For the people having problems to get Eosutility started and getting the camera "camera not recognised" error:
See if it works with a really old version of the eos digital solutions disc. After much trial and error i got the cd that came with the cam and installed this eos utility. The drivers supplied with these old disc seem wo work best with the eos utility we are supposed to use.

What not worked for me:
The downloaded and therefor up to date eos sultion disc on:
Win 7 x64
Windows XP Virtual Machine
Win7 x32

And it works well.
But the red light on my 7d is always blinking even if I do not call ML by pressing the dustbin button.
Is it normal ?

open up ML with the delete button, under the tab with  the wrench symbol, turn of all warnings for bad settings.  ;)

Done. OK.
When I press the delete button, the "normal" Canon menu appears during 1/3 of a second, and then the ML menu appears.
Is it normal ?

Maybe can you add to your istallation guide the following procedure for Mac users ?

Mac users :
- ask for the "firmware.fir" on the forum (maybe a special thread should be created ???)
- copy firmware.fir on your desktop or any other directory on your Mac
- search on the web, download and install Eos Utility 2.8.1 (here for example http://dl.dropbox.com/u/31127109/dontdelete/EOSUtility%202-8-1%20OS%20X%20Lion%20Compatible.zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/31127109/dontdelete/EOSUtility%202-8-1%20OS%20X%20Lion%20Compatible.zip)). If you've got a newer version of Eos Utility you will have to remove it before.
- follow the instruction guide from #7
- after enabling the bootflag, make your CF card bootable using "Macboot" (select "Make DSLR bootable")
- copy the ML files on your CF card.
- it's done

download the following two files:

http://pel.hu/ML/autoexec.bin
http://pel.hu/ML/7D_203.sym  (right klick and save link)

find those two files in the ML folder on your CF card and replace them.

you will find the burst in the "shoot" tab.

good luck

Me neither... exact same results!
EOScard1.3.6 crashes (with some date convert error).
Then I tried with EOScard1.3.5, this let my 7D autoboot ML okay, but there is no Shoot > Silent Shooting option.
I copied the files from magiclantern-7D.203.Alpha2.zip manually to the root of the card. No silent shooting option.

There are three modules on the card in ML/MODULES, but only two are listed in ML after booting (file_man.mo and dual_iso.mo, not 7D_203.sym).

Did that, and now the option is there! Hurray! :-)

Same for me.
7D_203.sym (the last ont downloaded five minutes ago from the link given by Jemabaris) is in the modules directory.
And when I tried to load the modules.... The 7d freezes

I'm so stupid  :-[
I had not understood that the two files (.bin AND .sym) had to be installed on the CF card !

Now the modules can be loaded and the silent picture menu appears in the shoot menu.

Thierry

Due to licencing / legal issues we can distribute the methods to create firmware.fir but we can not distribute the actual firmware.fir file itself.
Now if you happen to find someone who would email you the firmware.fir file through PM, theres nothing I can say about that.

EOSutility download link died, I updated it.

Am updating links to EOScard now, the newer version doesnt seem to work, the older version actually made my SD-CF adapter work (im very happy now)

Pelican updated EOSutility, it should be working now. 1.35 does not pull the latest version of ML to put on the card, 1.36 should. Try the newer version first, if it fails then use the old one.

Am I the only one getting "Out of Memory" errors in EOS Utility?  Is there a fix for that?  Prior to installing 2.8.1 everything worked fine...  Is there a fix for this?  ???

I never had to "install" 2.8, I just ran it.

Try uninstalling EOS utility completely, then install the version that came with your camera (on your CD), then just run the 2.8 version (dont worry about installing it)

If you still get errors which step do you get the out of memory error?

With the new patch you can skip the whole EU part (step 9-12)

I seem to be running into an issue when trying to get my 7D bootflagged with the patched firmware.

I managed to make it up to step 15 step 8 when I got an "Update file error." on my 7D.
I even tried the patch that lets you update directly from the card (bypassing the EOS Utility) and I still get the same issue.

I've "reset/reformatted" these cards several times already (I've only ever run the 7D alpha 2 off of them anyway)
Any idea what I might be doing wrong here?

Apparently, due to the wizardry of Pelican, the process is much more simplified now.

