Now it's really not worth it to buy these cards.  Shoddy performance and now shoddy customer service.
NO THANKS!!

aalloo you have to remember that, according to specs, the 5D mark III can write to CF with a maximum throughput of 160 MB/s.

Yeah, probably won't be able to increase the speed/resolution, but recording to SSD is still the objective.  Good luck aalloo!!!!

Music killed my ears in the beginning too.  I still watched it, but had to almost mute the speakers.  Also, I think that song is way over used and you gotta watch out for that.  Might wanna try to create some original music or find other sources for music.

good effort

What computer are you using?  USB 3.0 card reader?

General Help Q&A / 5d3 60P with MLV
January 27, 2014, 10:30:48 PM
Yesterday I was going to shoot some footage in 720p 60P but when I try to select 1280x720 in MLV settings the settings keep going to 1280x448 and says I have to stretch the video.  My card is definitely fast enough to do 1280x720 because I've done it before on an older build.  How do I make it go back to 1280x720?

#6
Latest build : "Built on: 2014-01-26 16:11:15 -0800"

Crashed my 5d3 while it was doing CF card test when I first turned it on.  I removed the battery and it's been fine since.  I have the crash logs if they're needed.

Also, why is the MLV RAW getting stuck at 1280X448 when I try to shoot 60P?  No matter how I try to reset the camera or change the canon setting first then enable the MLVRAW it won't go to 720. It will do 1920x1080 24P just fine.  Forgive me if there was a post on this but I haven't been able to find anything about it.

Thanks

No solution, huh?

There are certain chipped adapters that are made for the 5D3 specifically.  I tried to use my old chipped M42 adapter that I bought for my 7D (AF confirm worked on 7d) and I had this issue too, so I just scraped the chip off and instead use focus peaking in ML to pull focus.

When you buy a chipped adapter, make sure it states in the description from the seller that it works with 5D3.

Like this one :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3rd-Generation-AF-Confirm-M42-Lens-to-Canon-5D-Mark-III-650D-Camera-Adapter-Ring-/360535349968?pt=US_Lens_Adapters_Mounts_Tubes&hash=item53f194dad0

It is "3rd gen" that works with 5D III

Could always just buy a 5D3 with cash from a big retailer with a great return policy  ;)  "I just took it out of the box and put the battery in.. AND NOTHING!"

Offtopic, sorry for that... Since i'm new to 5DM3, how is SD better than CF?

Sorry, that was a type-o.. I meant to say SSD, not SD

I edited my post and fixed it

Compare this post... http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7125.msg87502#msg87502  to all the happy people using and accepting it in this post http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2602.0

Still think it's a lot of people? Don't be a whinner.

You know, there are probably a lot of people out there that are using the nightly builds that don't post on the forum.  Like mva said, there are 10s of thousands of views on ML RAW tutorial videos, you think we just all watched it over and over again?

But anyway, it's easy to rationalize why it's acceptable considering the benefits that overshadow the consequences.  I was one of those rationalizers.  You can see my post where I was telling some people that they were making a big deal about nothing, and that the benefits are worth it—rationalizing.  But then I started to think more about it, and changed my mind.  This is like getting a tattoo, it's permanent.  That's a big commitment to make, and I really would like the ability to remove it if I wish.

I'm not asking for a stable version with no bugs, just a simple uninstaller.  It brings comfort to know that it's removable, unlike the fellow who tattooed his x-gf's name across his chest.  Sorry for the dumb analogy, but so far this boot flag is a permanent modification.

The money I offered is just an incentive, they don't have to take me up on it and no one is going to force them.  I know this is open source, but like others have mentioned only a few have the knowledge to address this issue, and I want them to think about it a little bit more and possibly come to a solution, sooner than later.  I will happily extend the deadline if Alex is going to be gone a while.  I don't want it to seem like I'm saying "DO THIS, NOW!!"  I simply just want it to stop being put off month after month, like its been.

I'm not saying there's no need for this. I'm saying it may not be as big as some might think, because yes, my needs are met by CF cards, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one. For me it would be a matter of cost, and that gap is closing down quite fast, with good 128GB cards already at $300 (so the gap is less than half of what it was 4 months ago).

SSDs are better and cheaper, but make sure you have a big-enough market before you get a mortgage to finance this. That's why I suggested a kickstarter campaign. Still problematic, though, if it turns out it's not in your hand to fulfill your promise, because of some technical impossibility.

Ok so, you would have to buy 8 of those 128GB cards to equal 1TB...Thats comes out to $2400.00 LOL  What if I don't want to live with dumping that 128GB card every 20 min of shooting?  I know 20 min is plenty of shooting most of the time, but what if you're doing more than that?  Plus I don't know if I completely trust those $300 128GB cards as the top brands that are known to have no issues are still in the $500-$600 range.  So I can buy 8 of those for $4000.00 then?

Besides, the sweet spot for CF is 32/64GB...The 128's are common to drop frames, even the 1000x ones—now we're back to 12 min recording time, for $200 (transcend 64GB)

Quote from Canon Rumors forum: "I ordered a Transcend 1000x 128GB about 10 days ago. It just arrived. The fastest write time I could get was around 83MB/s. It's not useless, but it won't get 1920x1080. I'm returning it today. No big deal."

