Share Your Videos / Re: eos m + crane m2 test video

You can tweak the loop feedback of the controller via the mobile app to make it more "fluid". Then it's much easier to get those smooth cinematic shots. This is the weak point of almost all cheaper gimbals (excluding DJI and AlexMos controller and maybe some others). And it's just a software thing... don't know why they can't make it right  ::), I guess, most people don't care.

Share Your Videos / 600D RAW Sunrise
September 30, 2019, 08:56:50 AM
This has been sitting on my HDD for a couple of years. It brought back memories...

I've sold my 600D a while back, but to this day I remain impressed by the filmic quality a always got from this camera.
Even though it was only 1600x680, it looks better to my eye than a footage I get from EOS M or 700D in significantly higher res. Basically, I cannot reproduce the feel I got from that camera.. sigh  :-\
I think that that "feel" is coming from MLRawViewer I was using to transcode the MLV files. As much as i love MLVApp, I miss so much this "magic" of MLRawViewer.
Here is the comparison I did between these two: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=20025.msg213546#msg213546

Share Your Videos / EOS M RAW good for corporate work :-)
September 30, 2019, 08:38:32 AM
Want to share this with you guys. This is my 4th paid video I did for this company with ML RAW.
It's so much fun to shoot and edit this way and again, thanks to all of you devs who are contributing to this project. You are doing a terrific job!

Here are some technical specs:
EOS M + 11-22mm only (with instant 3x crop on SET button you have basically 11-22mm + 33-66mm in one package, no need to change lenses if the lighting is good)
Zhiyun Crane M2 (freakin love this gimbal, like it was made for EOS M :), such a well thought out design and you can adjust loop response to your liking)
Variable ND
1080 MCM rewire
25 fps
1/33 - 1/50
ISO 100 - 1600 (next time I will use faster lens for indoor shots, ISO1600 was too much, I needed to denoise some of the shots)
MLVApp 1.9
Tonemapped preset
-all correction done in MLVApp (this app is getting crazy good..)
-applied custom LUT (for a slight color remapping)
-exported to 4K from MLVApp
-edited in 4K
-final render in 1080p

I'm waiting for my Zhyiun Crane M2 to arrive. I think this one is very well suited for EOS M  :).
It will be my run'n'gun combo with EF-M 22mm and 11-22mm. Basically, with the recent builds from Danne it is now super easy to switch between 1x and 3x crop, so with a 22mm lens it makes for an awesome lowlight combo (22mm f2.0 and 66mm f2.0 in one lens), or with a 11-22mm you have a nice coverage of 11-22mm + 33-66mm. Not bad at all if you ask me  8). Plus those two lenses are exceptionally sharp, so even at 3x crop you are getting a superb IQ.

I was looking at Feyu G6 Plus before. Also a good one.
However if I had to choose a perfect one I would love for DJI to make something simmilar to Crane M2, as the movement fluidity is the best with DJI, or with the original AlexMos controller (ahh.. those old DIY days...  :) )

Awesome dfort! Thank you for your work. Exactly what I need for my two cams  ;D.

I don't know if this is too much ask, but could you make a direct comparison of MLV App and MLRawViewer in C log and rec709? I just want to see how different they look... also see if unchecking use camera matrix in MLV App brings them closer or anything.

There is no CLog profile in MLVApp (at least I don't see any), so I used Log-C instead.
There are different whitebalances between the two apps (MLVApp - I didn't touch anything, MLRawViewer - I pressed WB presset number "3" (the default one was way off)).

Here are the original PNG frames: https://mega.nz/#!jJ1iGSZZ!Im80SRBNw6XewT3x0_y3pIsOdv_ZAcq1-sNkZ8MzZuQ

Proper log profiles are coming with the colour space improvements mentioned earlier.
Yay!!  :P :)

@Jonit This is due to how white balancing is done before debayering, MLRawViewer seems to do it better for that shot. Could you see if MLV App 1.4 is different or better please? there was a small change made between the two in debayer white balance, that improved things, but sometimes didn't.  I want to add an option for debayer white balance, hopefully that will fix your issue.

Here is the output from MLVApp 1.4. Looks the same to me.

Also I'm shocked how close the two look...
Took me about an hour to fiddle with the sliders and curves to match it relatively close to that MLVRawViewer C-Log  :D.

but they're both wrong, as they use sRGB ;)
Can you please elaborate a bit on this statement? I'm not very knowledgeable in that area so would be cool to understand a bit more :). Thanks!