If you downloaded any files before I would suggest you bin them and re-download everything to make sure you have the latest version of the files.

Please try the new steps and let me know how they go. Hopefully no longer needing to run EOSutility will help minamize problems!

just a guess: the reason why for some people this guide is not working might be because their 7d's were manufactured with a newer version of the firmware than 1.2.3 so firmware cant be downgraded. When i bought mine it came with 1.2.1 version. So using the files from pelican should work.

I purchased my 7D back in August of 2011. I'm wondering if this issue is something that can be confirmed.

Well it shouldnt be an issue anymore as the guide has changed and we no longer need to use EOSutility :)

STEPS HAVE BEEN CHANGED! Anyone having issues with EOSutility bin all the files you downloaded before, re-download the supplied files, and try the instructions. Let us know how it goes!

In windows 7 you can hold SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK  on the 'work folder' with your files in and then you can choose to 'open commande window here' which will open the Command dos window (CMD) with the  correct folder open and ready to go - just copy and paste the commands  - bspatch 7d000110.fir 7dbooton.fir booton.bsdiff (right click in command window and choose paste).

can be done in Windows XP with a registry hack too - info on both here (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/232/right-click-to-open-a-command-prompt/)

Hi, I can not figure out if the  followed procedure was successful.
In magic lantern menu I can see the feature  silent picture, but I can not find dual iso  function (how to activate it ? )
Every time I turn off the camera I must manually reload magic lantern.  Is normal that autoboot does not work?
Is the new GUI menu  also in the new firmware? .... I can still see the old menu.

Thanks and sorry if I have so many questions.

If you applied the firmware file properly then that enables the bootflag on the camera. Do you have the magiclantern files on the CF card?  The camera is looking to boot from the CF card but if the files are missing / renamed then nothing will happen. Format the card as per the instructions, then run EOScard and continue the instructions at step 7.

You're not using a CF-to-SD-Card-adapter, I hope ...
Firmware 2.0.3 is the proper version for this ML build. It's running here and elsewhere.

Im no programmer, im just a random guy who wanted to help make a clear guide for people but I will try to help.

You generated the firmware file properly
you prepared your CF card, formatting it as per the instructions (first on computer as NTFS, then on camera)
Place the firmware file on the CF card
Put CF card in camera
Firmware update in camera menu
WHEN CAMERA IS DONE turn off and take out CF card, plug the CF card into your computer
Run EOSutility as per the instructions.

IF that does not work tell us the files on your card, maybe we can spot something there?

was lookinh into the code and see

#Makefile for 7D firmware 203 master digic

ML_SRC_PROFILE=custom

# compile position independent (experimental, not working completely yet)
CONFIG_PIC=n

# magiclantern.lds script MUST be first
# entry.o MUST be second
# menu.o and debug.o must come before the modules
ML_OBJS-y = \
   magiclantern.lds \
   entry.o \
   master_boot.o \
   stubs.o \
   gdb.o \
   ptpbuf.o \
   ml_rpc.o \
   state-object.o
was wondering where i would put

this is the one that's missing?

video_hacks.o \

but can I just paste that into the 7D_203 Master file.
And then compile?

There are LOTS of testers! We all are testers! Anyone who has followed this guide (read over 4000 times last I checked).
How well does it do Raw video? Well Raw video is still one of the most experimental stages. In my third post you will find this which may answer your questions.

Common problems and solutions: (I will add more as I notice them).
IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES READ THIS FIRST!

Advertised / talked about functions are missing!
This includes but is not limited to:
Dual ISO, Raw Video, Silent Pictures, Burst mode, etc.
Since this is a HIGHLY BETA version, some things are disabled.
Additionally, magiclantern is being modulized. There are different modules you can download for different thigns (like HDR, for instance) and as each gets developed or tweaked further they are made available in the development thread (now up to 40 pages, see my first post).
Don't blindly load modules, some are buggy or didnt work properly. Watch the development thread daily to see when updates are being posted.
Read the last 10 pages of the development thread.
You will need to LOAD THE MODULES in MagicLantern to enable them. They are diabled by default.
BEWARE, THESE ARE VERY EXPERIMENTAL AND MAY TURN YOUR CAMERA INTO JELLO. USE WITH CAUTION.
(This is turning into the number one question on this thread, followed by people not following instructions)
Hopefully that answers your question.

