Raw Video / Re: Time to Render 720p RAW dmg in AE
February 15, 2017, 03:54:23 PM
Try Davinci Resolve. AE sucks wit raw.
Resolve use GPU power.
#3
EDIT:

I only got problmes when i Record in "RAW-L" or "RAW-M".
If take pictures in full raw mode i can edit everything i want in resolve.
Color temperatures, etc.

so.. if you shoot raw photos. make sure its "full raw"... and not M, L, S settings.

Hello,

i try to make some timelapse videos. suing the intervalometer.
Now i got 1000 CR2 files. Try to open it in "Davinci Resolve 12.5". (Win7, PC)
works. BUT.. i cannot change raw settings like color temperature,
shadows, gain, etc. i can change those numbers.. but the image
doesn't change. (its like a jpg image.. but not raw. i can change kurves, but not the raw data))

than i tried to convert the CR2 files into DNG using the "adobe DNG Converter".
But Resolve did not recognize those DNG files. "file not found" (no image)

I don't have Lightroom and i don't want to use Adobe Tools.

Post-processing Workflow / Re: FPS override problem
November 06, 2016, 06:32:15 PM
I just want to let you know that a shoot again.
And i got no problems this time.

same settings:
- Desired FPS 25 (from 30)
- Otimized for: Exact FPS

and this time i don't have to remap the time to 24.9.
I could sync it with h264 footage and sound. both 25 fps.

Post-processing Workflow / FPS override problem
October 29, 2016, 04:18:20 PM
Hi,

I shoot some video with a two camera setup. One Camera (Canon60D) recording h264 files in 25fps (no ML)
and the 50D with magic Lantern recording raw at 25 fps using "FPS Override".

Settings:
- Desired FPS 25 (from 30)
- Otimized for: Exact FPS

Later in Resolve i noticed that i cannot sync the clips. I have to change the Clip speed of the raw footage to 24.900.
But when i scroll threw the footage (split screen h264 on the left, raw on the right) i noticed that sometime i have to change the speed to 24.890 or 24.910
It was impossible to match those clips. 24.900 was almost in sync.

Any solutions?

Little Update. Did not buy anything yet.
(And i think i will buy a black magic micro cinema camera + speedboster, monitor, etc.)
but still want a shoulder rig solution. And this is what i found today... which looks pretty good:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00OATJTEA
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00N9WE70A

i think this is a good starting point... to end up with something like this:

I got one of these and they works perfect.
SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash 64GB  (160MB/s)

Max resolution on a 50D is 1568 x 882 (16:9)
and the camera (ML Menu) say it need 57MB/sec at 25 fps.

In the link they guy wrote:
"The 128gb 1050x works great for me. I can easily get continuous 1:1 no crop or 1920*800"

but i don't think 1920 pixel is possible on a 50D.
Am i wrong?
120 MB/s maybe is enough. But i would spend a bit more and buy 160 MB.
So you are safe. And i think a faster card also react faster. If you hit record and stop.
Its good when the card ist faster than what you needed.
With 64 GB, recording 1568 x 882 you can record around 20 minutes in raw,
and scale it up to 1920 x 1080.

Thanks for the link. This is a good start.
it will be a problem with follow focus, cables, etc.
But i don´t want to have a camera infront of me, and weights behind me.
And i do get tired. So i decided that i want the camera on my shoulder,
monitors infront of me.. and maybe some externsion for follow focus.
..
but i want to shoot pretty mkuch dogma style.
I just want to hit record button. And thats it.
Maybe pull the focus a little bit.

At the moment i am busy editing another project, and i move
from one apartment to another. i am not in a hury. So it will take
some time, (2, 3 month) till i build up this setup. But i can take some pictures
when its finished. sure. Because i see so many BAD rigs on youtube... and i am
thinking: ok, this is NOT how i want it. And it doesn´t matter if its expensive or
cheap. Most of the time ist just to front heavy. or the handles are to high.
thanks again for all the tipps!

EDIT:
just found this one. You cannot buy it. But it looks pretty cool:

Thanks for the link!
Zacuto is a bit expensive, but i like the idea. Thats pretty much what i want.

