Duplicate Questions / ISO Limit
August 18, 2014, 12:48:29 PM
Hey,

I've tried to search this but had no lucky.

On the 5D3, when taking photos, you can set the max ISO when it's set to auto... but in video this doesn't seem to be possible.

When shooting without controlled / changing light, auto ISO is preferable... but it jumps to ISO 12800 automatically with being able to limit it. On the screen, it looks bright enough, so you can't really tell if you're not keeping an eye on the ISO.

I would much rather set a limit of say 3200 (like I do in photo), and then when it gets dark on the screen, I can easily just adjust aperture or shutter speed, without allowing a bunch of grain to enter the shot.

I sort of assumed this would have been possible with magic lantern, but saw no evidence of this.

Thanks,

Is this not a possibility?

I've shot a number of professional projects (and a few personal ones, which I use as a "test-bed"), and most recently, even over cranked the footage for 48fps. Worked out well.

The biggest issue i've had is filling up a card (without checking how full it is), and then usually the last clip is corrupt that stopped. Another minor issue is with external monitoring in that the monitor shuts of for 2 seconds on record, meaning all my clips have excess data at the start.

Share Your Videos / TVC - 48fps 5D3 raw

Hey guys,

Shot this with my hacked 5D3. Used the info on here to set the camera to 48fps and then stretched back to regular viewing in post. Worked pretty well.

Short blog-post with more details:

I've been using MLVMystic. Have you tried that program? It's working awesome for me, and it extracts the audio files for me too, but you still have to match audio and video in DaVinci Resolve.
This has been my workflow for the last 2 months or so. So far, it's working out well.

Hi guys,

Thanks for this wonderful tool. This is the only one that works properly for me on my 5DMk3 with MLV. I really hope you continue development and it's something i would gladly pay for.

Nevermind the really minimal interface, it fixes the vertical banding that's been driving me nuts for months!

Cheers!

I gotta say, this is the only tool I've actually gotten WORKING reliably. The UI is a bit clunky, but it reminds me of how easy it was to use RAWMAGIC before MLV.

Will you be needing sound (whether record direct or sync later?)

Then you'd need to record to MLV instead of RAW.... and this you'd need to test. I was working with the Mar 17th build last week and it was extremely buggy and kept dropping frames (and the black level issue). Whereas some quick tests on the April 24th build haven't shown the same issue.

So you really do need to test, or ask people on a certain build, as they vary.

You can also just do this in Resolve...  if you set the TC to the TC on your smart slate, it will automatically sync your audio files to your video files on output.

How is this done exactly? I ended up following Ryan's as all prores files were created and didn't want to re-render... but it would be good to know.
Thanks,

Hey everyone,

I've completed a short film using this method and submitted to the Sony PROduction awards. You can check out the film here (and vote if you're so inclined :)

(note, that's the 720p version. if anyone would like to see the 1080p one, I can provide you with a link).

Just wanted to say I was able to convert using MLVconverter on this fine,. to .dng's and a wav file.  /// but also to use XnView to convert the .dng's to dpx.

MLVConverter isn't doing anything on my end. I click convert and nothing happens. Unable to find more on this... any help?

How about a status/progress bar?

Seems to be running well on OS X 10.6.8. Canon 5dIII. Doing test runs today.

Update: Also with os x 10.9 Mavericks and everything I could think of. Very happy to have this!

This and Resolve Lite makes a raw workflow that is doable and free. That's quite something.

How are you getting this through resolve? I've used mlvmystic to create the dogs... but once in resolve the audio doesn't sync properly (have to manually do it... which for hundreds of clips would take forever)... but mostly, resolve simply does not want to export dngs that are created by mlvmystic

I'm not having any luck with MLV through resolve (to get it to prores).

Firstly, audio syncs only the first wav file to the rest of the clips.

And resolve itself cannot export, giving me the error: "Recording failed with error: codec is not opened yet".

Been reading up on MLV development and status all day, am able to record with sound... but once I get to post it's broken.

I've tried every utility and script i've found here. From MLVmystic to MLVConverter to the recursive0.4.... no luck on any of these. All have issues that break the workflow and I cannot get the footage into a useable state (i.e., prores via resolve).

great thanks. found it.

Hold on, are you trying to play DNGs, or extract DNGs from your MLV?

MlRawViewer can play CDNG (though it's not well integrated on Mac yet). It can't yet extract them but there are other tools that can - mainly mlv_dump.
ah, yes. found thread on MLV converter.

thanks!

Open a terminal, and go into the /Applications folder, and from there into the MlRawViewer.app directory to find the mlrawviewer binary (it's in a subdirectory).

Then launch it with (replacing the path names...):

./mlrawviewer /path/to/CDNG/directory /optional/path/to/audio.wav

(In case the paths have spaces in, put quotes around them, e.g. "/path/to/dir with spaces/")

not working. i don't know terminal too well though, so may be missing obvious steps.

is there a guide anywhere on how to do this? getting the wav out of the .MLV is easy enough (tho its one at a time... no batch options?)... but i still need the DNGs, instead of a prores file.

Anyway, in theory mlrawviewer should be able to play that combination, though you probably need to launch it from the command line giving the directory for the DNGs followed by the full path to the WAV file.

How would I do this on the mac?

Has audio recording been restored in any builds since september? Searched the forums but wasn't able to find anything conclusive.

Thanks

Thanks for this test. I read SH's blog post but never got around to trying it myself. Your results look surprisingly nice. I can see this being very useful for 4K and bad for relationships :D

Did you stretch the fabric across the whole rear of the lens and just use the mount to hold it in place?

Yup, stretched it over and then did my best to keep it stretched with one hand, and then let the locking into the mount keep it in place. Worked well, but you'd need to make sure you have enough fabric cut off so that you can stretch and hold it.

Hey everyone,

I had read an article from Shane Hurlbut a while ago, but wasn't sure how it would work with EF lenses. So finally decided to test it out, both on the 5D3 raw, and with my fs700 for comparison.

If anybody has wondered how it would look and work (i did), you can check out the comparison image below. More info on my blog as well.

Hi, thanks! Everything was handheld and stabilized in post.  Most of the lenses I were using were unstabilized (Rokinon cine lenses) so I just relied on FCP X's internal stabilizer and Lock & Load's stabilizer to smooth out the jitters.

As for convincing people to go for raw...I'm working with a young team at a progressive creative agency.  They trust me.  If the raw fails, it's my ass, but so far so good.

awesome. which agency?
#24
very nice! liked the feel of it. all the little dollies, did you use some support or just handheld it and then stabilized?

i did something similar, but didn't focus on people. thoroughly enjoyed this.

i wonder how you've convinced people to go for raw in dubai. so far everyone is scared, and keeps preferring that i shoot on the fs700

A Valentine's Video Gift to my wife.

music and video by llirik
lyrics and vocals by khan

Most of the footage is shot from our first year anniversary in Austria, with a few select shots from the UAE.
Music and lyrics were done back in 2010 as a birthday gift, and this video is a follow up as a present for Valentine's day.

Shot entirely on Canon 5D Mark III using Magic Lantern RAW hack (using the August something build)
Edited in FCPX 10.1
Graded primarily in Davinci Resolve 10, even though it was a headache.
Touchups and additional grading in FCPX 10.1 using various plugins.
