Tragic Lantern / Re: WAV not sync with MOV
January 24, 2014, 06:52:47 PM
hi i did camera work on a short film a few months back, i wanted to shoot Raw on my 50D but because of the short amount of time we had (i only had 1 fast CF card for raw)
it was best to shoot ML H264 at 24p with sound recorded on a Zoom H4n. The director e mailed my saying the WAVs are not syncing up to the video and the video is playing back
at 20% faster than normal speed like 'UNDERCRANKING ON A FILM CAMERA' . I figured out that what ever you set your frame rate to in H264 it always dumps the video in a 30p
file. So the editor had to SLOW DOWN the video so it matched the duration of the WAV in Final Cut, so just a 'Change Speed' from 100% to 125%.
That was my first time shooting ML H264, there is other frame rate options like 'EXACT FRAME RATE' not sure if this gives a true 24p or 23.98p .
hope this helps.

Hi all , i too shoot NON crop and huff when i see a nasty moire pattern. Im also a Video Encoder in my day job and sometimes have to de-interlace video for clients. That got me thinking...For one of my shots in my Canon 50D Raw vid 'Raw Sun' i used a de-interlace or anti flicker filter in after effects and that removed a bit of moire on a shot of a boat at sea...
Then i thought of trying a quick test in virtual dub..turning a clip from Progressive to interlaced then applying a De-interlce
and blending the 2 fields and NOT throwing away field 2. The downside of 'blending fields' gives a slight motion smear
(as if a slow shutter speed has been used 24th of a sec ect) because the material is progressive to begin with it might not
cause that Smear/slow shutter effect. So treating the clip as Interlaced and then Blending Fields (lines) might eliminate maybe all moire as ive already applied it to one of my shots. To think of it I guess this process would have to be done at the C-DNG stage????
Just an idea...

--dogmydog--

I also forgot to mention details of 50D overheating experience:
I was DOP on a short film and location was in a mens toilet.
and noooo it wasn't one of those movies before anyone asks.
There was a crew of 9 inc 2 actors, no windows, had to turn aircon off
for sound, camera was on a tripod so not getting any heat from my hands.
And it was around the 4th/5th hour when the room was getting its hottest
i noticed the 50D was crashing/freezing every 3rd take using a Komputerbay1000x 64gb
settings was H264 CBR, CBR factor 2.4x that i lowered to 2.0x for slightly better stability.
Batteries were 1x OEM canon, 1x Hamel, 4x Duracell (very good value for money).
Director called a lunch break, memory card was very hot.
After the camera cooled down we shot for another 2 hrs and 50D started crashing again.
Lucky we was filming the last few shots.

hi
When my 50D was overheating in the middle of a shoot i was opening the card slot door and taking the CF card out for a few minutes.
I also thought if that happens again i was going to try and use a can of compressed air and turn the can upside down
so the icy cold air cools the camera. NOTE: i was thinking  of closing the card slot door when spraying icy cold air as moisture would get into the card slot.
Or the other method im going to try is a fan from a graphics card or those cheap 6-10volt PC case fans wired up to a 9 volt battery with a switch and maybe use the hot shoe to bolt it to the camera and i could let the fan run while i set up the next shot.
I would NOT use one of those hand held pocket fans as the blades are made of child proof rubber and are rubbish!
It would have to be a fan with hard plastic blades like in a PC tower, im sure that would cool the camera in 2min?

Hi all,
I havent read the whole discussion have you tried the free Cineform codec?
Thats the only one i use as the compression is very very low hardly any i think.
Its a slightly compressed Uncompressed codec...somthin like that.
My work flow is (WIN7 32bit) Raw > Cdng> After Effect CS4> Minor Colour correction> batch export to Cineform.MOV
Then into Premiere, final edit > Cineform.MOV archive.
I was exporting to Cineform.AVI but was getting bad moire so i tried Cineform.MOV (Quicktime Quality slider set to MAX)
and that results in alot less moire.
The files are quite big but not that bad.
Hope that helps.

hi again, forgot to mention about lenses!
Im on a tight budget BUT lenses are also important to me, buying the biggest and expensive one will NOT
always give you the best results! Try not to fall into that trap. I have a selection of old manual lenses
the cheapest one was a Minolta 28mm f2 at only £17. I also own a bog standard canon 18-200mm
with IS and this has given me some of my best ML RAW footage so far
http://vimeo.com/76921800
i also own the canon kit lens 18-55mm f3.5
(currently unused with raw) and hope to shoot some tests with it soon. Lots of people hate the 18-55 kit lens
but i have shot some very good night stills with it. i Also have a Manual Olympus 50mm F1.8 (£35)
This is a truly stunning lens made of Metal and glass and would outlast any plastic lens, theres plently on e bay.
All the footage i have uploaded has all been shot with 2nd hand manual or 2nd hand canon lenses (non L series).
SLR lenses new but mainly old were made to capture to the resolution of FILM!
Keep that in mind when choosing your next lens.

