What is the goal with running Linux on the Canon DSLR? Is this to lead towards completely custom firmware for the camera? or just to say my camera can run Linux? I just wondering if there is going to be a real useful reason to have Linux on the camera.

In the above example of the black car, the issue with the 6D (if you can call it an issue), is that only using the center AF point, it needs to be over a contrast (the white sticker or whatever), and if you simply tried to focus off a door panel or the hood, it's going to struggle.  The other focus points on the 6D are probably to far from center, and you're likely to snatch focus at some unwanted spot.

The 5D3 using the 9 center points (so you're still getting focus in the middle of the frame), doesn't need pinpoint accuracy.  If you're close enough, 1 of these 9 points will find a contrast to lock onto.
Exactly.  Action at the track happens so fast at time is not always possible for the one center af point to be positioned correctly on a black car for the 6D to lock focus when dark outside. Once the camera is in AI servo mode the speed light on camera does not have an af assist beam either to help in the low light situation.

I have a much better understand than my helper regarding what parts of the car to point at as you noted,  but it is still much easier and quicker for the 5D3 to lock focus as you noted.  6D af points are to far a part and there is only one cross type point.

Sometimes I have to pan to take shots. This cars front end slowly kept going up off the line.  Highest point at the tree.

I do mainly 8x10 prints and some 11x14 and 16x20 prints.  I never had a customer complain about a noisy picture even at 3200 iso. A little bit a noise reduction fixes that. That is a non issue for me.

Audionut noted about taking photos of his kids sports. I rather have a 5D3 for that given the much higher keeper rate with higher fps, which is more photos to choose from.

Astro and portrait photography I am sure the 6D will be fine. I am just saying if you ever want to shot any type of sports you want to keep the 5D3. I wish the 6D at last had two sd slots.

I have the 5D3 and 6D.  If you every want to shoot sports as well still doing portraits, you may want to consider keeping your 5D3.  You can record raw to cf card and raw or jpg as a backup to the sd card.  I like the idea of having a backup if the main card fails on a paid shoot.

My second shooter misses some shots at night with the 6D.  The 5D3 always locks on given I am able to use the 9 center cross type points and let it select which one it wants to use.

This is a great example for me being black car at night. I would not trust my helper with my 6D to try to get this shot. The car was moving up to the line. I started see it shooting flames on the side exhaust. I took three quick shots and  I was able to capture this.

I shoot in raw, and I have not really notice the 6D really being that much better for noise compared to the 5D3. If there is a different, it looks to be a small difference for me. I am thinking the 6d saves the jpg in the camera with less noise than compared to raw. For me raw noise different is so small, I cannot really notice the difference.  I am shooting 3200 iso at night. 200-400 iso during the day. Only at 100 iso with my studio lights for product shots.

I also like the higher sync speed for my studio lights with the 5D3.  1/200 is great. I wish I had the money for the 1DX to be at 1/250.  The shot below is with my 5D3 using the pocket wizard flex ttl5 with hyper sync with my studio lights.  It takes alot of light to over power the sun when trying to shoot larger objects like cars. I believe this was 1/500 for the shutter speed. The concern with slower sync speed on the 6D is more of the flash it cut off by the shutter. I would have to be at a slower shutter speed. I need to be at least 1/320 slower shutter, but given the car is moving I cannot do that, as it would show too much motion blur.

I was taking photos at the local drag strip today. I accidentally left dual ISO on. Sometimes I am worried about certain custom paint designs not coming out correctly, so I turn it off when needed. I very happy to see this photo turned out great! This is not an extreme dual ISO example. The owner of the car bought multiple prints of this photo.

These are not extreme examples, but show practical use for me at the track. 100-800 ISO.

It was a big help for this shot.

There is a bug with the last new builds (July 13th, 16th and 22nd): the file browser doesn't work and the 5D MKIII is frozen until I take out the battery.

It has been working fine on my camera. When does it freeze up?

I'm having issues with most of the clips not reading in the ML raw2dng. Is this correct?
I shot seven clips and only 3 would parse through the app.
Current raw2dng for windows. Not sure what operating system you are using. http://acoutts.com/a1ex/raw2dng.exe

Hello in the latest build of lourenco (July 16th) is missing BOLT_REC MODULE.
Is correct ??

