General Help Q&A / Re: Time Limitations Removed 5Dm3?
« on: June 15, 2015, 11:36:44 PM »
Awesome! Thank you. That makes me feel a little better. I was afraid I'd have to buy a 256GB card for 550 bucks and pray the ceremony wasn't too long to fit on it because of the size of RAW. If I can stay h.264 then I have nothing to worry about.

Thank you. So making sure I understand... If I DONT shoot RAW, i will lose a couple of frames at the 30 minute mark, but it will continue to roll, right? It would be for weddings so I would have other angles to cover any dropped frames.

I heard from someone that the 30 minute record limitation was removed from the 5D Mark 3 through ML? I'm having a hard time finding the info - is this true?

Thanks!

I'm keeping the 5DM3 and my wife has a 6D which is at my disposal as well - so I have two solid DSLR backups. It's just after seeing the same cinematographer who shot my short this year shoot another short on the Red with Zeiss glass... there was no comparison. That's why I'm wanting one...  Here's what I have so far...

Canon 5DM3
Canon 6D
Canon - 24-70mm f/2.8 L (I)
Canon 50mm f/1.4

Will be adding the Atomos Shogun for 10bit CDNG backups and realtime playback on set.

I make a short film yearly and eventually hope to move towards a feature, once I can get a budget that would support missing work. I want to have the hollywood standard (that being why I'm wanting to get the RED). Once I get the RED I'll hopefully be able to add in Canon Cine Primes - with taxes and bonus checks. I'll graduate as a nurse practitioner in two years - killer paycheck will equal killer toys :) I would like to use them on my own projects and recover expenses through rental - again, me being on set will be a rental requirement.

General Chat / Need help - If you had the money, would you...

Ok everyone... I'm coming into a good chunk of cash in the next few months. So I'm faced with a dilemma... by next summer I'll be sitting on roughly 20k. I currently own a 5DM3 which I use ML on for that uber sexy RAW footage. Here's the dilemma.
If you had this money would you:
A) Invest in a RED Scarlet-X setup with Canon adapter and have extra cash for hard drives, batteries, etc.
B) Invest in a RED Scarlet Dragon with Canon adapter and have no cash for spare hard drives, batteries, etc. You'd pick these up as you can or rent them if needed.
C) Stay away from RED, Buy Canon Lenses and the Atomos Shogun (I get .edu discount so it's only $1,400).

I could rent the RED out and recover most if not all of my cost. I would insure it and accompany it to every set that it goes to. I'm not in LA so the market isn't flooded with REDs. With the Canon - not much way to make money back from it.

Thoughts?

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: The CinemaDNG Discussion (raw2cdng)
« on: June 23, 2014, 02:48:41 AM »
I just wanted to let you know that I used 1.5 Beta 6 and did not have any issues on my Windows 8.1, GeForce GTX 780, and pulling the footage into Premiere CC with audio synced. No pink highlights or green frames. Even when viewing the DNGs in Explorer, the images were scaled correctly and the colors were represented properly. Great work building this from the bottom up! Excited to see more to come and what Adobe does with the rumors of more DNG support.

Chad - ditto here. I use 1.5.0 beta 6 with Adobe Premiere CC 2014 on Windows 8.1, GeForce GTX 670M, and have no issues.

Create clean cDNG´s from MLV would be so great! Cant wait!

Raw2CDNG 1.5.0 beta 6 is what I use and it does break MLV files apart into wav and CDNG..

I didn't realize there are 1Tb SSD drives available already. Pretty cool actually, do you have a link you can post to the one you're looking at?

Here's the 1TB SSD from Seagate that I plan on adding. May pick up two and replace my 1TB HDD... Would that make a big difference?