Hi dood.
I to have a 50D and when using after effects cs4 on WIN7 and importing Cdng's and then exporting .AVI's i was seeing
lots of moire. Then i changed to exporting .MOV Cineform and with the quality slider set to MAX (in the quicktime export settings)
i noticed there was a lot LESS moire. Im currently getting my head round Resolve 10 lite, after a few tests it seems After Effects
is giving me slightly less moire than resolve. I still need to do more tests at different resolutions.
Not sure if this information helps you and your computer set up, but exporting a .MOV is noticeably better.

Hi all, at the start of this month i woke up early to a orange sunlight bursting through my window and my first thought was......RAW!
I grabbed my Tripod, 50D, stuck a 18-200mm canon EF on and jogged to a nearby towerblock and got some nice London skyline shots.
After the towerblock shoot i had a shower and took a drive from London to Brighton as i was visiting family.
Then i said to my relatives eeerrm i dont get to see much of the beach in London...eerm im just popping to the beach with my camera.
They all huffed! Heres a short montage of the footage...

Many thanks to the magic lantern team for all their hard work and for giving
low/no budget film makers (like me) the chance to taste raw video and the awesome images
the dynamic range can offer.  ;)

Hi all, Heres a Quick and Dirty test with my Tokina 12-24mm lens F4, All hand held (no Rig).
While on my way home from work i thought id grab a few shots under warm tube lights.
Shot as 1584x662 (2.39:1) This was also upscaled to 1920x1080 when creating the Mp4
from Cineform.

When i first started converting my footage i was using this process:
RAW to C-DNG to Cineform.AVI and i was getting a softer lower quality file
i then changed to -
RAW to C-DNG to CINEFORM.MOV and im getting 100% quality.
Just a tip for those on a Windows 32bit machine and cant run resolve!

Many thanks to ML for all their hard work and giving a low budget film maker like
me the chance to shoot RAW...

aaaaaaah, i'll try the "Gradual Expo." (this has always been set to off) i'll try the highest frame setting so the exposure ramp will be very sloooow. that should work fine for now. "Exposure Overide" has always been 'ON'.
I'll do some more tests today as im going shopping to dusty piccadilly circus London sunday afternoon GMT. i'll choose
a picture style with BOLD colors like LANDSCAPE. (i find any excuse to shoot RAW now)
***OH and for anyone who's interested im trying some re-chargeable 'DURACELL' batteries (DRC511)
that are only £14.30 from Currys/PC world. They charge up fine in the OEM canon charger, show remaining power
on the camera display and last just as long-ish (turning off camera between takes) 2 weeks of usage seems fine so far.

Again many thanks for your reply's and to the Magic Lantern team

August 31, 2013, 05:52:00 PM
hi all, When ever i get a new video camera i always try a super low light test. After buying a 50d a few weeks ago ive been trying out the RAW video option. Having RAW video to a Low Budget Film maker like me is a god send.
So here is a quick and dirty low light test with a old Olympus (mc) 50mm F1.8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8ghVA_GHwg&feature=c4-overview&list=UUn6D3jzuIdbAjFhjz3hIywQ

Also at 1min55sec as the van passes the frame you will notice that a auto exposure adjustment happens.
im not sure why this happens as everything was set to MANUAL. Ive noticed this on some other shots
ive done when ive been panning from a darker image to a brighter image, ive owned 7D for almost 3 years
that ive used for video only and never noticed this on the 7D. i tried the AEB option in the CANON menus to
try and bracket the exposure shift, ive also tried the AV/TV exposure lock option but the exposure still
seems to shift. If anyone could shed some light on this i would be grateful.
My next test are going to be with my ANAMORPHIC lenses...cant wait!
I would like to thank the Magic Lantern team and all their hard work.