I highly doubt a large capacity SSD would have this issue.  But there's also the issue of the camera not being able to use more than 128GB..so that's another issue we may be faced with >:(

I agree that they should definitely make 120% sure that it works before starting a campaign, obviously.  Also, it's easier said than done.  You can look at old threads where lots of talented people tried different things and it didn't work and they gave up.  SSD is all around, in every way, better than CF.

If you really believed what you posted you would have already made donations which by the lack of the title Supporter under your screen name you haven't. I've made several any time something I've found useful was released I've donated.

I agree with Marsu42 its a devaluation of their hard work and hundreds if not thousands of man hours a few people have devoted to understand these cameras.

I also don't agree with offering some small amount of money to get your pressing issue attention... IMO thats wrong in the spirit of this type of open source project.

I would love to donate, but I refuse to get involved in bitcoin currency.  If they had a paypal, id donate immediately as they deserve money regardless.  This is just an incentive to get the bootflag issue fixed as many people have been asking for months with no answers.  I personally would continue using the bootflag so I can shoot raw anyway, but I want options.  I don't look at it like opening Pandora's box or something like that, I doubt the devs will become money hungry or something.  This is just an incentive.  If $300 is a small amount to you maybe you can pledge an extra 1000??

As far as where the money goes, that's the discretion of the dev that can come through on this.
If Alex is the only one who can tend to this and he's gone, then we may have to wait till he comes back, but I'll wait to hear something first.

Oh and one other thing..MY pressing issue?? This is a lot of people's issue, go read through the forum.  And I'm the one who decided to put up $200 bucks, and only one other guy is chipping in so far.  I would think that's a pretty nice gesture.  Don't be a hater.

This offer is just wrong in so many ways.
I have to disagree.  Do you like working for free?  We spend thousands on these cameras, and then even more thousands on gear.  How come the magic lantern developers aren't worthy enough to make some money?
This offer is a way of giving back to them and adding some incentive to fixing a issue that's been raising a lot of concern.  I could just wait until they provide it for free, but I think they deserve some money.  I think more people should man up and put some more pledges, especially those who were whining about not being able to disable the bootFlag in other threads.  Even if it's $20 or $50 bucks.  It all adds up and the devs really do deserve it.

why? if it cost almost double? thx

The H4N has noisy weak preamps and the H6 doesn't.  Also, sometimes the H4N doesn't have enough gain for certain mics even at max.  Plus the H6 has 2 more XLR inputs than the H4N.  The H6 is worth the extra money.

Feature Requests / $300 offered to developer
November 11, 2013, 05:24:06 AM
I will pay the developer who provides a safe way to remove the 5D3 bootflag to the masses- $200 via paypal

My offer is until December 1st

Thanks

PS - I'm also offering a $100 to the developer who can break the 30min limit for non-raw video on the 5D3.. Can be movie restart but it must not drop frames between clips.  In camera audio recording during this would also be preferred if possible.

December 1st deadline as well.

UPDATE : I urge anyone who would like to add to my rewards to post their pledge here.  We all know that removing the bootflag has been a tough one, so lets make it worth their while! Dev, you will not release the files until you are paid up to ensure that everyone keeps their word on their pledge.  THANKS!

Feature Requests / Re: Movie Restart on 5D3?

Just a thought, because I'm stuck with this bootflag in my cam for now anyway...

I will pay the developer who gets restart working on the 5D3 $100 via PayPal.  I may not ever use it but I want the capability if I need it some day.  It would need to be seamless though, as having dropped frames wouldn't be good.

For the test, just set it on a tripod watching a TV, it would be easy to check for smooth transition that way.

All I know is it would be much better to record to a large SSD and not need to keep dumping cards.  The camera is definitely the limiting factor and would never utilize the speed of an SSD, but for the convenience of having more recording space and a cheaper price, SSD would be a way better option than CF.  They have 1TB Samsung EVO SSD drives for $589.  I paid $349 for my 64GB Hoodman Steel.  It doesn't take a genius to realize SSD is a far better option.

Make a proof of concept that it works and I will happily pre-pay for a unit!

You should build a hackintosh, better performance and only a fraction of the cost.

I agree, this would be awesome!  I don't want to spend the money on the atomos, or others like it, just to record more than 30 min.

General Chat / Re: How can one donate?
November 07, 2013, 01:11:18 PM
I would like to donate to the devs too.. you guys make our world go round

I looked into bitcoin, and it's really not something I want to get involved with.  I'd rather stick with the good 'ol dollar.
If you guys set up a way to paypal I would love to send over some money.

I have a hoodman steel CF card, it's very expensive, but I've never had any issues EVER.
I believe the Lexar cards are just as good and a little cheaper so go with either and you will be fine.

The Komputer Bay cards are a great value and a lot of people use them without problems, but you know the old saying: "you get what you pay for", and with video production the last thing you want is to get home and find that all your footage is corrupted.