I purchased my 7D back in August of 2011. I'm wondering if this issue is something that can be confirmed.

Are you trying to install with a CF card larger then 32GB? I ran into this problem, firmware can only be loaded on a card 32GB or smaller as far as I know. I hope this limitation is remedied!

5D3 users are lucky, they can install ML on the 2nd SD card in their camera and use the large CF card to record. No such luck with our 7Ds! I hoped to use one of the Komputerbay cards, but have tried many different ways, cant get it to work. Works fine on my slow Sandisk though...

Can anyone please send me the .fir file as I am a full-time mac guy and not a pc user. I am a 5d Ml user and need to convert my 7d's for a gig. I would be grateful if someone can send me the file to [email protected]. I look forward to opening my email soon to the .fir

Ok, with that out of the way...
Make sure your camera is updated to the latest version: 2.0.3
Download the following:
7D firmware v1.1.0 http://pel.hu/down/eos7d110.exe (Thanks to Pelican)
booton.bsdiff: http://pel.hu/ML/booton.bsdiff
bspatch.exe: http://download.pokorra.de/coding/bsdiff_win_exe.zip
EOScard 1.38b software http://pel.hu/down/EOScard.exe (Thanks to Pelican!)

Prepare the folder:
1.  Run eos7d110.exe which will extract a file to a specific folder. I made a folder named MagicLantern on my desktop and extracted the file there.
2.  Move booton.bsdiff to that same folder.
3.  Extract bsdiff_win_exe.zip to that same folder
You should now have a folder with 5 files in it: 7d000110.fir, bsdiff.exe, bspatch.exe, license, and booton.bsdiff.

Create the update file
4.  Open command prompt (start - run - cmd, or type cmd in the start search bar, or start - programs - accessories - command prompt)
5.  Use the CD command to change the directory to the folder you put the files in. You can do this by opening the folder you created and copying the address (in the address bar at the top) and right click - paste in the command prompt.
For me this looked like 'C:\Users\Jon> CD C:\Users\Jon\Desktop\MagicLantern'<Enter>
6.  Now type: bspatch 7d000110.fir 7dbooton.fir booton.bsdiff and press enter.
You should now see a file named '7dbooton.fir'. This is your update file, you will need it in a moment.

Prepare your CF card
7.  Make sure you have a freshly formatted card. I like to format the card as NTFS in windows then format the card again in the camera which changes the filesystem.
8.  Run EOScard. Select your CF card from the list.
9.  Check EOS_DEVELOP and BOOTDISK
10.  Right click the ML icon
11.  Select 7d 2.0.3 alpha2 from the ports in progress.
12.  When the download finishes click SAVE at the top. Wait for it to finish writing files to your CF card
13.  Copy the '7dbooton.fir' file you created before to the CF card (don't put it in any folders).

Update your camera
14.  Put your CF card in your camera, set the dial to M, and turn er on.
15.  Open the menu, select the wrench, then firmware update.
16.  After the camera updates check MagicLantern by pressing the trashbin button.
17.  Check autoboot by turning off the camera, turning it on again, and pressing the trashbin button again.

Please note these steps / this method is newly developed. I could not personally test it, please post any results / issues so we can help you fix them! And if it works as advertised let us know as well! Thanks!

Very good/detailed instructions, i followed them as said and have no problems running this.
Just a quick FYI in case it hasn't been said and i haven't seen it anywhere on here. After
the update firmware is done with the 7dbooton.fir, that file doesnt need to be used anymore on any
subsequent CF cards, and you dont need to use the "update firmware" option if you use multiple CF
cards, all you need is the autoexec.bin file in the root directory of your CF card, and the boot flags from
running EOScard on said CF card. And of course the ML
directory and all it contents :-)
Cheers . . . .
K.C.

Yeah, my original guide had you build the firmware, then update, then copy ML to the cards however this way you put everything on the card THEN deal with the camera, i think its easier. And so what if there is an extra firmware update file on the card that people might not really need? Better to make it easy for newbies like myself than complicated. I want the guide so easy even my grandmother could figure it out :)

Additionally, EOScard _should_ pull the latest version of ML... that being said everything is moving so fast its hard to know what the latest updates are.

