i used the motion detect feature with great success, however, why is it only allowed in liveview ?

I presume it uses the liveview data to make the magic happen.... No LV, and the camera is blind..

Exactly, there is no active computation or anything that would be able to detect changes in the scene.

    thanks for the replies.
next request, while in this mode, could there be an option or submenu  to :
-prevent the camera from sleeping (aside from the main menu-  just for this option to be selected)
-auto-dim the live view (for extended sessions)

i know those things are in the canon and ML as a setting, but imo the motion detect feature could bring it all together in one sub menu,

There are already so many submenus and options in ML in general that it would get out of control if menu items started showing up twice.
