Raw Video / Finally i did a job with ML RAW on MKII
August 02, 2014, 12:51:34 PM
When ML RAW was "released" i just had to buy a MKII. Since then i played around all this time and spent a good amount of time in this forum.
So i thought that now, that i finally realised a project using ML RAW i would share some thoughts here too.
This is the final film:
(I actually dint't get my Vimeo Movie to embbed here - someone knows how to..?) -thanks jimmyD30  ;)

I shot it with very skeleton crew - only me  ;D  So it was quite a hassle, but i had all the freedom on this project. So i gave it a try.
The post-workflow again was a lot of work. I had about 250-300 GB of material. I previewed my MLV files in "MlRawViewer" and exported DNG sequences.  Those worked fine in premiere luckily - so i was able to do a reference-cut. After that i had to process all used DNG files through After Effects (camera raw) to get my colors.
The grading was done in premiere.
For the slo-mo i used twixtor (mostly in premiere again).  A lot of footage dind't work for twixtor though - so this unfortunately reduced my selection. It would have been really good to have had filmed on 60fps.  But well, not even on the MKIII you are able to film 60fps on a "real" format.

To sum it up - i am really pleased with what you can do with ML RAW.  The workflow is a bit tough but i would do it again. Only the limitations of the MKII could be a showstopper (mainly format-wise).  I didnt have a lot of problems with the aliasing - but i am shure they would show up when you least need it! ;P   If i do it again i will probably shoot on a MKIII - which i will rent, i guess. But this experience also aroused my interest to higher end RAW cams and working with them - probably with a proper DOP then though ;)

good one justinchase!
this shows really good what RAW does to a dslr cam!  Especially with the frontlighting shots.
And: good flow/tune also!  8)

AE reads Imagefiles.  So - you are good to import your DNGs right into AE.  Just select "image sequence" while importing. I would even leave lightroom out of this workflow actually..   At least that's how i do it.

hi,

i have been converting my raw files (shot on canon 60D) with raw2dng. From there I import to lightroom as DNG, edit, and export as DNG. To actually convert from dng to a movie file I'd like to import to After Effects and convert there. Does anyone know the specific workflow (DNG>best possible video format) within adobe after effects?

Regards,
Dennis

Hi

i am not having a lot of luck here. First - most mails from you don't make their way to me.  I just wanted to install the newest versions, but no mail..
I however received the links for the previous versions some days ago (one of them in the spam filter).

DrasticPreview is working - but only playing 5 Frames.
(I can get around this when putting the playhead to the clip end, reversing, and then pressing play..!)

Mediareactor is installed but none of the Apps (QT pro, AE CC, Premiere CS 6) was able to open the .RAW files.

I am on a Mac / OSX 10.8.5

Looking forward to have it all working smoothly on my computer!  It's absolutely what i was looking for.
With the plugins - will it be possible to preview the RAWs in OSX finder already?

ok, I got it.

Screen Layout:
If set to bottom Under 16:9 is does the overlapping info.

That was the setting I've always used. I chose a different one now, bottom under 3:2 and its now ok.

I did not install the font folder - thats what messed my display up.  Now its beautiful :)

Is anyone else still having problems shooting with an external monitor? Each time I try shooting raw the camera crashes when it finishes recording and must be rebooted.
i am still on 2013/07/25 build.  However - i do have this problem with a smallHD dp6.
I found a "work around" - unplug the monitor to start with, record one RAW.  Plug it back in and it doesn't crash anymore.  At least with me.  Also i figured out, that even though it crashed - the files were recorded.
