Title: [Already Done] Hyper-Manual mode ala Pentax
Post by: MadManAce on August 24, 2013, 09:46:07 AM
Here is a scenario I come across often, I'm shooting an outdoor wedding, the wedding party are walking down a long aisle, at a far distance I like to shoot at F/2.0, as they get closer I like to stop down to get everyone in focus. With Canons not having 1/1 exposure increments, I lose track of the clicks of both aperture and shutter when shooting in M Mode.

If I switch to aperture priority, I rely on the evaluative metering to get proper exposure, but it does not, I have to adjust exposure compensation, but even then the metering can still miss calculate quite severely because it puts too much emphasis on a bright portion of the clothes that it so happens crossed my AF point. Why does Canon not allow the * AE Lock to lock the EV values in manual mode. When I stop down the aperture 3 clicks, the shutter counters the change to keep the same exposure. Pentax does this "Hyper-Manual" http://neilvn.com/tangents/the-best-camera-in-the-world/

As it is now the * AE Lock button serves no function in M Mode, seems like a wasted opportunity and if someone in the Magic Lantern community can implement this, I would download the software and make a donation. But as it stands, ML is  primarily geared for video.

well I could implement it to autoexpo module

there will be an option to attach camera buttons to specific function (eg. min AV)
and on 5D2 we have rear dial and speed dial and ae lock free in M mode

I forgot to mention that I shot a 5dMK3.  Not sure if it makes a difference.  But I am sure users of MK2 would likely appreciate this.

I keep forgetting to use it myself.

So this feature already exists and it works on M Mode like the Pentax in the Video?

Already exists and works great. Set your exposure as normal, enable exposure lock in the ML menus. As you adjust T or A values the opposite will adjust inversely. You might notice moments when changing one and the other does not adjust. This is because of rounding errors due to Canon apertures being divided into 1/8 stops, not true 1/3 stops.
