmable switch.

dmilligan, I always thought that demosaicing algorithms are mostly square-based (eg 2x2). I was surprised to see triangles ;-) As for dual being inappropriate for this shot - agreed, I'm just testing different ML settings to do a usability study in order to know when some features might be helpful and when not. Regular ISO 100 shot would work well too.

Did anyone experience strange artifacts happening on long exposures? I did a 60 second shot at 100/400 and it contains an awful lot of colorful triangles.

See example.

File->Settings

Thanks! I would have never spotted it myself. Perhaps because it's a lonely "File" which is positioned below the splash screen with no indication of being a menu or a button. It might be a user experience issue or just my blindness ;-)

I know that it may be super-stupid, but... How do I access settings? :D

kichetof,

  • Multithreading (ie. Barracuda GUI). For multithreading I don't know how to add it, but you can run multi export.

Barracuda GUI achieves multithreading by running multiple instances of cr2hdr simultaneously, in background. Perhaps, there's a way to do it the same way in your plugin?

  • Delete original (convert and erase). Version 2.1 export to a temp folder and keep original after conversion, I don't want to make this decision but I can add an option

It would be great to have the ability to make it optional in export preset. This way it would be possible to define multiple cr2hdr presets.

Super-useful plugin! Thank you, kichetof.

If I may, I'd like to suggest some additional settings:

  • Multithreading (ie. Barracuda GUI).
  • Delete original (convert and erase).
  • Define command-line parameters (ie. --soft-film=x).
  • Define custom cr2hdr.exe files (ie. 20-bit variant).
  • Define presets (ie. standard, --soft-film=2, --soft-film=4, etc.).
  • Ability to skip confirmation box when using plugin on bunch of different files (jpegs and cr2 together). Just silently skip jpegs.

@szDE
If you are an adobe guy the new LR plugin works really well.

I'll certainly give it a shot!

It rocks hard, and is safe to use.

I even used it on last event I covered, with absurd settings of 100/3200 at f/1.4, developed with --soft-film=4 and I'm more than pleased with effects. Check it out!

I took about 1100 frames, all with dual ISO. Processed them with Barracuda GUI (took whole night to process on Q6600 :P). Zero problem whatsoever.

Magic Lantern together with dual ISO module are the real 2.0 7D firmware update, not the Canon one ;)

When I try to process a picture which is located on the HDD I get an error and the picture is just copied.
But if the picture is located on the SD card the processing works fine.

You have space character in folder name - "Meine Bilder". Change it with underscore "Meine_Bilder" and the problem will go away.

I've installed it as pointed out here.

It works.

Also, I'd like to say few things:

  • It's magic indeed
  • Dual ISO is magic x2
  • ML crew should be funded by Canon, even unofficially
  • I'm more excited than I was when I purchased 7D

Hello,

I've been tracking the development of ML and TL for some time now, but I'm not sure if I've figured out one major thing, so please correct me if I'm wrong:

If I'm willing to use the bleeding-edge development versions of ML or TL for 7D (including dual-iso module), I need "booton" trick in order for 7D to run "autoexec.bin" instead of xxx.fir files?
I'm asking because I'd like to stay on the safe side and flash xxx.fir files only when I need ML (so far I rarely use ML features, and I don't need it to boot automatically) and stay away from setting bootflag on my camera. However, latest nightly versions downloaded from ML website don't have xxx.fir files, and TL nightlies result in "Old API" when trying to run modules.

Any tips? Or should I just try flashing a fir file with autoboot enabled?
