General Chat / Re: Video editing rig advice?
March 28, 2014, 11:56:23 AM
Thanks again for all the replies folks. Getting closer to what I think I want.

A question about drives. Is it best to have an SSD to run the OS and programs, and HDD for general storage? Also, what exactly is RAID?

(I apologise for my relative lack of computer knowledge!)

That's a brilliant reply, thanks!

The only reason that I was asking is that I don't know a huge amount about computers. Hence, why I asked the question so I would know the basics of what I would need.

You've definitely given me plenty of information to give me somewhere to start learning about what I would need in my rig. Cheers.

Cheers for the advice guys!

I definitely can't afford a Mac (I'm a final year student with a serious lack of money!)

This question I always find pretty useless because you basically get what you pay for.
You're saying what you want to do with it and also specifying a price.
But it's always one or the other, unless you say "I need a computer for word processing and don't want to pay more than $1000",
then that's a reasonable request, also a stupid request as every computer does word processing.
Just buy the fastest pieces you can afford because if someone says for a Raw video editing rig you need to pay $9000,
would you pay that much? And/or try to buy second hand.

Not really a useless question. I have a certain budget and I'm looking for advice on what I can get within that budget.

General Chat / Video editing rig advice?
March 25, 2014, 06:22:53 PM
Hey guys,

Basically I'm looking to get a new PC for video editing. I'll mainly be editing 1080p footage from my 60D, with a view to editing higher resolutions in the future (not necessary at this point in time, though).

I'm looking for something around £1000-1200 ($1500-1800). Either buying a ready-made system or building my own.

What advice would you give in terms of CPU, GPU, RAM, hard drives etc?

Cheers!

Paul.

Hey guys,

I recently shot a bit of RAW using the .mlv file type. I've tried looking for info on a workflow to process the .mlv but can't seem to find anything on it. Could any kind person link me to somewhere that I could find this?

Cheers.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

So I have ML Raw working perfectly on my Canon 60D on one SD card (SanDisk Extreme 45mb/s) but I recently bought a new one (SanDisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s) and it doesn't want to work properly.

I'm pretty sure that I installed it the same way on both cards. The problem is that the raw_rec module won't load (as well as the other modules):

Any solutions?

Thanks :)

Here's another raw video test with the 60D. Just followed my cat around and put a few clips into a wee 'short film'!

Shot in 1728x736 (2.35:1). Adjusted sharpness, exposure (shadows, highlights, contrast etc.) and a bit of noise reduction.

Marekk, what resolution did you record the video in? It looks brilliant, just wondering if it had much up-scaling!

General Chat / Re: Old prime lenses for Canon 60D?
December 01, 2013, 12:25:57 AM
Thanks for the detailed response, Andy. I'll have a look at some of the lenses you've mentioned.

I've been researching a bit about old M42 lenses like the Helios lenses and old Pentax one's and  they seem like a decent bet for a budget user like me. Just think I need to do a bit more research!

Thanks again for the good reply.

General Chat / Old prime lenses for Canon 60D?
November 30, 2013, 04:37:16 PM
Hey guys,

I was wondering if any of you know of any decent old prime lenses that I could use with my Canon 60D (with an adapter). I'm a student, so obviously I'm on a tight budget.  I've heard that old primes can produce really good image quality.

I mainly want to try these for video, with a bit of photography here and there. I'm thinking about lenses around the £40-50 mark ($70?).

Thanks!

Paul.

Great video showing the capabilities of RAW video. Gives us a better idea than the typical flowers, babies and pets videos!  :P

Here's a very quick RAW video test. I used the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 for the first shot and the 'nifty fifty' for the other shots.

Shot at 1726x736, DNG's edited in ACR and the rest done in Premiere Pro CC.

Not perfect but I'm fairly happy with the outcome!

Brilliant video. A couple really impressive shots. If only I weren't a student and could afford a 5D3!

Don't be afraid to use the lesser crop modes - I find 1280x... upscales really nicely & you get longer recording times!
Also, remember to change the Picture Quality in the Canon Menu from SRAW to S2 (jpeg) - you'll get longer recording times.
Turn Global Draw off when recording.

This is probably a stupid question, but... surely if picture quality is set to S2, you won't have the same ability to manipulate the video as with SRAW?

Hey guys,

I've just started using RAW on my 60D but I'm having real problems with noise in all of my clips. Is there an easy way to get over this problem?

As far as I know, I'm using update #12.

Even with the noise issue, the level of detail and dynamic range you can get with the RAW footage is amazing. Thanks for all the hard work you developers have put into this!

I'm quite a novice with all this stuff. So, I was wondering how to actually install this onto my camera.

Do I just do a low-level format of the card with my 60D, copy these files to the SD card and install like the standard ML version?

Thanks.

ok, here is a fresh build of ML for 60D with all previous raw_rec additional features like lv_af_raw, black_bars, global draw on/of, autoexpo module and DUAL ISO :)

What do you mean by "really starting to look good?"

I wouldn't get your hopes up for a stable release of the 60D any time soon. It has a hardware limitation of 20.6 MB/s (or something like that) so full HD recording is not possible.

I just mean that the resolutions people are squeezing out are good enough to work with. Each little improvement is nice to see.

I'm aware that we'll not get full HD recording, but even lower resoultions, when up-scaled, are far better than H.264.

Hey guys,

So I've been following the development of raw video on the 60D for quite a while now. It looks like things are really starting to look good!

I was just wondering (and I hope this is the right place) how close we are to seeing an official stable release of raw video for the 60D? I realise that it takes a lot of time to perfect something like this.

Thanks, and keep up the awesome work you are all doing!

Great video. Loving the quality of the RAW! Can't wait to test it out on my 60D.

I was just wondering; what resolution you recorded this at? I presume you up-scaled it to 1080p?

General Help Q&A / RAW video for 60D?
May 16, 2013, 04:15:46 PM
Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I can't seem to find it! Basically, will RAW video eventually work on the 60D? I've seen that it works on the 5Diii and 600D but have yet to see an example on the 60D.

Hopefully this will help others with the same question too! Oh, and thanks to all you developers for this awesome achievement.

Cheers in advance,

Paul.