EOScard.exe v1.39 is an instant crash for me on windows 7 x64

Downloaded the alternative Zip file , extracted content to cf card , followed all the other procedures , updated the firmware on camera

but nothing is happening , pressing the bin button does nothing !

Do you already bootflag your camera??

I think that the file 7dbooton.fir is only for bootflag your camera, use this single file in CF card and upgrade your firmware in camera. After this delet the file and instal the rest of the files in your cf card and i think you are on.

Read this threat good. Wend i have done this is like this i have manage but things chance, reed good this threat.

Hope this help you.

I don't have Windows at all (Linux only).  If it runs under wine (which is really an implementation of Windows), that could work.

Aw yis! first DNG's on After Effects. Looking good. Got about one second burst at 2530x1200 resolution on transcend 400x card. One frame shows a glitch but still a promising start.

I had just a minor issue after installing the 7dbooton.fir. The camera didn't start at all. I removed the battery but still everything remained black until i removed the card. The solution was to replace 7dbooton.fir with regular 7d000203.fir and update to that. The ML menu was still intact anyway. Not sure if it just required to remove the 7dbooton.fir from the card(?)

You only need that to set the bootflag on the camera once. Once its set your good, you can remove the .fir file with no consequence.  I just have the guide written with both the .fir and ML files on the card at the same time to make it easier.

I got EXACTLY that screen when upgrading my 5dm3 to the latest Canon firmware, it was unrecoverable and I ended up sending the body back to Canon where the replaced the logic board at the cost of over $200.  I'm not saying that this is your problem, just that you maybe up a creek without a paddle.

If I were having firmware issues i'd try updating my firmware back to the legit Canon firmware and try again. If I can't do it through the camera i'd do it through EOSutility. If the current EOSutility doesnt work I'd try an older version.

Not much more I can suggest since I don't really know much about this. Hope you get it figured out mate.

Hello!

A little help for mac users:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/prhvvukktwn3wfz/7D.zip

contain:

1. booton.fir - patched firmware which will enable boot flag in your camera
2. bootoff.fir - patched firmware which will disable boot flag
3. 7D000203.FIR - original firmware 2.0.3
4. MacBoot - java application wich help you make your CF card bootable
5. run – shell script to run java app properly.
6. Magic Lantern Pelican's build with all modules and fixes.

Download, unpack.
1. Enable bootflag on your camera, put booton.fir to root of your CF card, insert it in camera and update firmware, extract CF, delete booton.fir
2. Put original 7D000203.FIR to root of your CF card, insert, update, eject, delete 7D000203.FIR
3. Take any CF insert to your ugly macbook (use card reader of course), double-click "run" script, enter your admin (root) password, note that you should have installed Java (download from Oracle if not).
4. In MacBoot interface select size of CF card which you inserted and press Refresh then select "Make DSLR-bootable" and press Prepare Card
5. Copy all folders and files from "To root of CF card" folder to root of you prepared CF card ;)
6. Insert it to you lovely 7D and power on.
7. Press trashcan button, Navigate to "M" menu and load all modules
8. have a nice sex :)

Hey Guys!  :)

so I have a problem with the raw_rec.mo ... :( after loading this module every other modules gives me Err including raw_rec.mo

I followed instructions in this thread step by step at least 20x http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7464.0 (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7464.0)

after that i tried every firmware for Canon 7D since 1.1.0 to 2.0.3 with EOScard 1.38 and 1.40

I put my CF in card reader, formated it to NTFS, then put it in camera formated it again, then put in card reader did all steps in How to instal ML on Canon 7D thread but I still gets Err after loading raw_rec.mo
I thing I'm using this latest raw_rec.mo from Pelican http://www.mediafire.com/download/17wrac41a1oi4bu/raw_rec.mo (http://www.mediafire.com/download/17wrac41a1oi4bu/raw_rec.mo)

after I do all steps in here http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7464.0 (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7464.0)  I download the raw_rec.mo and copy it on the CF card in MODULES folder ... is that right or not? Should i do something else with it?