I've been watching some of my old vids and was thinking how good that footage looked even in early days. I've been shooting with 600D back then and I was processing in MLRawViever. I loved that convertor so much. It gave me awesome results and especially I loved the C-Log look. I've been using it as a final output without any aditional grading or color correction. But MLRawViever is no longer being maintained (unfortunately :( ) so it doesn't support newer 10-12bit and lossless compressions. Also it didn't have black point repair capability (which I greatly appreciate in MLVApp) and it also had a problem with overexposed footage where it would put color stripes over that area.

So I thought that I may try to "recreate" that C-Log look in MLVApp and I think, I've got pretty close, but I noticed one thing in that process and that is that video files produced by MLRawViewer have much less aliassing in them. Like the debayer algorithm is doing much better job there. Which is strange as both programs were set to AMaZE.

Do any of you guys have any idea why?
The difference is quite staggering in the final output.

(there is even more difference in another clips)

Probably no longer relevant, as dfort already mapped out these pixels, but I managed to get this picture by accident. I took a photo while crop_rec raw was enabled and this came out.

EDIT: here is the .cr2 if anyone is interested https://mega.nz/#!PUF3nIaa!hjOU46_s7mXEA86B1j9c5KJP3YxybokBMdxYAbKfR-E

@masc just to check, when you're exporting the video (or png file) from MLVapp, are you disabling "Fix focus dots"? If you leave that setting on, as it is by default, I find that additional focus pixels which are really difficult to see show up, and they're not there if turned the setting is turned off.

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, you're right. It was "Fix focus dots" which was causing those pixels.
#13
Thanks a lot for this!!!
I was looking for some app like this in the past and only found some paid programs which could do that. This is awesome free alternative!

@dfort
Here is how to map this pattern:
-results are from Dannes latest build (Feb23), using "mv 1080p MCM rewire" preset
-yes, I'm using MLVApp 1.5. Just lower the exposure to -4EV and enable "Highlight reconstruction" checkbox
-it works only in 10bit (maybe 12bit also - I haven't checked that)

Here are the short example MLVs: https://mega.nz/#!DB9nTIwS!bPMcXWlVzdO8n8ciaoETrjkeQBcVyXYUVtEfdnbWOa4

@Danne
-this may be maybe of interest to you. I found out that when the aspect ratio in Crop mode sub menu is set to OFF (which means that it is in 3:2 aspect ratio), then there is an empty portion on the bottom of the image which don't contain these focus pixels.

#15
Here Is the first example where I noticed it.
So in that map I posted, the middle focus pixels (bars) are missing.

#16
Are those a focus pixels?

I was just looking on one clip I just filmed (1/45s, f5.6, ISO100) where a portion of a frame had blown-up highlights. In MLVApp I lowered the exposure to -4EV and then I checked "Highlight reconstruction". These focus pixels (or what are they) showed up in those blown highlights.
So I thought that that may be an easy way to map them all out if they show up this nicely over blown up highlights with reconstruction turned ON.
I tried to reproduce it by using the same settings and aiming at diffused strong white light. I didn't manage to make them appear again. But then I cranked the ISO to 3200 and they showed up (probably wasn't that over-blown with ISO100).

Testing the Feb23 build. This thing is getting better and better Danne. Thanks a lot for your work on this.
There is a one thing/bug I have noticed - when you go over 1/4500s during recording, the screen starts to flicker. Just to note that...

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it was in 1080p MCM mode
#18
@Danne - here is the MLV DualISO file that is flickering - https://mega.nz/#!6ZtH2YiD!qf_-i6sM8Mc9Lp88x80-U_g_m9chrmriQEmMAZq95wA

there is also another issue with dual iso. i couldn't end up with a video that doesn't flicker when dual iso is on. i tried various iso combinations with still shots and moving camera and it always flickers without any color adjustments. tested 1x3 mode and mv1080 (in which i'm well aware of having smooth videos before). i'll try again tomorrow though.
I'm also having problem with flickering DualISO shots. It flickers ocasionaly on some shots through out the entire clip. But I noticed that on many clips there is flickering in the last second of video or so..

I will upload the file later.

Thanks guys!

@DeafEyeJedi - regarding DualISO settings, it depends on the lighting conditions. During the day, I aim to expose for the highlights with a base iso (e.g. ISO 100) and then I choose recovery ISO a couple stops higher (in this case it would be 100/800). Let's say that I'm filming indoors where is a bright light coming form the window, but there is also an artifical lighting (like in some of the beginning shots), then I would expose for the window (ISO 400 in that specific example) and set recovery ISO to 3200 to "light up" the remaining indoor scene. It works quite nicely I would say.
Sometimes I do it the opposite way, where I film at ISO 3200 and set the recovery ISO to something like 400. I guess it works both ways.. If I'm wrong then correct me please.

