Title: DNG preview in Mavericks (10.9) Finder
Post by: djfremen on December 30, 2013, 12:20:10 AM
Any way to preview DNG files in finder without reconverting with Adobe's software?

Ideally, using apple's coverflow would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

I'm using Mavericks and I'm not too sure what you mean... as I can preview DNGs from within Finder...

Yeah- I'm using MLV Dump with the recursive.command script and you can't see the preview in Finder.

Excuse my ignorance but isn't it just a header difference between the two formats?

If you have adobe camera raw you can select all and apply "update dng preview" which will make them show as thumbnails in maverick

That,s the dng converter. Isn,t that exporting to new dng;s? I,m referring to acr which is provided with photoshop, adobe bridge and so on which updates preview by baking in a small jpeg into the dng. I think :)

Not working. Have Adobe CC and CS6 installed. ACR doesn't have a generate preview option in Finder.

Last time I checked, the previews in the ML DNG backend were working (well, uncompressed RGB with fixed WB and plain log curve, and I only checked in Linux with geeqie). Can you show some screenshots to see what exactly you mean by "not working"?

Select all dng; s and open them in acr. Select all dng; s within acr and apply update dng previews. Choose medium. Apply.
Or wait and see what Alex got up his sleeve :)

Are these DNG files created with raw2dng? Can you upload one?

In mavericks? I can only get preview in mavericks when updating the previews in acr or converted with rawmagic. Probably a bug, not important to me. I preview within acr anyway.
Thanks

I've been having all kinds of trouble with image previews in 10.9, Apple has really screwed something up, b/c everything was great in 10.8. I submitted a bug report to Apple, no word from them. My issue is mostly about .CR2 previews, it seems the OS just ignores the preview jpg in the file and spends the time to render a preview from the raw, it takes on the order of 2 seconds and locks up the GUI until the preview rendering is finished, which is the really annoying part, I actually wish I could disable previews altogether. If you go to another image and come back it still re-renders a preview which takes another 2 seconds. If all you want to do is open an image in an open file dialog, you have to wait 2 seconds for the preview to render, even if you know the exact image you want to open. IDK about dng previews, but I imagine it's related.

Here's the only checkbox I see in ACR. I would never do this for thousands of DNG files though.

That, s the one.
Agree, updating previews won,t get things done faster in a workflow scenario ;)
I, d suggest going through adobe bridge to watch thumbs.

So if cDNG could be created from MLV Dump it would create thumbs at the same time? Just trying to wrap my head around the issue...

Thanks guys,

There are thumbs already it seems only can, t be read in maverick.
I believe thomas is working on updating his cdng converter rawmagic for mac. That would solve your problem

ML previews are not JPEG, but uncompressed RGB. Maybe OS X only recognizes JPEG previews?

If anyone wants to polish his coding skills, try looking in chdk-dng around create_thumbnail. You'll probably need the libjpeg library.

Interestingly, when I use the new version of mlv dump on a 10.7.5 system, it generates thumbnails but when I bring over other DNG folders from a 10.9 system, no thumbnails are present.