I just want to buy "standard" stuff so i can build
things up and not stucked with one brand. (It have not to be supr cheap. i want
to spend some money. but not zacuto)

I just want a "shoulder pad" and some rods for the start.
Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Gini-Rigs-JULIO01-Julio-Rig/dp/B00D0LRRMU/ref=sr_1_44?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1474194501&sr=1-44&keywords=Gini+Rigs

And i also like this idea.. to attach a grip to some "Friction Arm".
https://youtu.be/SEMGSILaDP8?t=1m36s

I want to buy everything seperatly.
- Shoulder Pad
- Rods
- Base for Camera (to place on the rods)
- than grips i can "freely" attach to the rods... maybe with a 'friction arm'.
- second 'fricition arm' for a field monitor / or viewfinder

I want to find a brand where i can build the system i want to, and don't
habe to stick to their "handles" if i don't want to.

Adn with the field monitor" I found some pretty good threads here.

Hi,

i searched the forum but did not found ONE good Shoulder Rig solution.
If you take a look at the "Black Ursa Mini" the whole camera is placed on the shoulder.
I want to build something similar for the Canon 7D, 5D mark II, etc.

A RIG where i don't have to counterweight the camera.
I want to place the Canon Camera directly in the middle of my shoulder. Than i want two handles in front
of me. And a monitor or viewfinder infront of my face. But the Canon Camera should be
exactly on my shoulder.

Reasons: I want to keep the RIG as leightweight as possible.
Camera + Rods, handles and a monitor. balanced with no extra weight.

Should i buy a RIG like this one:
https://www.amazon.de/Kamerar-K1101-Schulterstativ-individuell-verstellbar/dp/B009NT00M2/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1465238781&sr=8-15&keywords=Schulterstativ

and change the rods?
Is it possible to get a monitor, or field monitor infront of my eyes... if the camera is directly placed on my shoulder?
what fieldmonitor is the best. (small one) to have directly infront of you? (leightweight, small, but sharp) or should i go with a viewfinder?
And do i get all the Info like "Peaking" from the ML-Menu as output on my fieldmonitor / viewfinder?

Found it (1minute after i posted the question here. Sorry):
"Interactive mode" .. and than i can draw a rectangle and delete tracking points.

Hello,

I want to stabilize some footage in Resolve. I got a face/person in the foreground.
And a little bit of camerashake in the backround. If i try to stabilize the the footage Resolve
tracks the movement of the face. But this is not what i want. So i tried to crop the image
or using power windows. and "select" only the backround. and try to stabilize again.
But Resolve allways tracks the whole footage. Not area i want.

I want resolve to focus on the backround. And stabilize the backround.
Not the face in the middle of the frame.
Any ideas?

Maybe highlight recovery is better in ACR. (i don't know. i don't think its better. Its a bit different.)
But if you are doing all the work in Lightroom, than export tiff.
And work with tiffs in resolve...

you don't get the benefit of raw. raw is not only higlight recovery or black level.
if you want to desaturate one spezific color, or using color wheels its so much
better with dng files in Resolve, than with tiffs. (just sayin)
#15
I don't think ACR technic is better. It "seems" better with 25% sharpening. But sometimes thats to much.
You should compare non-sharpening dng files in ACR and DR. And i don't think ACR is better.
Of course you can us "flat picture" style to have alot of information but its not the same like having real RAW Data
in DR. Or real raw in ACR to work with.

my current worflow is:
convert to DNG Files. do everything in Resolve. And thats it.
I cannot undertsand people who are switching to Premiere for editing?
Davinci Resolve is fast. And Version 12.5 is great.
Even if you lose some details. (when you say ACR is better)
grade files in AVC than RV. Do tests. and take a closer look to the final video. and check
what looks/feels better.

working RAW in After Effects or Premiere is pain. If you convert to tiff. you can stay in premiere/AE.
If you want to work with RAW, do it in DR. imho. (not with tiffs)
#16
interesting. would be nice to have a tutorial for upscaling to 4k in Resolve, too.
i mean... i just can set it up to 4K and stretch the image to it. (have to do some test, too)
#17
Have a look here:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0

The 60D Camera can only write at 21mb/sec.
If you card has 80mb/sec.. it doesn't matter.
21mb is maximum because of the Canon 60D Camera.

