Shot entirely with Magic Lantern Raw on a 7D.

Completely edited and colored in Davinci Resolve 11.

I just cut and edited this piece on Davinci Resolve 11 the other day. First time working with it. Had a bunch of crashes and random issues, but thats what you can expect from a beta release.
In the end though I was able to get everything I needed out of the program.

Hi everyone. Here is my latest nature video. Shot totally with Magic Lantern Raw on a canon7D.

Completely edited and colored with the brand new Davinci Resolve 11.

Thanks for watching!

A lot of this video is from scattered short films/music videos in Maine. Its hard to remember the exact lenses/settings used every time.
Most of it was shot on a 35mm Rokinon lens or the Tokina 11-16 if I was using crop mode...which in these examples weren't very often.
Only the horse footage and a little of the beach footage was used with the VAF Mosaic filter. If you look closely at the nature shot that has the single tree branches in the foreground...around 30 seconds in...you can clearly see some pink fringing around the highlights on the branches. This shot was from a raw module WAY back in August 2013 when the whole raw thing for 7D was pretty new.
I've also noticed that like an idiot I say "mlr" format instead of "mlv".

Shooting crop mode with the Tokina 11-16 is wonderful. It really compensates for the "zoomed in" shakiness as you might expect...and the lens itself is amazingly sharp and I love the color it produces. Its also a super fast lens. HIGHLY recomended...though I hear Tokina has a newer version either already out or coming out soon....you might want to look for that. As far as other lenses go, I tend to stick to manual lenses and I'm a big fan of the Rokinon/Bower/Samyang etc series. All of those lenses are the same manufacturer as far as I know. They are usually extremely sharp and with huge fast aperatures. Best of all they are usually very inexpensive. I'm assuming this is because they don't waste any money on autofocus or anything fancy...instead sticking to basic ultrasharp glass with a great focus ring for smooth racking. I'd hold up some of my $450 dollar glass against some $2500 Canon L series glass ANY day and I think I'd come out ahead.

Overall this video is more about what you can do in Davinci than strictly what you can do with Raw. The early stuff in the video is mostly used to describe color correction instead of total grading. I feel like people breaking into editing tend to combine Color Correction and Color Grading into the same thing...but they really should be separated into two distinct concepts. The farther you get into the video the more ridiculous I get with the color GRADING but it is purely an excuse to show off how far you can push Raw footage with Davinci Resolve.

Davinici Resolve will be releasing a full editing suite in their newest incarnation in June and I personally can't wait. It will be very gratifying to be able to do everything (assuming the system works well) in one program instead of a workflow between Premiere Pro and Davinici and occasionally After Effects.

As it stands whenever I try to do the "roundtrip" technique (using REEL names) with Premiere Pro and Davinci I always get error messages when I try it with Raw files. I end up having to do a more "old fashioned" technique of rendering out all my Davinci Resolve corrected files into Premiere as high quality dnxhd files. I think this is limiting and pretty frustrating. In bigger projects I would prefer to output a whole timeline from Premiere INTO Davinci Resolve and then do final coloring...but of course this is when I run into the errors. As I said before...having a self contained system (and hopefully for free like Davinci 10 Lite) would be a dream.

I have actually been shooting on the beach outside my house all fall winter and now spring. Theres nothign more gorgeous than a beach in the winter, devoid of people and totally untouched...with early morning fog and mist drifting above the waves while the sun starts to break through on the horizon.

I will eventually post a longer and more informative video that details my workflow and equipment in a more Tutorial type video.

I am, for the record, in NO way shape or form employed or endorsed by Davinci, BlackMagic, Adobe or any company outside of my own production company TrustyDuckProductions. I do however, for what its worth, HIGHLY endorse Magic Lantern and the work they do and wonderful software they provide.

Everyone on this site who is an end-user and not a coder needs to back up and think clearly about what is going on. A group of people (ML) are providing a service that we DON'T pay for. They are taking extra time to make sure the service is safe and won't ruin our cameras. They also invented the system and technique and whole concept of these Canon "hacks" to begin with. Another group/person works somewhat independently...doesn't follow the rules, consistently puts cameras at risk according to the polices and procedures dictated by the original group, and you blame the original group for pushing out the other party? 1 they have every reason to do this and 2 they have every right to do this. Not to mention the fact that they aren't excluding and banning the creator of TL from the site or punishing him/her.

