Title: Is the new Sony A7R about to disrupt the Canon 5D3 + ML filmmakers space?
Post by: alikapadia on October 19, 2013, 09:03:04 AM
Looking at all the wonderful things ML has been enabling with the 5D3, I was considering buying one myself for filmmaking and music video making purposes. However, I read up on the new Sony A7R releasing soon and it looks pretty impressive. I'm wondering weather that camera is about to change a lot with the DSLR video space. My knowledge is limited so I know I can use some clarity through guidance here. I just didn't want to buy a 5D3, right when a new technology came along that was more flexible for filmmakers.  I would like some expert advice on weather my concerns are valid.

So far I understand that the A7R provides uncompressed video (not RAW) so that's some score in 5D3's favor. On the other hand, the A7R can do 60 fps 1080p video which is very impressive and useful for a filmmaker / music video maker like myself. A further discussion on these and other features and what they mean for the 5D3 + ML space would be greatly appreciated.

I would get mark3 because canon at least has great support for there cameras Sony in other hand just cranks out product after product. What I mean I. Support u have a people with canon DSLR you give them a call and they are happy to help. Hell when I need my camera for a cleanup I just drive to Irvine ca. Drop it off 3 days later pick it up and everything is great.

Sony does just enough to get people who don't know this subject very deeply to buy their cameras.  Don't get me wrong, their cameras are amazing for what they do.  Many filmmakers use Sony cameras as their "vacation" cameras.  Sony doesn't play in the middle ground between consumers and professionals.  Not enough money probably.  Canon has allowed a DIY culture to grow around the firmware hook in their cameras.  Black magic has been the disruptive one in the semi-professional space.  You also have to remember, many people have been shooting indie type stuff with Canon cameras for years.  Tons of equipment, software, techniques, etc., have evolved and are now extended to the 5D3.  No matter how great the A7R might be, it will be limited by lenses, etc.

It would take pages and pages to answer your question.  My short answer is 'No', followed by a laugh :)

I totally agree with maxotics. I will admit I was impressed last week when I saw the announcement of the A7R, mirrorless full frame!? But I have been using canon for a long time, back when I shot film. The community alone is enough of a reason to stay. I have a mkii and I am just now skimming the surface of what can be done. I also agree with what maxotics said about lenses. I have all 70's prime lenses with great glass. I couldn't afford these new expensive lenses but I much prefer the bokeh and look of old lenses. I personally love the way the black magic camera looks but I don't like how small the camera is. I like bigger cameras with weight, and I love the sound of the mirror.

With that said, I am excited to see what Canon puts out next, if anything to rival the new technologies coming out.
