Title: 5D2 Spanning Limit?
Post by: gtsofilms on August 24, 2013, 02:06:41 AM
Hi everyone,

Apologies if this is addressed somewhere else, but I did a few searches and didn't find any conclusive answers to this question.  But I noticed I cannot shoot more than 10 spanned files on my 5d2.  I'm using 64GB 1000x Komputerbay CF cards and I notice that even though it says continuous OK @ 1856x1004, the camera stops at around 10 files (1 .RAW and .R00-.R09) I've done this a few times and it seems every time it stops at around that mark.  Just wondering if this is a limitation of the camera or whether there is a way around this.

Thanks so much!

I was able to fill up my 64 gig 1000x card. 15 files in all.

I have not tried it at that resolution. But just to test your system try it at 1728 x 972 16:9.
make sure you have in canon menu autopower off =OFF.
Small hacks=ON

Thanks Ted! I tested the resolution you mentioned and was able to record about 15minutes until the card went full.  Looks like it's a problem with the other resolution I tested, if you get a chance to test that I'd be curious to see how long you're able to record.

Thanks again.

its not continuous at 1856 x 1004, it will only record approx 14,460 frames or 11 spanned files.

Note that when the camera says continuous ok, sometimes it would change when the card gets filled up.

here's a good guide based on my tests you can refer to.

The highest possible res to record is at
1880x1058 16:9 = 1049 approx frames

Highest continuous recording is at
1880 x 940 2:1 = record till your CF card is full (64gig around 15 minutes)

Highest 16:9 continuous recording is at
1728 x 972 = record till your CF card is full (64gig around 15 minutes)

Highest res in crop mode is at
2144 x 1076 = 358 approx frames

near full HD res in crop mode is at
1920 x 1076 = 1223 approx frames

Thanks for this. I was asking myself the same question.
