Title: 1280 x 720 RAW without cropping the image ?
Post by: Tony5diii on August 11, 2013, 06:26:33 PM
Is there a way to record 1280 x 720 raw without cropping the image ?

If there isn't will it be implemented in the future as it would be great to shoot the full image visible in the viewfinder rather than in crop mode.

30 or 60 fps recording the full scene not just the central portion is what I would like to do. In much the same way as when we switch between 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 within the canon software you don't have the Zoom effect. I guess it is technically possible as it would be the reverse process of the current crop mode i.e. using pixels from all over the sensor to reconstruct the 1290 x 720 rather than just using the adjacent pixels from central portion.

If it's not implemented at the moment, hopefully it is something that the magic lantern team will implement.

Is there a request feature thread that I could add this to ?

Tony5diii talking about this:

But i think it's not possible. Could be much more usable without cropping.

I seen a post somewhere that the guy mentioned just blocking out the unused area with some sort of masking on the lcd and using a lcd viewfinder to help concentrate on the frame.

Hi Datadogie, it is more about getting higher frame rates and not using wider lenses than anything else for me.

Technically possible imo, since canon does it.

After being very very excited about raw shooting, this insurmountable problem turns out to be pretty much a deal breaker for me. I have a Canon 5D Mk2 that cannot shoot 1920x1080 and the closest continuous shooting I can get really is 1280x720 (1880 shuts off after a second and the one below after about four). My goto Zeiss 35mm lens thus gets severely cropped and my 50mm really isn't worth using. I have the Canon 17-40, but I really hate using that lens (tis why I bought the Zeiss). I thus cannot shoot HD on this camera or 1280 as full image. It's not really a win situation at all unless you can afford really wide angle lenses to make up for what you lose out on. I feel it's probably better to use higher bit rates for H.264, unless you have such lenses or a Mk3.

Cheers
Tony

Acording to this (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0) the 5D2 can do 1880x940.  Buy a better CF card (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?board=40.0).

1880x940 raw is a truck load better source quality then H.264 (regardless of it's bitrate).

@Tony1uk Get a faster card(1000x +) and you will be able to shoot close to full HD continuous, you will end up having a more anamorphic aspect ratio (2.0 aspect instead of 1.8 for normal HD). Also keep in mind that the 1920x1080 h264 is actually 1880x1072 that is upscaled to 1920x1080 by the camera. The 5D2 is not truely a full HD camera apparently.

Is that 1880x1072 16:9 native in the Mark II? So the plus for ML user is the capability to get our hands on the 1880x1072 RAW and have the ability to output it as ProRes 4444 or format of our choosing, as well a manipulate the images from RAW DNG files and the give us upscaling control? If Canon engineer fills 1880x1072 is suffencaint for a relevant presentation of FullHD, how high is a suitable upscale from 1880x1072 RAW Files?
