Problem 1: You have a situation where you want to focus and expose for one small area, ie. portraits with a strong back light. You always want to focus and meter the eyes, but you often want to recompose into the light.

Your options (at least with a 5DII) are:
  • -Use evaluative metering. This will auto-lock metering when you half-press the shutter. However, it will consistently underexpose, and often by an unpredictable amount. You have to apply exposure compensation and fix the rest in post.
  • -Use spot metering and manual exposure lock. This adds an additional step of tapping the exposure lock button every time before you recompose. When you forget to lock the exposure, the subject will be a silhouette.

Would it be possible to get auto exposure lock (on half-shutter press) with spot metering?

Problem 2: Doing the same thing in liveview mode. Live view mode seems to always use evaluative metering. Would it be possible to get spot metering in LV mode and to lock metering on focus?

I asked for something very similar:

Canon is very restrictive in fps options, usually single-half-max speed.
For example Nikon in D600 offers a user-selectable option for a "middle setting": 2-3-4-5-6 fps.

Let it be 5 fps for a Canon 7D :)

I agree!! This is very frustrating

Probably yes :)

Operable even without any flash mounted.. just tried.

Feature Requests / Flash compensation in 6D
February 26, 2013, 01:10:43 AM
I use flash compensation often and the way Canon made it in 6D is stupid: I must remove my eye from the viewfinder and look into the rear screen!
Perhaps this is possible to make: pressing ISO button for more than a second (or two successive presses?) activates a flash compensation with indicators in viewfinder (instead of ambient exposure compensation)?

Or * button that I never use anyway :P

One more thing: Canon 6D chooses a lower speed if the AUTO-ISO runs out of "available ISOs" (e.g. max), I think this cannot be changed.
But it is frustrating - I wish the minimum speed be "fixed" (because better to have a darker image than a blurry one!).
At least an option will be fine..

In Nikon D600/800 you can set minimum allowable shutter speed either by specifying a fixed value or a value based on a focal length. However, the second option also has a further option: +/- two stops so you can prefer faster shutter speed for "shaky hands" or a slower one if you shoot say landscapes and/or use a stabilised lens.
In Canon 6D this "focal-length linked" minimum shutter speed is rather bad implemented - choosing 1/50 for my fixed 100mm lens for example. Also a range of fixed speeds are limited (1/125-1/250.. only full stops).

Just made a simple check:

D600, M mode, AUTO-ISO set

1/15, f3.5   ambient exposure correction set = 0      (ISO100)
1/15, f3.5   ambient exposure correction set = +1.7 (ISO250)

And the second image is visibly lighter than the first.
Note, in the viewfinder there is always "needle in the center", only when I press the correction button I can see the amount set.

Nikon has it done very well. Why not just copy the idea? D800/600

Feature Requests / Re: "On demand" spot metering
February 20, 2013, 08:44:31 AM
Of course, so let's it be an option :)
BTW, I had had once in ancient Olympus OM-4 both "shadow" and "highlight" spot-metering biases (cca 2.5 stops in either direction..)

Yes I do it 90% of the time :)
But almost never P for the reason described above..

.. and when the spot-metering is engaged this way - there should be some kind of visual indication whether an exposure compensation is also engaged (blinking exposure comp. indicator perhaps?) - because for usual spot metering this usually must be at "0".

Another possibility is to have "disregard any exposure compensation set when engaging on-demand spot".
It may confuse some people and is better set in the menu .. however this one would be very practical in most real-world situations because I usually already have some compensation set when I decided "spot metering is better for this". So make this an option.

Feature Requests / [ALREADY DONE] Shutter release delay
February 19, 2013, 11:34:17 PM
I always wanted some shutter delay because in the series of three slow-shutter shots there is always the second one that gets the sharpest image. Finger "stabilization" must play something in it.
Now both 5D III and 6D solve this problem magnificently with a silent (read: smooth) shutter option (always ON on my 6D !), but there are other cameras lacking that - so a shutter delay of say: 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/2 would be nice :)

Feature Requests / Limited-range apertures Program mode
February 19, 2013, 11:26:54 PM
Program mode is so many times useless because it goes into max aperture (or /less so/ min aperture).
These apertures are either of low quality or too shallow for accurate AF.
What is needed is P mode with say "-1/2 f-stop" meaning "first usable aperture is the max one minus 1/2"

This may include
-1/3 f-stop
-1/2 f-stop
-1 f-stop

I guess you see what I mean.

Thanks for trying anyway :)

For some reason 6D shows only horizontal level indication in viewfinder/top-plate lcd.
I hate that because most of the times I need it for *vertical* shots (for example with ultra-wide lenses).

Feature Requests / [IMPOSSIBLE] MA bracketing
February 19, 2013, 03:13:39 PM
Is this possible??
For quick checking of new lenses.
Personally MA /micro adjustment/  "based on a distance" will be great.. my 5DII and 100/2 are fantastic at long distance at "-20", and at 2-3 meters at "0"

Feature Requests / "On demand" spot metering
February 19, 2013, 03:04:17 PM
My suggestion:
I sorely miss "on demand" (active only when button-pressed and keep pressed) spot metering. Assignable to any of thumb-reached buttons.
To explain: I want to use average/or any "normal" metering/ for most of time but in strong contrast situations I will press the button for precise spot-metering of important area. The way Canon wants me to do - switching to spot metering, pressing the memory button.. and than back to average is very cumbersome.
You might offer the option "toggle" .. and please don't do it re-settable after one shot, because is is usually needed for several shots in succession.