Link to SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/dp/B00E3W16OU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403483168&sr=8-1&keywords=1tb+ssd

What Raw2Cdng Converter are you using? or is it RawMagic ?
From my test the only 16bit Cdng the works is the raw2cdng v1.4.9 from chmee

I'm importing and using the CDNGs just fine (minus the non realtime playback issue b/c of not having a SSD) using raw2cdng 1.5.0 beta 6 on Adobe Premiere CC 2014. Hopefully speed issues will be resolved when I pick up a couple of SSDs.

Would it be better to buy one 1TB SSD drive or 2 500Gb SSD's? Looks like a pair of 500Gb's would run $500 and one 1Tb would run about $400.

Since I'm still yet to successfully pull off a Davinci --> Avid --> Davinci workflow, I'll probably stick with the Adobe route. I can import straight into Premiere, cut my film, shoot it to Speedgrade to color, then back to Premiere.. right? I'm also waiting to see what Davinci's NLE looks like too... so I will probably be sticking with Native CDNG just because I'm a dummy when it comes to all of the proxy/roundtrip stuff....

Yes - I'm on as ASUS ROG laptop. Has beast specs... but the HDD is a 7200RPM 1Tb. I have a second bay for an SSD drive, but dont have one in there. So if I keep the 1TB for storage space and put in a 480Gb Sata 3 SSD should that cover it? I think I'm set on GPU, RAM, and CPU.  What's the best Raid config? Should I store all media on the SSD? Should apps and OS go on the SSD too for load speed? Sorry for all of the q's - haven't done this before.

Thanks!

Hey everyone - finally got a chance to play with CC 14. I imported the CDNG into premiere and everything looks great, but when I go to play back it's not realtime.. it gets kind of choppy. I have 24Gb DDR3 PC1600, use the CUDI setting to pull from my GeForce GTX670M card, and have an i7 processor... I thought that should be more than enough for playback. I'm just playing with test shots now, but this will be a major issue once I go to cut together my next short. Any thoughts or tips to get realtime?

My update better roll out tomorrow...

all I can say is this makes me happy.

General Chat / How to get this shot?
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:44:24 AM »
For my next short - I'm needing something like this..

Static shot of a skyline - maybe out of a window. Everything is normal... then a bright flash in the sky - maybe a hue change temporarily during the flash (think LOST when the swan station implodes) - then back to normal..  a second later a Jet goes by the window obviously crashing or maybe crashes into the window...

This is probably way over my head but would really add a punch if I could throw it in during the opening sequence.

18
Sooo.. is this a dead program or are any updates coming?

19
I sure hope so... because... well.. today's the 18th :)

I'm stoked... hopefully this will eliminate the need for all of the roundtripping to premiere or avid... I can import my DNGs, edit, grade, export... right? no quality loss or anything?

20
Hey - about your workflow - could you give a little more detail? What did you use to convert the files? Did you shoot in MLV or RAW? I'm still trying to figure out how to roundtrip from grading in AE to editing in Premiere then back to AE for secondary grades on the DNG files so that I don't lose any quality... any tips?

Raw Video / Re: REC COMMAND via the HDMI trigger - Atomos
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:49:47 AM »
This is awesome! I'm putting the purchase of the Atomos Ninja Blade on hold for a few until I see what develops here... If we could get realtime playback with audio by shooting the H264 file to the SD slot then COUNT ME IN!!! Although, the blade still has the benefit of recording 10bit footage (not as good as ML's 14bit, but better than the H264's 8bit) as a backup in case of card or file corruption through ML or card issues....   Keep up the good work! Ya'll rock!

22
I'm curious for other feedback too... been considering getting the Osiris LUTS..
Also - anyone have a solid workflow for Davinci to Premiere or Davinci to Avid where I can link the files and truly work off of the DNG files instead of compressed mess?

Hardware and Accessories / Atomos Ninja 2 to SmallHD
« on: June 11, 2014, 05:06:33 AM »
Anyone try this? Thinking of picking up an Atomos Ninja 2 for playback purposes and running to a SmallHD AC7 for larger viewing while filming. Anyone try this? Thoughts?