I do not know what to do now, I'm still going thru all the threads about 7D in here and can't find the answer ... maybe I overlooked something or maybe I'm doing something wrong.  :(    can somebody give me some advice or some link please?

... else all other modules works fine (dual iso, file man, pic view and ettr) thanks for them  ;)

The camera can still power on with ebay batteries, it just throws a warning that it does not detect the battery and asks if you want to use it. Everything works fine except the battery meter and if it dies halfway through something (saving a picture or taking a video) you lose that information.

The camera can still power on with ebay batteries, it just throws a warning that it does not detect the battery and asks if you want to use it. Everything works fine except the battery meter and if it dies halfway through something (saving a picture or taking a video) you lose that information.

Niec to know this Pileot  :D   I bought one jupio (never heard this brand before) and work like a charme.

thanks for the info  8)

Yeah on ebay for like, $8 you can get an un-chipped battery that does not show the % remaining, and for like $12 you can get a chipped one that works like the OEM one. Only thing with these aftermarket batteries is they NEVER have the rated mAh. I got three, all listed as 1400mAh, i tested them at 600, 800, and 1000mAh. Tho for $8 im not complaining.

IIRC, If the camera doesn't recognize the battery it won't let you load firmware.

It's not ML specific, I remember when firmware 2.x came out, there were people who couldn't upgrade because they didn't have a chipped battery.

I suppose it's so that the camera can check to see that you won't run out of battery halfway through.

However, once you've modified the camera to "boot from card" I guess it won't care whether the battery is chipped or not.

Hello guys,

I'm totally new to ML, I'm a 7D user and I've been reading for quite a bit around here. The only doubt (actually i've several ones but i'll figure out myself :P ) I have is if I can get ML installed with the last features ( ...dual iso... ) using a, some way safer, manual-boot version instead of the autoboot one.

The autoboot version is the only one has been "modulized" and so the only one can run dual-iso raw etc... right? hope not ;P

Thank you very much for your patience and help,
regards,
Sandro

I understand we have many people from many countries however it is impossible for me to assist you when you do not use proper english, paragraphs, or sentence structure.

Please re-read the first four posts in this thread.
The first post contains steps to installing ML that have worked for thousands of people.
The second post contains troubleshooting for common issues.
The fourth post (my third post) contains links to updates and where to get further information once ML is installed.

My advice for those having real trouble with english:
1) Use an automated translator like google translate. It's horrible at times but it's accurate in doing so. Add a remark you used this or that translator, please.
2) Add your text in your native language, too. There is a good chance another person here will be able to read it and to help you.

Hi,
just a short question. If i want to get rid of the ML Firmware from my cam. Do i have to rerun the eos firmware again or is there an other way (just to know how this had to be done in case ;))
Title: Re: HOW TO: A guide to installing ML on the 7D with recent features

You don't have ML firmware on your cam because ML doesn't replace Canon's firmware but runs on top of it as task/program like other programs on other computers with their OS. ML is loaded from the card at startup.
The thing you meant may be
a) How to remove the boot flag from the cam (which will do no harm if it stays there)
b) How to get rid of ML which is stored on the card

Answer to a): Download http://pel.hu/ML/bootoff.bsdiff and run the command to create a 7Dnoboot.fir. Use Canon's firmware update dialog to load this "firmware" and boot flag is gone.
Answer to b): Format the card in your card reader and then in the cam. You can also use the Q button from the format dialog to wipe ML from the card.

Ok, first +1 to walter on using google translate AND your native language.  We don't want to discourage our international community from posting, we just want to be able to help you better!

As for the modules. I have listed links to the various threads working on different aspects of MagicLantern. If you read the first four posts you know that ML is very experimental right now on the 7D and things are constantly changing. This makes having a most recent list of modules nearly impossible to maintain as modules can be updated or changed dozens of times a day. Just because it was changed does not mean its better, and sometimes can negitively impact in unintended ways.

As to the video tutorial, I will not be making one. The steps are listed as simply and basically as I can make them. Sometimes the software has been updated causing bugs, usually its updated to give you the latest version of ML. I have backups of working and tested software in case an update breaks something. If you can't follow simple instructions and read the FAQ then a video will not help you.

Since its being asked a few times I will add "how to remove ML" to the FAQ.

