Hi everyone! Wow awesome thread. Read basically the entire 26 pages. Lots of great info. Thanks Andy600 for so much technical and practical advice. I am very close to making a purchase of cinelog, but had a few questions:

1. You keep mentioning setting correct white balance while shooting. Just wondering what this means and what settings I should select in camera and then in Resolve to achieve proper WB?

2. I have an x rite color checker chart and Kodak 18% grey card and would like to know the best practices when filming a scene?. I have been filming the chart for every single shot, is this necessary? Also, it appears that the camera calibration panel with the chart throws the purpose of your Luts off, no?  Just trying to understand how or if a color checker and grey card should be used in a production to post (resolve) workflow, using cinelog.

3. I've read and understand all of the concepts / pros you've outlined, regarding a raw to log intermediate workflow. But in a perfect world, where CPU / GPU and HDD capacity / speed are non issues, wouldn't archiving and grading the raw files / dngs be ideal? IF I don't need to grade and create intermediates of every shot and rather just spit out super rough proxies, edit (I'm the editor) and then only grade my edited timeline, then wouldn't I be saving time, by not setting white balance and exposure for every shot?  Does that make sense? If I screwed up white balance / exposure somehow, it's not a necessarily simple fix, right? Also, what if some years down the road, new technology or techniques inevitably arrive, I'd probably be better with a digital negative, then log "print"' for archive, no?

Anyway thanks for all of your amazing thoughts and helping us all.

I really enjoyed this. You did a really good job. In what area was this shot? The scenery is beautiful.

Thank you!  It was filmed primarily in and around Ojai, CA.  I say it's the winter light, mixed with some of the best sunsets I've seen in the valley.  Just good timing and a little magic haha.

I loved it, but you have a dead pixel at minute 18
I saw this too and thought that how did you manage to remove all dead pixels in the scene?! it's a huge work!
Anyway nice done! Congratulations! ^_^

Thank you, but I'm really not seeing this dead pixel at minute 18.  I've checked the masters and it's not there, unless I'm missing it.  There are, as mentioned above, visible dead/hot pixels in the night scenes.

Some really beautiful shots. Where is this?  I don't think I've ever been to a place, other than the zoo, with so many different large animals.  Were any of your files corrupt?  Also, any strange behaviors with the camera, while working with RAW video?  Thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure I see any dead pixels in this scene and I'm watching uncompressed, here.  Might be a youtube and/or compression artifact.  I am, however, aware of a few dead pixels in other scenes (namely, the night scenes).  It seems that when you push the camera over around 640 or 1250 ISO they jump out.  The scene you are referring to was shot at 320 or less, because of available light.

Any tips/tricks how to remove dead pixels in post, etc.?

Another thing I've noticed, and was wondering if it affected the MKIII, was on certain high ISOs blown highlights get a horrible pink cast.  I had to manually correct for this in certain shots, which was an absolute pain.  I did discover, through some testing, that at 2500 ISO and 5000 ISO it goes away.  Which is odd.  It doesn't seem to crop up at ISOs under 640.  I'll have to do more testing, though.

Anybody else experience this problem?

Cool concept, nice work.  Some great shots in there!

Thanks Flame2bits!  I had him made, fresh from the cloner, before production.  Saved me a million.

Awesome look, grade and feel nahlanee!  Very cinematic and good variety in the shots.  I'm sure your original video file looks so much better, before Vimeo compressed the hell out of it.  Can't go wrong with Italian countryside, though :)

How did you like shooting with the MKIII in RAW?  Did you get any dropped frames, corrupted files, strange artifacts, etc.  Love for you to check out my short, http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10245.0, if you get a chance.

Thanks and great work!

Nice work zeemonkeeman!  Some cool shots and post fx.  I especially like the 70s film vibe on the narrative portion of the video.  Did you use film convert in AE?

I've been using the 5D MKII and have found the camera to respond quite well with ML RAW.  Did you notice any odd or inconsistent behavior (dropped frames, corrupt files, strange artifacts, lockups, etc.) while filming with the MK III?  The fact that there don't seem to be any line skipping aspects and you can shoot full 1080p, seem to make it a no brainer.

Anyway, congrats on the video and keep up the good work.  If you have a minute, you can view one of my short films on this site: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10245.0

Thank you acid2006!  Your comment made my day.  There will definitely be more stuff in the future.

Hey everyone!

First off, thanks Magic Lantern Team for making the 5DMKII a brand new camera for me.  When I got wind of the RAW module I had to see what it was all about.  Needless to say, it has blown my mind.  Aside from the file sizes and more complex workflow, there really is no reason to not shoot with ML RAW.  It looks amazing and your FW is really quite stable.  THANK YOU!

Some info: I shot this short entirely on my 5DMK II with ML RAW (using Leica R primes and Lexar 1000x CF cards).  It was edited in Premiere CC and graded in Resolve 10 on a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013).  WARNING: the first 5 minutes are intentionally silent, but leave your speakers on... you'll see.

Love to see what people think!

Raw Video / Re: 5D Mark II RAW Crop Mode FPS

Thanks for the link.  I totally overlooked that sticky, my bad.

Maybe this was answered somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

When I enable 'FPS override' with 'exact FPS' optimization (to utilize crop mode at 23.976 FPS), my shutter speed changes from 1/48 to 1/33.7 (256 deg). If I adjust my shutter speed to attain 1/48 (180 deg), my canon shutter speed and the readout in the ml overlay, reads 1/80.  What is the correct shutter speed, the one listed in the ML menu or the one on the canon top LCD / ML shutter speed overlay?  I want to use both crop and normal raw modes and have a 180 degree shutter. Sorry if this question has already been answered.  Appreciate any and all help. Thank you!

Raw Video / 5D Mark II RAW Crop Mode FPS
November 12, 2013, 06:24:11 PM
Hi Everyone!

This is my first post here.  Just recently started using ML, why did I wait so long haha?  I want to thank everyone at ML who worked on the FW.  It has been such an amazing thing to discover and use!

Anyway, my question is about the crop mode in RAW.  I've noticed that when I zoom in to enable the crop mode, my FPS goes from 23.976 to 29.97.  I've also confirmed that the files, viewed in RAWMagic, are listed as 29.97.  Is there a way to switch frame rates?

For reference:

- I'm using the November 7th nightly build
- 32GB Lexar 1000x cards
- Resolution is 1920x818 (2.35) in crop
- Can't seem to get a steady continuous recording (is this a limitation of my card or the camera?)

I'm just hoping there's a way to switch 24p, because this may enable a continuous recording, with my setup.  I'd rather not lower the resolution, if I don't have to.  Thanks for any help!