Bolt_rec is not compatable to the current raw_rec. You would need to use an older build for this feature until bolt_rec is updated by  g3gg0, which probably will not happen until the new version of raw_rec is created.

New raw_rec works great! 2560x1090 at 23.976fps over 1200 frames before skipping 108.5MB/S.

...and about  bolt rec? ..the same wrong version...
Thanks

The bolt rec currently does not work.  Given it is not compatible with the newer raw_rec. g3gg0 the developer for bolt rec noted it does not work with the new version of raw_rec. You have to go back to previous build if you want this feature for now.

and Soundrecording and ETTR are missing too.
The module Screen says wrong version OldAPI and that it expected version 2.0 instead of 1.3
I thought i did someting wrong.

Ya. I did make a mistake and somehow copy over a old version of the ettr, fileman, and pic_view. Sorry guys. It is fixed now.

2560 x 1072 23.976 fps over 700 frames before frame skipping.  104 MB/s.

June 16th 5d3 Lourenco build has the autoexec file inside the ML folder, is that right? Its usually in the main directory.

Also it seams the magic.sym was replaced with the 5D3_113.sym. What was the change?

autoexec goes to root directly. I updated the zip file to fix this.  The magic.sym is now replaced with 5D3_113.sym.

Last build for MKIII / same thing for me:  stuck after the smiley "enable boot disk". L.
Make sure you enable boot disk on the card with ML.
Use eoscard http://wiki.magiclantern.fm/3rd_party_software

Thinking to remove audio support until the issues will be solved (it may take a while).

Any objections?

abort:
            bmp_printf( FONT_MED, 30, 90,
                "Movie recording stopped automagically"
            );
     if (sound_rec != 1)
{
            beep_times(2);
}
            break;

Fixes it.

Only variation from the default build is I'm using the FPS override with 23.976 and recording audio in the raw video menu.

Audio on, FPS override off, Raw is corrput (even after replacing footer) DNG's are corrupt.

I just notice your updated post. Interesting your saying corrupted DNG with audio on and fps off.

My June 14th build works with a1ex last commit.

I just recorded one large file 62,473,153 KB file size that filled the card. It opens up fine. The last 12 pictures are corrupted, but not too much of a concern for me.

or wait for new builds to test.

The wait is over! I just posted a new build for you to test.  You can check the Nightly builds with Raw recording support thread.

Great video. At .33 seconds what was the f-stop around F4? The camera looks very still. Where you using a tripod?  Using a variable ND filter?

The problem is that i can not see any of the files that i recorded in windows when i plug the camera ind with USB. I can see the card is not empty but there are no files under DCIM.

I normally use a memory card reader to pull the files off the memory card directly. The camera only has USB 2.0 while my card reader is USB 3.0.  I just plug the camera into the computer. I notice it does not show the raw movie files. I am sure it does not show the file given the file type being  raw and not a actual picture. The memory card reader can see all the files fine. I would recommend buying a memory card reader. USB 3.0 if you have USB 3.0 on  your computer. Makes a difference if you have a fast memory card.

I have attempted to load the firmware onto my Canon 5D Mk iii with absolutely no success at all. Perhaps someone can tell me where I am going wrong?

Updated the firmware in the camera to 1.2.1

It only works on 1.1.3. You need to go back to 1.1.3 to make ML work. Given you updated to 1.2.1 it is not compatable to ML.

Nice one man! Would be nice to see to see this ported to the Windows .exe :)

Edit:
*slaps forhead* reading thread properly FAIL. Sorry ;)

There is a new one for windows too now. It works fine over 4GB now. It was able to convert my 8GB raw movie file.

Will these replacements files give more than 4gb recording-time for each clip?

It is possible to record past 4GB. This should be the correct one. I modified the version 1% made.  The over 4GB raw movie file will only convert in linux with raw2dng. I cannot manage to make the windows version to work. This will stop recording when card is full or when the user decides to stop recording.
raw_rec file https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7QlH_BH2m32eDZEbXh5cnZQSTg/edit?usp=sharing

The memory card must be formatted as exfat given fat32 has max file size of about 4GB.

I will post new build and newer modified version of raw_rec later tonight when I have time.

There is also a raw_rec.o file in MODULES folder. Is this needed? New files you posted don't have this file...
The raw_rec.o is not needed. only the raw_rec.mo is needed.
