General Chat / Re: Sony A7R
January 05, 2014, 01:55:59 AM
I know ML is not a commercial product. I also think it really would be a good thing to do this on other platforms. If the ML guys won't someone will. That's OK. I'd like to see RAW recording directly from the camera. I also don't have much hope for BlackMagic. They are photo and video support people, not camera people. Their little Pocket Cinema camera is only Video. Its actually not a good thing. I picked the Sony to get some top notch photos and video all in one. I will be doing photo shoots and interviews on the spot. I needed both in one package. The current video from Sony is great but hoped for Raw directly from the camera. Blackmagic helps with the shuttle so I can record uncompressed from the sensor via HDMI. Did not do so well with my Canon as Canon does not support audio out from the HDMI unless it is already recorded. Sony outputs clean HDMI and quality audio.

I am OK with what is available for the Sony line. I still think ML is a top notch product for Cannon 5D II and III. Its ok for my T3i.

I do hope someone will step up to the plate for Sony. I won't talk about this any longer. I hope you guys see a need for other platforms too. But you know, I do believe that these guys can do the same for Sony.

So back to ML and Canon. I will go see what has been done with tragic lantern for the T3i. Its been a bit since I upgraded. I do however love the full frame camera vs the crop sensors from the other cameras.

Black Magic will do well when they actually do both the Cinema in full frame and the pocket cinema in full frame. So many excellent manual lenses to use for them. I love my old glass.

Later. Thanks guys for being patient with my post.

Yes, the answer HAS always been NO but this CAN change. It would be WORTH the change. Canon is not the only GAME in town. But I will leave it here for now and come back some other time and ask again.

I am a staunch ML fan and I already knew that the answer was no. Ive also seen in my life time many who refused to change go under.

Canon is good, don't get me wrong. But times are still changing. So too should ML. It has a place on many platforms. Only if the builders are actually good enough to pull it off. Maybe its because they ...... :)

Actually not. If this can be done with the Canon why not other cameras? Just an honest question. I currently have a Canon T3i with ML installed and the new Sony A7R. Just wondered. If its not possible or not going to happen it would be nice to know from the folks who actually do the programming for Magic Lantern.

I only ask because I like ML so much I'd like to see it on other platforms other than JUST Canon.

Any chance of any work like this for the Sony A7R and maybe bring full RAW Video for this beast? I do use the clean HDMI out and record to my Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. Works good but would like to have RAW directly from the CAMERA. Its a long shot to ask but thought I would. I like ML for my Canon. I like my new Sony Too.

Thanks

Feature Requests / Audio output through HDMI
September 21, 2013, 12:26:43 AM
Now I know that if I record I can play back with audio via the HDMI. What I am asking is if there is a way to get audio out through the HDMI cable when the camera is just ON. Like when I connect my camera to my TV and do some fun takes but without actually recording. Problem is there is NO sound being sent through the HDMI. Reason I ask is because a I can record what the sensor sees but need to also record audio at the same time without having separate audio recording equipment to haul around. I think the HyperDeck Shuttle 2 could open you to the world of Raw and Apple ProRes from a camera that won't record video that way. But if you use a Canon camera it needs to output audio when the camera is JUST ON. Not just while recording.

Is there a way to allow audio through the HDMI cable out when the camera is just on?

Actually, if I do not know something then someone should be kind enough to teach rather than say don't bother. That is why I am here, to learn. That means someone needs to teach. Where then are the teachers?

Ok, figured out where to turn it off. Decided to turn it back on. Noticed it went away in brighter areas and got worse in darker areas. So what are Zebra's and how does it help you take better images. I have my settings pretty low for RAW video on the camera. I noticed that when it dropped frames it shut off the video. If it does not drop frames it will continue to record. Now for the next question. What program do you use for processing RAW Video? No Quicktime or FCPX. Mmmmmmm. Another road block. Aperture works OK for RAW images. Looks to keep lots of detail that you can dig out and still have good looking images. Now to do this for RAW Video. I have some OK older manual 35mm lenses and hope to get myself a 5D Mark II or III so I can utilize them to their fullest. Something the current Black Magic Can't do. At least not until they actually come out with their 4k Production camera in Super 35. Looking into that once it actually comes out so I will continue to play and use my T3i to its fullest extent. I have a couple lenses that work great for doing MACRO work which I really like.

