Title: Another SMF admin appreciate learning about your SMF setup
Post by: l_d_allan on December 02, 2013, 03:26:30 PM
I've got an "under construction" website
www.CanPrint.org
that also uses SMF as the forum engine.

The "point" of CanPrint.org is to help people get proficient with inkjet printing, specifically using Canon printers. It is a non-commercial website, and not ad supported.

I've been impressed by how well ML controls spam. I rarely if ever see inappropriate posts. I was hoping to find out how that is accomplished, and make adjustments as appropriate to my website.

Sorry for the late reply...

We basically have multiple layers of steps a bot has to go through...

- A stupid question in the registration page
- A valid email address
- Stop Spammer SMF plugin
- httpBL
- Akismet Spam filter
- Amazing mods that go through the crap that spammers post and still gets through

Plus there's a an hidden honeypot in the page that sends data to http://www.projecthoneypot.org

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a closer look "after the dust settles" on lots of Christmas to-do's.

I was hoping you didn't have to modify "vanilla" SMF too much to achieve what seems to be a remarkably spam-free forum.

BTW: I decided to put www.canprint.org into "under construction" status because the spam issues were so time-consuming for this rusty, SMF admin newbie.