And yeah, that 48fps is golden. I like the fact, that on some of the shots (with not much rapid movements), you can slow it down even further with something like Twixtor or Optical flow and not get much artifacts. Pretty neat!

-regarding the 18-55 IS STM lens, I like that lens very much. It's neat and tiny and OIS is great. But what I like the most about it are the flares it produces when shooting against direct sunlight. Beautiful greenish flares. heh  :)

Something to share with you guys... Here I've put together some of the shots from the wedding filming I did for my friend. It's nuts how good the video looks, I'm really happy with the result, even tho it's sometimes a little difficult to focus some of the shots.
And that slow-mo in RAW, that's a dream coming truhe, heh  :o ;D

Outstanding work Danne and others!

I would do all recordings with 10bit 2.35:1 sd_uhs on.
48fps with global draw off.
If the anamorphic mode isn't continuous you can reduce offsets manually by using the skip_left, skip_reight etc to reduce ratio straight in the sub menu. This maybe works straight in Raw video resolution menu, not sure.
Anyway. Tell me what presets you aim to use and we can focus on them for a while.

Yeah, I did all recordings with 10bit 2.35:1 sd_uhs on, only difference was that I had GD on. Didn't have time yesterday to test it with GD off. But anamorphic seemed to do OK even with GD on and recording times were also great (possibly continuous). The only "problem" was with 48fps, where it had a couple of pink frames.
Do you think Danne, that there will be a possibility someday to run corruption-free 48fps with GD on? So to have a proper framing... because I find it quite difficult to properly frame a subject without "framing LV" mode.

Thanks a lot.
#23
Awesome work Danne!!!

I did some tests yesterday with yesterday build and I was getting some pink frames in 50fps mode and also 5k anamorphic - dualISO.
I'm going to shoot a wedding in three days so I guess it will be a serious test for this stuff  ;). There will be also a second cameraman on that wedding, otherwise I wouldn't risk the shots with such a bleeding edge stuff. Actualy, that was my requisition, that I would only film if they allow me to film in ML RAW  8), I explained the risks... All this development in RAW video is so exciting, that I didn't touch the normal video mode in a quite long time and I'm shooting almost exclusively in RAW.

Anyway... the most important modes for me are 48fps and DualISO. Today I tested your current build (30.1.) and I was blown away by how much it improved over yesterdays build.
I got some pink frames, but very few in a long recordings, and now I realized that it was probably due to the fact that I didn't turn off the global draw. Need to test it again with GD off.

Here are my results (with GD on, framing LV, 1:2.35, 10bit)(all recordings stopped manualy):
5K-A-DualISO-sound: 20 seconds - 0 corrupted frames
5K-A-DualISO-NOsound: 14 seconds - 0 corrupted frames
1080_3x3-1648x702-48fps-sound: 25 seconds - 5 corrupted frames, evenly happening in the first half of the clip
1080_3x3-1648x702-48fps-NOsound: 40 seconds - 2 corrupted frames (one after another) in the middle of the clip

SIDE QUESTION: I'm getting 700D tomorrow and I'm wondering in what state of development it currently is regarding to 1x3 mode and 48fps mode? I was trying to find something on the forum, especialy about the 48/50fps mode and I didn't find much :(. If any of you guys know, my question is, if there is a working build for 700D with reliable 48fps recording?

Thanks!
#24
Danne, this is unreal!  :o
I have been playing with it yesterday and today for a couple of hours... testing high res, high fps and dual iso modes.
This is like dream coming true slowly, Its really blowing my mind what you guys can do with these tiny cameras.
Especially I am blown away by 50fps mode. I set fps to 48fps and horizontal res to 1600px (2.35:1) and it is working superbly. Now and then it skips or freezes on one frame but other than that, it is awesome. I think my card is not fast enough to sustain higher res, cos I am getting somewhere arounf 35MB/s writing speeds with SD hack on. (SanDisk Extreme UHS-3 32GB)

In other modes (1x3 binning - the last one) I am getting a few pink frames.

Anyway.. I am super stoked about this!
Thank you and keep up the awesome work Danne.

Awesome! Didn't know abou that. Thanks Danne. :)