Thanks for the continued support by everyone and your help in helping others. This is why were awesome!

I think is just for be able to bootflag. The camera stay with the latest firmware that you have update

Post by: dmk on August 28, 2013, 10:19:55 PM
Ahhhh... thanks for clearing that up, it was kindof confusing to read:

"Make sure your camera is updated to the latest version: 2.0.3" ... "Download the following: 7D firmware v1.1.0"

I think there's an advantage to making us newcomers figure it out. By breaking our teeth and reading through the various forums, we get a better overall understanding before we can jump in :)

However, since this thread is really meant to help people get up and running as easily as possible... can I make a couple suggestions to clarify the sticky post Pileot? If I've got the details wrong, please correct. What I mean to say is to keep the bullet list (which is very clear- thanks for doing that!) but maybe add some headers and footers for more explanation.

For example:

---------------------
Step 1) Prepare bootflag override*

1a) Prepare the folder ....
1b) Create the update file ...

Step 2) Prepare the ML code to run**

2a) Prepare your CF card ...
2b) Update your camera ...

* This enables ML to run and is achieved by reading some code from old firmware. It will not overwrite your new firmware, it only changes a specific generic setting which applies to all firmware.

** This uses EOSCard to load your chosen build of Magic Lantern. Since development is ongoing, there are various ports available. Follow Pelican's post to see what features are in various bundles - newest includes BrunoNicko's fix to LiveView during RAW recording

---------------------

Anyway, if I put the pieces of the puzzle together right, all this might seem obvious to anyone who's been here for a while. But for people just getting our feet wet, explanation is helpful :)

Indeed, i also think that bootflag should be more easy to manage. Maybe if 1% enter in the 7D league he can manage something more simple. Also this is the begging of a new era for the 7D. I think we don't have a developer since one year...

Let wait and see what going to happen...

Nothing.
He means the credits goes to Trammel for making the original bsdiff file which turns on the bootdisk flag and dumps the ROM.
I've only modified that to 2.0.3 because lot of people had problem with updating the firmware with an older version fw file.
I've also made the bootoff.bsdiff from the same original bsdiff.
And I can do all of these because Indy reversed the Canon firmware update file and shared his findings...

So please put Trammel and Indy to the credits...

In terms of understanding what's going on though, it's confusing- why the need for old firmware (as it says in the tutorial) and why the need to upgrade to new before installing the old? Seems strange is all... just curious

Please read the related topics and you will find lot of information and you will understand these steps.
As many people write it before: this booton stuff is NOT a real firmware update file and it does NOT update your camera's firmware but set the bootdisk flag instead of it.

This old firmware is just for bootflag the 7D for be able to read the ML files. In reality your camera still operate with the newest firmware that you have put there. Is just a way they found to make bootflag your camera.

I think I might have bricked my camera.

I followed the instruction in the first post to a T. But when I came to this:
14.  Put your CF card in your camera, set the dial to M, and turn er on.
15.  Open the menu, select the wrench, then firmware update.
16.  After the camera updates check MagicLantern by pressing the trashbin button.

The camera shuts down and I could not turn it back On. In fact, it stops at checking for firmware update, then shuts down.

What can I do now? How do I revert all that? :(

Please help.

Put your card into a cardreader, format it there with NTFS or ExFAT, remove it, insert it into cam. After startup (which should be normal) the camera will report an unreadable card. Format the card inside the cam. Restart and you are back to starting point.
Follow instructions again.

eosCard seems to be the only way to make a cf card bootable.

Yup really sucks you can't deal with everything just by plugging the camera in and using the cam as a card reader but thats Canon for ya. My local computer store had card readers for less than $10.

Some higher quality card readers can transfer faster (USB 3.0) so if you intend to use it to transfer lots of pictures or video it might be faster than through the cam.  /2 cents

Just wanted to add my voice to the conversation and my thanks to Pileot.

I followed the instructions to the letter and, of course, installation went smooth.  Latest version of EOScard worked no problems. I've tried out all the features that I currently use with the non-bootable version and a few others I can think of and, so far (touch wood), everything is working perfectly as intended.

As far as people not getting the installation right, is concerned, I am definitely no programmer but, the instructions are so easy to follow, if you just take the time to read them, you really can't go wrong.

