ok slightly off topic to this ML version but is related  (and not answered on the 1st post)

in the UK we use PAL aka 1080p/720p 25fps
in the US they use NTSC 30fps
(forget 29.97 and 24 etc i'm talking 70D here)

The 70D will not go lower than 1/30 in movie so it's obviously designed for NTSC with a pull down arrangement added for PAL

My question: would we in PAL regions not be better to shoot in NTSC 30fps with 1/30th sec shutter and then pulldown in AE/Premier etc?
I ask as we can get RAW 720p 25 or 30 within SD bandwidth
Even further would be, if shooting for the web why not just stay in a 30fps / 1/30th workflow all the way? (with i7s and SSDs the days of cutting every unneeded frame and Hz aren't worth it any more plus HD means PictureAlwaysLousy and NeverTheSameColour is really all it means now)

anyone done much testing?I ask as is there any point in keeping any PAL/25fps ML settings in a camera that won't shoot at 1/25 or 1/50 etc anyway?

the original cameras that worked with the 4b version appear to be version "A"

all seems to function fine so far.

sorry: i don't remember it happening before so i don't remember testing it and i've deleted the test content so can't check now

AF is disabled after the first go during record and won't come back when recording has stopped but,
if you let it go into power save and press start to reactivate you get AF and shutter speed/aperture control back again in liveview (with other weird and strange numbers in ML shutter speed like "..N 12"..5s)
if you then record you only get 1 go at AF again
manually moving to MF makes no difference

re audio: whenever is good for you

i've also noticed in this version that the menu doesn't flicker so much or disappear so quickly, if you keep pressing an arrow it stays most of the time, seems the RAW menu is the least stable and photo mode is the most.

1. all versions so far have installed on my 70D without issue
2. brilliant work nikfreak and friends
3. wish people would stop the inane chatter on this thread (18 pages of crap so far)  (eg. walter shulz and co., you buy a fast card so when transferring video to your computer it doesn't take 3 hours but hey you know everything it seems, keep this thread to ML 70D and chat somewhere else please)

Testing RAW 1280x720 , default settings, manual exposure, AF with 50mm f1.8
Both RAW and MLV record, MLV the first time takes a while for the 281Mb file to write and also displays that a static image only uses about 14Mb/s(normally hovers around 38.3)(landscape HD RAW video might be doable? if these are correct values).

Both have the following bug:
Whilst recording press AF-ON to auto-focus, snaps into focus, from this point onwards autofocus will no longer work and ML shutter speed in ML shows: N/A, -214748364
You now also cannot change the shutter speed or aperture on the normal display until you restart the camera(flick to photo and back again) - the liveview exposure simulation still works but lags.

Hope this helps.

Any chance you could enable the Audio menu so we can stop the screen going off when you plug in headphones in the next version?

thanks nik

can I emphasise to any of the devs that all we really need ML for on the 70D at the moment is to allow the use of headphones
I understand how much work a full port is but that's all we need, wants and dreams can wait(raw vid etc can wait till dev time is an option)

I'd be happy to pay £10 to be able to monitor audio (i'm sure there are at least 100 70d owners who need just this feature, £1000 for a few days work must be tempting, there could be 1000 owners....)

autofocus servo af makes a click which any on camera mic picks up (i'm using the rode stereomic pro with dead kitten)

Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM - approx 207Hz -48dB with a 6.3Hz width will remove most of the sound(enough to not be as distracting)

So here's a new one, what frequency is your lens during ServoAF?? :D

Please list below;

Canon 70-200 F2.8 L USM - approx. 8200Hz -48dB with a 30Hz width will remove the click

even if we'll never write 14bit 1080p would there be any possibility of intercepting the data between the sensor and the all-i compressor? if so then could plugins or presets be set to run? then let the camera down sample to 8 bit using the custom parameters and write as normal

btw canon just told me that teh reason the screen switches off when you plugin the usb audio cable is because users want longer battery life and disabling the screen saves power....yeh it also prevents headphone monitoring...my response was i'd happily carry another battery but a compromise would be an on/off in frmware

considering the d7100 has a dedicated socket the least they could do is give us the option of buying a £3 phono to 3.5mm socket adaptor and getting decent audio.

the alternative is to carry a 7" hdmi screen and losing the touch functions....and a rig to hold it

a samsung camera running android with an EF fitting will change all of this old school crap.

so clean hdmi output would be the best compromise

apple gets away with it and the zombies love it so all companies are trying it to certain degrees, cripple and over charge then change formats and connectors slightly to force repurchase. used to be just sony...

i do wonder why canon don't seem to bother with market research though - imagine the camera range if they even just bothered to read this forum

General Help Q&A / Re: 70D
September 23, 2013, 12:50:21 AM
1.1.1 has some pretty obvious bugs so hopefully won't be too long

start writing to canon people

things like;
in quick mode using the shutter button, the image isn't saved, you must use touch shutter
after the audio level setting times out, servo af is switched back on
af microadjust only works in quick mode and +/-20 is only worth a few cm
lack of menu options for the my menu screen, 5 isn't enough if there's only 1 C setting
hdr only works on jpgs, why can't it convert raws to jpg then hdr so you get decent originals
while recording a movie, if you take a still and then another before the 1st has saved, the video will stop recording
manual audio setting screen should never time out

as all you need is a phono to 3.5mm convertor to plug in headphones, no amp needed, audio monitoring should be enabled
plugging in the usb audio cable should not disable the screen

PAL video shot at 25fps can't go lower that 1/30th sec shutter

osx lion 10.7.5 won't take the apple update to use the 70d raw in prievew etc - canon should speak to apple as ML has major samba issues - adobe camera raw to the rescue

the top screen back light time out is too quick, it should toggle with the switch

minor but annoying things....otherwise brilliant camera

Raw Video / Re: Anyone try Raw with the 70D Yet??

i'd contribute towards a 70D but not for anything else.

if the devs are ok with this could someone setup a crowd fund?

ok as it is 2013 and there are sites to help fund projects collectively

why don't  us 70d owners all donate an amount towards buying the magic lantern guys one

crowd fund or something similar?

ML guys: sound ok by you?

General Help Q&A / simple idea, great results
September 18, 2013, 10:32:40 PM
you guys club together and buy cameras at trade prices, install and test ML and then sell them, i'd pay retail + % to get a ML certified outfit.

If the 70D is anything like the 60D the functions you'll unlock will make this the best budget camera on the market.

with the usb/audio lead a phono to 3.5mm drives headphones without a problem
if you can stop the screen switching off headphone monitoring will be simple
if you can stop the video cancelling when you take multiple shots during recording
if you can enable liveview quick mode shooting with the shutter release(it doesn't save just now so you must use the touch screen)
720 RAW would be amazing but all-i is easily editable and usable
if you could make microadjust work in all liveview modes i'd have your babies
exposure highlights whilst recording would be nice
test pattern would be cool
if you could stop the Q menu timing out when setting audio levels and then switching servo af back on automatically every time

Mr Canon, is that really so difficult when we know from the 60D that it's all possible via proper firmware coding????

btw microadjustment is only active when you use quick shot in liveview ie completely useless.

I so hope the ML guys can sort the shitty canon firmware and give the features a camera of this cost should have as standard.

all-i is 11.2Mb/s and you can take approx. 1 raw shot per second whilst recording so it'll do at least 35Mb/s - i suspect canon cheaped out with the sd card chip again....no chance of 1080 RAW but 720 should be ok

If you want me to dump any code just let me know
