Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 7D
March 31, 2015, 08:30:07 PM
Hi all. A simple question. It is possible right now shoot RAW in 7D with a external monitor plug in?. Im working in some complex shoots and i need the help of an focus assistant.

The last time i tried it, i get a lot of pink frame and some buffer problems (the clip ussually stops reccording in just a few secconds).

Thank you so much.

Is there any real chance to see Dual-Iso Raw Video on a 7d in the near future?

the main problem i see is to measure the delay of the audio driver etc (DMA, I2S, DAC and the other way respectively ADC, I2S, DMA).
i dont know how to *reliable* quantify the delay in every single step.
we barely know how they work and getting a clear picture of all the delays would take about 2 weeks i guess.
plus we would need measurement equipment (e.g. a picoscope)

when knowing all this, all we can do with software and the current understanding would be some kind of soft sync, which is not a real genlock.
softsync means, we measure how much we are off the source clock and try to correct the delays so the exposure start is close to the audio trigger.
still the real exposure start can also jitter and we dont know how much that is again.

audio signal --> ADC --> I2S --> DMA --> software --> exposure timer --> software --> exposure start

and every single element in that queue is probably running asynchronously with unknown delays and jitter.

So, yes. It is possible a Soft Sync.

Thank you, g3gg0 and a1ex, and sorry for the almost duplicate post.

I all. I don´t speak English very well, please give me a chance to explain myself.

I heard the most importat problem trying to shoot in 3d with Canon DSLR is the "sync" problem with both images. I see a lot of tests recording with silimar cameras and IR Control to start recording just in the same moment, cofiguring both IR at the same frecuency.

My question is, it is technically possible make a Module who says the other camera when start reccord and when start to draw every single pic? The conecction between cameras is possible with Mini-Usb2Mini-Usb (A lot of Android Apps uses that interface to connecto Tablets/Smartphones to a Single Camera).

I think the other big problem is about focus, but we already have a Module to control the AF with the arrow keys. Of course we have to make a particular "rig" with the exact angle for each focal distance (even for each particular lense)

What do you thnk about it?

Now I can get 2k continuous.  2048 @ 24fps  1:35

How can you reccord at that resolution? Don´t need around 100Mb/s?

With the lastest build´s and Double buffer, i can reccord at 78Mb/s, wich gives me 4:3 1728x1036 continous. (75 Mb/s needed)
Single Buffer it´s a bit slower, aroung 77Mb/s

I have a Lexar 1000x, but i think it´s a bit slow.

hey guys...
what are these files : M30-2311.IDX & M30-2311.MLV that  are in my EOS7D folder ...? I have some pictures taken yesterday and 2 video files RAW, one simple and one testing about 2K and today that I have time to process them I found these files, that have never saw again....
any help?

Short Answer: The files ARE the video Raw. To see it, you have to process it with mlv2dng.
Long Asnwer: Read the thread. It´s very long, but there´s a lot of usefull info.

Hi everybody!! I buy a komputerbay 1000x 64gb, i hace a máximum writte speed of 91mbs in the 7d, is that ok?? Continuos raw for 1728x1156, buy i dont know why, i cant change this setting for higher resolution, is for the card??

Thanks a lot!!

I think you can´t get more resolution in a 7D without enable Crop Mode.

Check if dual_iso was really enabled and working or cr2hdr is the problem. The effect of dual_iso isn't hard to see, if you zoom to 100% either in camera or on the PC (for example using XnView) you can clearly see the interlaced lines, also the white balance is usually completely off and the shot has green and magenta areas.

Tks for the tip. Dual Iso was really enable (Green Light), but the effect was not applied. I try with differents ML Nightly build, and i found the problem.

The 22 an 17 Nov just doesn´t work for me, But 25Nov works really great!. Problem Solved!

I having a problem trying to do my first Dual-Iso.
I configure the camera in RAW mode, load the module on ML, reboot and then enable Dual-ISO. But when i load the file with cr2hdr, i get "Doesn´t Look like Interlaced ISO" error.

I try to restore defaults of ML and then do it all again, but i get the same error.

Any idea?. Im using the last stable ML version (22Nov) on a 7D. I asume im making some wrong becouse is not a common error.

Tks you.

Which ML version?

The Auto-loaded from EOSCard. But like you think, that´s problem of ML Version. I downloaded the last Nightly build from 1% and now everything is ok now, the problem is fixed.
Thank you very much.

I have some problems too. The Canon MENU shows information that shouldn´t be there, like remaining space (and show it in the middle of the screen). This happens at the same possitions in all original Menu screens.  Any idea?.
I try the entire process twice.

The wrong infoprmation is: Remaining CF (Up-Left) Time (Left) Color temperature (Center) and remaining battery (Bottom)
Thank you, im a little afraid about this issue

7D is now doing like 2054x XXX @2.35:1, at around maximum 77 - 82 mb/s in crop mode, but that crop factor is 5184/2054 x 1.6 = 4.038, that means that 7D will lose that wide angel side. To compensate, running to maximum 25XX x 1XXX will require the write speed over 110mb/s, which is around almost 50% more throughput than it is now.  At 2.5k, it will acquire a crop factor like 5184/2500 x 1.6 = 3.3, so a ultra-wide lense like EF-S10-22 will get a horizonal viewangel equivalent to approximately 33mm, which will make 7D quite amiable.

Thank you very much.
One last question. At 1080p 24fps (Official Canon I mean), is the record some like continous? (Obviously untill 4GB/Max Fat32)

I really wish that Canon would come up with a new firmware that would allow raw video capability on default. Greedy bastards!

I read in someplace that Canon can´t allow other format system instead of FAT32, becouse if they allow it, the cameras would be considered Videocameras and not just  photography cameras (And that means more and more expensive taxes in Europe and America).

Someone can tell me how fine is the record now?. I read the whole thread, but (as you can see) i don´t speak english very well and cant understand a lot of explications. I´m worried about the drop/wrong frames more than resolution. How viable is use raw for professional works?

See you!

Thanks G3gg0, this is the best christmash gift that a 7D owner can desire.

Merry Christmash.

Now its time to play CustomBitRate.