Once again, thanks to Pileot for puttng the guide together, Pelican for the software, and to everyone else involved.

The automatic reload works on my 7D. However, with the latest features, some previous features from the 7D alpha2 are missing, like controlling the GOP, flash, shutter speed etc. Is there a way to have auto reload to the original 7D alpha2?

P.S.,
Possibly the 7D alpha2 plus ettr and/or dual ISO, but not with raw.

download the following two files:

http://pel.hu/ML/autoexec.bin
http://pel.hu/ML/7D_203.sym  (right klick and save link)

find those two files in the ML folder on your CF card and replace them.

you will find the burst in the "shoot" tab.

After boot-flagging my camera, is it possible (and is it safe) to use on CF card the autoexec.bin created by the procedure on the first post in this thread, while putting different files on the ML folder in the FC card, like the original 7D beta2 ML folder?

Note those are from Aug 3. There are much newer files if you follow the links and read up on the development threads. My general rule of thumb: read the last three pages. Any recent developments / releases will be in those last three pages.

It looks like Pelican is working on updating the ML that EOScard uses (searching for the most stable version with the most features). Knowing him it should be ready very soon!

Now, after I updated my 7D witch patched .fir, the led turned RED, stayed for about 15s, then the camera looked as if it was completely off.
Waited couple of minutes - nothing. Turned it to off position, then back to ON, nothing happens.

As if the battery was dead. Completly no reaction...
Is there anything I can do????

You probably failed to make your card bootable.  This might help you.  BTW I have never used the download link on EOS card, it is a new feature.

When you use EOScard make sure that:
1. You have the necesary files in the SD card: *.fir file (only if you need to set the bootflag on that camera; this process to be done only once), autoexec.bin file, plus the ML directory.
2. The Utility recognizes the card by identifiying it in the box next to Refresh.
3. You select the EOS_DEVELOP  check box
4. You select the BOOTDISK check box
5. Under Content, make sure EOScard recognizes: DCIM folder, autoexec.bin file, ML folder, and if required (to enable the boot flag on camera) the fir file.  When EOScard recognizes all of those files it should give you a check mark or something like that.
6. Press the Save button.
7. Look on the bottom of EOScard and should give you a confirmation that the card was written, ie. write successful.

I recently read about another situations with the newer EOScard utility in which the automatic function brought the files to the SD via internet connection.  I am not familiar with this function but Pelican seems to more about it since he created EOScard utility.  Anyway the issue was that EOScard utility had downloaded some files plus there were already some files in the card, the user noticed that in the fir file area it showed like 2 files so the user had to select the correct fir file for the EOScard utility to properly prepare the card! One of the files was for Mac and the other was for windows.

Also on most cameras, except 5D3, if you enable the camera bootflag via firmware update, and then do it again you will be disabling the bootflag. In the 5D3 you cannot disable the camera bootfalg.  It is and ON-OFF process, so if you have a camera working and set the camera flag using the *.fir file you will be disabling the flag in the camera and ML wont start.

So remember to make a card bootable use EOScard utility, and to set the camera flag use *.fir file and do the firmware update.

Help! After many months of successfully using the non autoboot version of Magic Lantern for my 7D, I decided to take the plunge for shooting RAW.

I'm sad to report that after I went into the wrench symbol and updated the firmware, the camera shut itself off, and now won't turn on. Tried other batteries; tried my wall adapter, and nothing I do will even turn it back on :(

Is there any hope I can recover from this? Any ideas? Magic wands?

Thanks

Remove the CF card and battery.

Re-insert the battery and close the card door (NO card in the camera)

Does it boot?

If so, the card is corrupt but the bootflag is set.  That is, the files that have to be on the card aren't but the camera is being told to look for the card files.

Either (1) reformat the card (in which case it will boot without loading ML) or (2) fix the card so it has the correct files on it.

Thanks for the suggestions. What finally did it, and not even taking the battery out and back in worked, was to switch to CA mode instead of M, and that turned the camera on.

I also pulled the lens off, in the mix, so I'm not sure if that had any effect in reviving it, but at least I'm back in business.

I'd been playing it safe without the autoboot. Guess I'll just wait until there's a .FIR version of RAW working.

