General Chat / Re: Why is Magic Lantern team not working with Canon?
« on: November 09, 2015, 11:37:04 PM »
Canon doesn't need ML guys to implement RAW video. They intentionally leave it out of their DSLRs because they need to set their different camera lineups apart. They still want to be able to sell their cine cameras.

This is a very n00bish question as I have never shot a day-to-night timelapse.

The ML settings override the manual Canon settings, right? So they take care of the changes in exposure going into night?

Beautiful commercial. Loved the shots and the audio. The soft-spoken dialogue was great, too.

You did VFX? Like what? Just fireworks?

That was a really cool video. Nice work :)

Raw Video / Re: Real world use of RAW video on DSLRs?

I have shot and completed one music video in RAW thus far (way back in June 2013), and am now working on my 2nd and 3rd music videos in RAW (just shot recently).

RAW is absolutely glorious when it comes to using it for music videos and short film type work.

Something run and gun like a wedding would not work out well in RAW because of the sheer amount of time you need to be shooting.

I'm completely changing my workflow now to incorporate DaVinci Resolve and RAWMagic, so this thread is no longer relevant for myself.

Feel free to delete or leave it up for others who may have the same question.

- -

I shot footage in 30 fps (RAW).

When running the RAW files through raw2dng, it spits out the DNGs and also a ProRes (HQ) .mov file, but in 24 fps (like it's just guessing the frame rate, which it may very well be).

1. Is there any way to adjust the behavior of raw2dng to spit out a .mov file with matching frame rate? It's not a huge deal, but it just threw me off when I realized time durations were off when comparing with my final .mov after color-correcting the DNGs.

2. Also, I can't see a way to simply turn off ProRes encoding feature. Can I do that if I just want the DNGs?

(raw2dng says it's "Version 1.0")

Raw Video / Re: Uncompressed 14-bit RAW video testing - 5D Mark III
« on: January 06, 2014, 06:33:14 PM »
Hey guys. Here is my first attempt at the 5D Mark iii. I'm using the Dec 27th build and sometimes i have to remove and return the battery for the camera to boot (simply switching it on and off doesn't help) does anybody else have this issue?

ML is installed on a Toshiba SD card (30mbps) and footage goes to a Komputerbay 1050x 128GB card.

Thanks for your time guys and do have a Happy 'belated' ;) New Year!

Beautiful shots!

I believe I'm using an older build, but I do have the same issue sometimes (having to remove battery).

I'm a Little confused about Raw Modules.
(In fact, I am finish a movie in ML RAW during 4 months and I tried not change firmware from the beginning) .

- I upgrade ML in my 5D III.
- I found two similar modules: MLV RAW and RAW REC.
- Wich I have to use on Macintosh?

Any idea of thread (No technical please) can help me.
I believe MLV RAW is a feature which allows you to record as a new .mlv (magic lantern video) format.

I would stick with RAW REC.

Maybe someone who knows more can help you out.

Well .. this is weird. It seems that the green channel is misaligned with the RB. I analyzed it in RAWDigger and it seems that the green channel is actually shifted.
So I processed with RawTherapee. In the method of demosaicing AMaZE, as expected, had the same effect, with a "grid." With VNG4 algorithm, the grid was eliminated altogether. In AMaZE I tried the alignment options in "green equilibration". Managed to pull off well.

Although he managed to solve, I not the faintest idea of why this happened.  ???
Thanks! Good work.

No, I haven't. I may start at the beginning with that clip and see if the same thing happens.

I believe the DNG already had this pattern/lines in it.

But it seems pretty narrow.. like to this specific shot. I haven't noticed much of it anywhere else. Just on her face here. Strange.

Raw Video / Why these gridlines/pattern of "noise"/pixels in my footage?
« on: December 18, 2013, 12:43:42 AM »

I'm shooting 1880 x 800 RAW on 5D Mark II.

This process shouldn't matter after the RAW2DNG stage, because I can already see this pattern of "noise" in the DNGs within Camera Raw/Photoshop.
So is it a fault of RAW2DNG or is this just normal for how the 5D Mark II shoots RAW video?

2) Open DNGs in Camera Raw
3) Export as TIFF
4) Open TIFF sequence in Quicktime Player 7
5) Export as video

EDIT: FINALLY, found a RAW file of similar size and pulled the HEX values out of it.. thank goodness I finally retrieved this footage!

I am getting the "ain't a lv_rec RAW file" error on one of my joined RAW files... all other RAW files are working. I don't know what went wrong :(

Is there any way to "unjoin" the smaller pieces or otherwise save this footage? :\ (I deleted the individual RAW parts (.RAW002, .RAW003, .RAW00x...)

Thanks so much.

Support for Small HD DP6 with 5D Mk II while shooting RAW

List of common HDMI issues (5D3 Only)

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

Note that I am using the Mark II, not III. Hopefully they fix it for both.

bump for update

General Chat / Re: Anybody still sticking to H.264 after testing RAW?
« on: June 13, 2013, 09:50:08 PM »
.H264 film is comparable to JPEG Low in photo, just as RAW film is to .CR2 Large in photo. There is no data to recover, as white is white and black is black, for lack of better wording.

I don't know that I agree with you or the guy who posted above you.

There is no question that you can indeed "recover" a LOT of dynamic range by pulling the whites and raising the blacks when dealing with RAW data.

You can't achieve nearly the same results when shooting h.264.

This is how ML is showing up on my DP6 at full res:

If I force the HDMI output to be low res via the setting in ML, it appears fine.

This is my version of ML:

Raw Video / Re: Raw video on 5DMK2

Yes, I'm on Mac.
I don't understand the workflow behind this. You join the two pieces and the it becomes a single raw file and you convert in in raw2dng? If yes, how do you do it? ::)
Are you successfully joining the files?

As in:

cat M0000001.RAW M0000001.RAW002 > Output.RAW

Then drag Output.RAW into raw2dng.

Can you simply explain what you have done? Because I upgraded to the 31st may build and I did a 5Gb long video(split in two), but now I'm not able to join them. And when I try to convert the RAW file it gives me an error!
I am using Mac OS X and can successfully join RAW files and convert to DNG.

Are you on Mac as well?
