Feature Requests / Re: Quick AF while recording

Unfortunately yes. Also it is only possible to use the focus box area whereas quick AF you can choose all focus points or middle point.

Feature Requests / Quick AF while recording
May 18, 2014, 12:57:48 PM
Wondering if it's possible to continue recording through quick AF. As in you will have a black section of video as the mirror blocks the sensor but for me at least it would save a lot of time having to stop recording each time.

Thanks

I was having some trouble getting this working coming from the older 1.2.3 ML. I format/uninstalled ML then loaded 1.2.3ML .fir but camera wouldn't recognise it. After going to 1.2.3 and back with no luck, finally i renamed from 5D3_123.fir to 5D300123.FIR and the camera recognises the new .fir and loads as it should. I'm 99% sure I didn't need to do all that other stuff, so for anyone already running 1.2.3 ML the update process SHOULD be as follows:

-format>remove ML
-wipe card
-load latest ml onto card and rename 5D3_123.fir to 5D300123.FIR
-firmware update
-wait for bootflag removal if you like

Apart from that all working well. Also I did not experience any camera boot issues that nigel did coming from 1.1.3.

Alex, sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman.  :)

As far as I know the camera will shut down live view after 29.59 regardless of recording h.264 or just idle (or recording raw). I believe there is a workaround using sticky shutter to keep live view on for longer. Maybe give that a go

Getting clean hdmi recording and raw recording so far  :D Going to do some test with both at once   :-\

The raw recording appears to have no effect on hdmi feed. I've yet to extract the raw to check it looks ok though. If you were referring to a cropped raw using 5x zoom then no, hdmi receives 5x zoom as well.

Just what Ive been waiting for...   Imagine raw to card and 1080 25p to Ninja on 1.2.3 :o

That's exactly what I'm already doing!  ;)

ML working alongside hdmi out. Interesting behavior though. With mirroring off (hdmi out only, no liveview), pressing info can bring up a cropped frame with ml overlays ect. But with mirroring on (hdmi out+liveview) it is not possible to get ml overlays on either screen (ml menu asks you to press info to remove canon overlays).

Raw recording works in both modes. With mirroring off, raw recording has no effect on hdmi output!

Picking up my Ninja 2 tomorrow. This couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks so much to everyone involved. Bunch of legends! :D

Feature Requests / Re: Continuous or seamless audio

if it were possible to record h264 audio and separate wav then synching could be done with digital slate beep one one channel. Most people only record mono with shotgun mic into both channels.

Feature Requests / Continuous or seamless audio
October 22, 2013, 01:55:22 PM
My apologies if this has already been suggested, my search came up empty.

I noticed that with raw recording we are able to get separate .wav files, which I assume are continuous? My question is, is it possible to somehow record a continuous .wav file in the background while shooting .h264? If not, is it possible to start a recording when the camera reaches 29:59 or 4gb then end it when you hit record again? Essentially so we can have the option for continuous audio for events ect.

I know for continuous recording bandwidth would be a possible issue but could we disable .h264 sound to free some up?

It would be impossible to use the speedbooster because of flange distance. Speedboosters can only work with mirrorless systems. Unless you are happy shooting macro only.

General Chat / Re: 70D: Rumors and speculation.
July 02, 2013, 10:42:53 AM
Had an interesting chat with the Canon rep about 70d that was just announced. If you haven't heard, it has 2 different pixel arrays, so while it shoots 20.2mp it actually has 40+mp in the sensor. My rep was very interested to see if ML would be able to hack the 70d to allow full use of the 40+mp. The camera uses digic 5+ so it is possible in theory I suppose.

Also interesting that he brought up magic lantern before I even mentioned it to him, and he seemed genuinely interested in it's development.

Thanks Alex, I might do some experimenting then on the processing and see how it looks  :D

Raw Video / Idea for speed increase
June 20, 2013, 09:02:58 AM
Hey all not sure if this has been brought up before, I didn't even now what to search for to see if it was. Basically I had an idea to try to squeeze a little more resolution / speed out of the slower cameras. Is it possible to alternate frames between low and high resolution? So for example frame 1 would be 1920 and frame 2 would be 720 and so on, kinda like how GOP works I suppose except using resolution changes. Then in post we would upscale every other frame to match.

Just throwing it out there. If this is not at all possible please remain calm and continue coding  :D

Just thinking, I might be way off, but is it possible to record in a squashed/anamorphic aspect ratio to avoid stretching and induce shrinking instead? So instead of recording 16:9 we record 9:16 ( or whatever delivers best results ).

Anyone else notice the weird square noise pattern on the dngs? Here is the same frame with max sharpen in AE to highlight it. Second frame has blur + noise before the sharpen. turning off sharpening in ACR doesn't seem to help.

I've noticed a lot of people getting differing results with the komputerbay cards. Might this have something to do with the fact that they were exposed as actually being Lexar cards that failed quality control?

How easy is it to change the record start button? At the moment with d.o.f. sticky on the record button doesn't work, for me at least.

50D battery is very close to 6D/5D definitely better than 600D

Hi all,

Fantastic work so far, big thanks to all involved. I own a 550D and my GF owns a 50D. I've been doing some testing on both and so far results and stability have been good even using very early builds. I am going to buy a faster CF card to test since she only has 300x CF cards (and I have 95m/s sony card to test on my 550). I work at a camera shop and I have access to cheap prices on Promaster 1000x 150 MB/s cards (I'm in Australia) so I'm lucky there.

I'll hopefully have time this week to get out and shoot some test shots that aren't just of the inside of my house. Any requests for specific shots or tests?

Also +1 for donating to get 1% a 50D.

I was just thinking the same as you Julian (at the same time lol) my thought was is there anyone that lives close to one of the devs that wouldn't mind lending their body for a while? That is, if it's ok with them :)