Well I have been hammering away at this and installing and reinstalling and looking around the menus and found a few items. I have the latest nightly build. One issue I now have is white junk all over my camera monitor. Looks like white snow static. But the good news is I was finally able to get some RAW video without it shutting down. :) and I also got audio record working. Or it is working. The results are no better than what I get when I don't have ML installed with my little Shotgun mic. My Production Mic is best but I must use an external source then sync. No real big issue. Making headway. :)

Nice thing is that the nightly build allows more video settings. There is so much out there it is mind boggling.

No go with Audio Recording. Still no go with RAW either. It is odd because I see others have it working in RAW and even have RAW video published. ? I am miffed at this.

I have been trying to get Raw to work on my T3i with zero luck. What exactly do you have installed for your ML software? I have a current nightly build but Raw keeps shutting me down. Just trying to figure this out.

Can you help?

No need to have it perfectly sync'd. I just tried to use audio recording and could not get anything to play back. Not even when I opened it in QT. Shows x amount of MB file size but has nothing in it to play?

Would be pretty cool to have the camera record .wav while recording so you have on your camera a separate audio file and video file. That way you don't have to use two systems for good audio and you don't need to use Canon quality (crappy) audio. And if your out in the field you don't have to take along all that extra equipment. Just connect a good shotgun and go.

Don't see using audio recording while recording. Tried it and it froze my system. Had to remove battery. When rebooted it did not load the modules due to being turned off incorrectly. Rebooted again and all was fine again.

Reloaded sixthirty from Tragic Lantern. Keeping video Raw turned off. Back to standard HD Quicktime Format. Works just fine that way. Going to check out this Audio Recording function. Interesting. I usually use a nice USB Studio mic on my other computer when recording in my office. Much better audio that way but I need to sic it to the video. Not hard to do.

Which is the best build at this time? Link? So much to look at but really don't want to try every piece. The current one I have has some funky glitch that flickers the monitor from one screen to another. Weird and can't really explain it. Just don't want it. I want 16Gig Movies.

So with all things as they are, shooting RAW with a 600D is pretty pointless. So I am going to go back to ML 2.3 and go from there again. I may actually go with a BlackMagic Camera instead of mucking around with the Canon.

I would love to have a camera that has a 35mm size receptor. The BlackMagic does not but will do RAW out of the gate. I am at odds with getting a BlackMagic or 5D III. If cost was the only issue the BlackMagic is the winner hands down.

Anyone have any thing to say about the BlackMagic Camera?

My card will do 95 MB's. The default size for Raw on the 600D is 950x540 24 fps and that is the only choice you have to pick. Do I need to change any Canon settings? Just can't figure out why it quits so fast. The standard format works great. Actually still going to keep ML because there are a few things I do like. But for RAW. I really don't want to have to tear out what little hair I have left out figuring this mess out. I also figured that Final Cut Pro X does not open raw, at least not the ones that were recoded on the card. What program will open Raw Video Files?

Now video stopping after 37 frames. Wow. This really sucks. Guess I should just ditch ML until I find a good deal on a 5D II or III.

Raw Video / Raw 600D (T3i)

Got the newest nightly build installed and got all the original files saved in case I want to go back. I started with version 2.3. No modules. Now with the newest nightly build I was able to get a modules folder and stuff on and a new autoexc file. I figured out how to have the modules auto install on startup. I went to the video section to enable Raw for this camera. All seems quite fine but when I try to start a video it only captures like 345 frames and quits. I get no RED light indicating any video. I do have an Extreme Pro SanDisk level (10) 64GB SD card that will do 95MB/s. I figured I needed one like this when I got my camera a couple years ago. I like some of the features of ML but wanted it to do Raw Video. I want to play with RAW even in the smaller output format but it does not seem to like the build.

Which build should I be using that actually works on the 600D?

Pete :)