You can only shoot 20 seconds in 720p (i think, with the 60D)
better option is to buy a Canon 50D oder 7D
or go with Canon 5D amrk 2 or 3.

Not true. If you know what your GPU is doing, and your system, and your media Players, and your browser.. the colors looks all the same. I got same results in VLC, Media Player Classic and Quicktime. Also the same colors in Firefox, Chrome, IE. And no difference between youtube and vimeo.

You will definitly get more dynamic range using DNG files. Not only more dynamic range.
with DNG you are able to shift color temperature and tint in Davinci Resolve (or AE). And also
more control over highlights and shadows.
My workflow:

1. MLRViewer to DNG
2. Open files in Resolve 12.5.
3. Using Rec709 for "contrasty" image... and the Scopes to set the color temperature and tint right.
4. After that switching to "BMC Film" which gives me a "flat look".
5. Adding contrast, stauration and dive into color wheels for grading. (Allways with vectorscopes / waveforms on)
6. After basic color grading... maybe add some luts + grain
7. Export (tiff sequenze for Premiere.. if you still need premiere)

Here is a very good Tutorial about Davinci Resolve:

Davinci Resolve + BMPCC grade + swearing
https://vimeo.com/153458368

There i found this "trick" to setting up the color temperature in "Rec709" and after that switch to "BMC Film".
Mov vs. dng. Simple do tests. Film something and than convert it in mov and dng. And grade your footage
as mov and grade dng files. than you will see the difference. and if you have to use "offline" files... get/inverst in a
faster PC. i7, 8 GB ram, 250 GB SSD + 2TB HD. Graphic Card (4GB Ram)

Sorry for switching into german. I was tired at this point.
I updated to Resolve 12.5 (stable version) and now found youtube / vimeo buttons
render settings.
And it works. No color shifting. No crushed colors. I can render h264 Quicktime
file straight out of resolve and it looks perfect.

Thanks. Even the 12.3 version is buggy. If i got my nodes open. than switch between Fullscreen and back... the nodes are closed. (grrr. not cool when you sometimes only work on  one monitor) I don`t want t to switch to beta. because i saw many crashes on youtube and do not want became a "beta tester". Even 12.3 feels like beta sometimes.

i was only at the beginning of the project.
So i took snapshots and switched from "4.6K" to "BMD Film".

Got a problem with Davinci Resolve 12.3.2.008
Win7

I shoot RAW with my Canon 50D and convert to DNG using ML MlRawViewer_1_4_3.
In Davinci Resolve i set the White Balance to Costum
Color Space = BMD
Gamma = BMD Film 4.6K

With the new DNG Files... i cannot select "BMD Film 4.6K" anymore.
And with the old files.. if i switch to Rec709 and than set the color space to "BMD" again..
i also cannot choose BMD Film 4.6K anymore. Only "BMD Film".
I graded all the footage using "BMD Film 4.6K". So i have to use it.

EDIT: maybe it has something to do with an update from and older Resolve 12 Version.
In the old Version i could select BMD Film 4.6k. and in the new version not. (but the program is so smart
to keep the 4.6k files in that 4.6K "Gamma" space mode)

It would be helpfull if someone can tell me if he can use "Gamma = BMD Film 4.6K" in Resolve 12.3.2.008

Neuer Rechner. Quicktime installiert. Resolve 12.3 installiert.
Resolve startet OHNE Fehlermeldung. Super!
...

Werde nun also immer tiff sequenzen aus Resolve rausrendern müssen.

Dann wechsel in Premiere. (Ohne danach noch mal zu Resolve zu switchen)

I deinstalled Quicktime and Resolve 12.3. Reboot.
Install Resolve 12.3 again (+ Quicktime installer direct in the Resolve Installer. )
Start Rersolve 12.3 and NOPE... Quicktime still not work.

Deinstalled all again. Reboot.
Resolve beta + Quicktime. Result: Quicktime still don't work.

I give up.

I get a new PC at the end of the week.  I will install quicktime and Resolve on the new PC...
and check if i get the same errors and same render-problems.
If this is the case... i simple will render out tiffs (LZW). Might get a little huge but thats the only solution.
I still wait that someone at the blackmagicdesign forum answers to my posts. Lets see.

thanks for the feedback.