Almost every complaint I see is from someone who is being unbelievably selfish. You are complaining because you WANT more. Because you WANT TL and ML for no other reason than that you want your end-user experience to be served. You are taking no consideration for the fact that this is all free. Show some compassion, concern, and understanding for these coders. They are trying to protect their reputation, their credibility and your own personal end-user cameras! Can you blame a person for taking the time to make sure a product is safe and practical just because another person is plunging forward recklessly?

If you created a product...and then this other guy started working with you but then started going off on their own with your idea and started taking big risks with it....what do you think YOU'D do?

Support TL all you want. I personally support TL and will continue to do so. I love what TL has done....but I don't blame or discredit ML for the decision they have made. I personally do not have any ability to conceive whether or not TL is risky or making bad decisions, but my opinion has absolutely no bearing here. ML gets to make that decision and they have made it. It is perfectly reasonable. Maybe people should try working WITHIN the system for the greater good instead of complaining because they aren't getting everything they want for free on a silver platter.

Hey everyone. I hope I'm not breaking any rules posting this here. It is my Indiegogo link to my page for a movie I am producing.
I feel it is fitting because we are shooting the film entirely on magic lantern raw...plus we mention this fact in the video and give props to the good people here.
If I'm breaking any rules I apologize. (I couldn't find any pertaining to posting of kickstarter/indiegogo stuff)
Please feel free to delete this post if it offends or is pushy.

Here is the page

and here is the video alone...

I'd just like to jump in and thank ML and TL and 1% and A1ex and honestly EVERYONE who has done any coding at all for this. Honestly. Its insane what you guys have done. I'm a professional cinematographer who works on a tight budget and with no added expense my ability to produce quality material has gone through the roof thanks to the magic of magic lantern and tragic lantern and everyone. Regardless of who did this or who did that....I want to make sure that you all understand that I (as a representative of the "end-user") is more appreciative than you guys will EVER KNOW. (and let me add that I am personally unaware of the names and details of the coding people...or really how the whole system or hierarchy works so I don't want to leave anyone out when I say thank you. If you are ANY part of the team I don't mean to exclude you!)

All of that being said...and please forgive my possible ignorance here...but if there a way to see the 7d Raw Thread that seems to be now closed? I won't complain about any decisions that are made regarding splitting or combining groups or whatever; its certainly not my right or concern. There is, however, a LOT of useful information (especially for people starting out) in that original 7d Raw Thread and I think it would be a shame to lose it. Maybe if necessary it could be locked so there are no more posts on it but still available to read?

Anyway those are my thoughts and let me say again that you guys have ALREADY done the impossible and ALREADY achieved miracles. Seriously. Not even kidding here. Raw high resolution video on my old canon DSLR? CRAZY!!! and amazing! THANK YOU ALL.

That is interesting and frustrating. On a film set it would take too much time to delicately take the filter out of the camera for crop shooting and put it back in for normal shooting. What would be a good workflow do you think? 2 cameras, one with the filter and one not....but of course that gets expensive. Maybe get all the crop shots in a row and all the normal ones after or before...but of course that is difficult depending on the style of the shoot. Hmmm...this one will take some thinkin....

Hey everyone. Here are some examples of coloring capabilities with Canon 7D magic lantern raw using Davinci Resolve. All shot in gorgeous Maine, United States in 2013 and 2014.

So I'm using the mosaic engineering filter now on my 7D. I've heard that it works for the aliasing of course in regular shooting....but when you go to crop mode do you still need the filter or are you better off keeping it OUT of the camera when shooting crop mode? I guess I'm asking if the filter should be used for BOTH modes, or if it should only be used for non-cropped normal shooting. Thanks and keep up the amazing work everyone!

Hey everyone. Here is another video I recently shot with Magic Lantern Raw and my Canon 7D. Love the work you guys are doing. I hope this video converts more people to the idea of shooting RAW!

Tragic Lantern / 7d Raw with Mosaic Filter

JUST shot this the other day with the 7d. Still haven't figured out how to get the audio working but thats ok I'll check around. LOVING the new Mosaic Engineering filter I picked up. Its a little hard to focus with sometimes, but the quality of the video is improved so much in my opinion. Near essential with RAW on the 7D.

LOVING the progress you are all making with the RAW utility on the 7D!

Feb 2014 in Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport Maine at about 5:00 am or so. Shot entirely with Canon7d MLV with the Mosiac AA filter.