Is that even feasible? I know at the moment no such option seems to exist.

Thanks,

HELP :)

i just tried to remome ML from my Cam (I know it is not needed, but i would like to test something).

I followed the description, but it seems not to work.
The thing i changed insiede the description is that i changed bspatch 7d000110.fir 7dbooton.fir booton.bsdiff into bspatch 7d000110.fir 7dbootoff.fir bootoff.bsdiff
then i put these file on the ML formated card and put this inside my cam.
When i now go inside my cam (started with M) and go to Firmware update (at the moment it says: Firmware-Vers. 2.0.3-ml-v2.3.NEXT) i get the message: Firmware of Card is alter then Version 2.0.0. Remove old version and update with a new version.

What did i do wrong? Can you please help me?

Thank you
Regards
André

It means you didn't alter the 1.1.0 fw with the patch or you copied the wrong fir to the card...

i am shure i copied the right file :)
so i thing i will be the second option. But i am not shure what exactly you mean with alter 1.1.0 fw? i used the same version that i used for installing the firmware to my cam???

I did it several times and it worked every time for me, so just follow the instructions exactly.
Check the fir file and be sure if not the same as the 1.1.0 and then try the fw update again on your camera.
Make sure you copy ONLY ONE .fir file to your card.

Hi Pelican,

thanks for the help. Today i did it again slowly step by step and it seems like working.

Maybe someone can help me with some other small issue. When i now go to my normal menu i alway have there some informations in blue printed like 29,7GB or the time and some more. It seems that it is from ML but i dont know how to turn it off for the normal menu. Thanks :)

Yeah, its a bug with the current version. If you need to start the cam without ML hold set as you turn the power on. Set the settings you need, turn the cam off, then turn it on again.

Really not a huge problem as you rarely need to change those settings... Once you get them set your good.

VERY GOOD NEWS!!!  I just shot my very first RAW video today, and it worked great. I shot 1152x648 on my Canon 7D and using my 400x Transcend 16GB CF card.

As soon as I have some spare cash, I'm going to get my grubby hands on a 1000x Komputerbay card. I hear those are decent enough, and have the best price.

I ran into an issue whereby I ran raw2dng, but the resulting .DNG files are 576x324 (half the size). Raw2dng does recognize the frame size, but outputs only half... need to read up on it and figure out why!

But, at least I didn't brick the camera and I'm shooting RAW :)

Thanks everybody!

Hi all

Loving the bootloading version after using alpha 1 and 2 from the cards for a while!

Just a couple of questions that I can't see answered anywhere:

1)
After creating the CF card with the instructions given and loading onto my camera I presume I need to do the same with my other cards, yes?
Or can I just copy files and folders from one to another?
And when I have my settings saved and working as I like them on the first card how do I copy these across to the subsequent ones?
Just guessing but do I just copy the "settings" folder?

2)
I've been trying out the new builds and just copying the whole ML folder to my already bootable CF card - do I need to do this or can I just copy specific files and folders across?
Obviously I am changing the settings by doing this so they revert to default.
Again, would I just need to copy across the modules folder or do I need more to benefit from the latest build?

Many thanks for all this!
Cheers!

If you follow the guide that is all you need to do aside from play with settings in your camera and have some fun!

As to copying new updated versions of ML to the cards, as long as the card is bootable you should be able to just copy paste the files no problem. Just remember that these builds are pretty experimental and use at your own risk.  Not every "update" is "better".  A lot of them are "hey lets try this and see what happens"

Thanks Pileot!

I have just cleared all my cards from filming last Friday and was using just one to check the new build with - I won't need it seriously until January so plenty of time to play around with new features.

My query was that after making all the cards bootable using EOScard do I

1) still need to copy the 7dbooton.fir file onto all other cards?

2) do I need to replace the 7D_203.fir and autoexec files that EOScard created with those from the nightly build or do I just need to replace the ML folder?

3) if I am replacing the ML folder are there only certain folders within it that need replacing?

I guess it may just be the modules folder? - Is this correct?

Or are there others that would need replacing too?
I ask this because after setting up my settings on one card I'd really like to copy my settings across to the other cards. I'm presuming this is only dependent on the settings folder? - Is this correct?

4) ...and finally,  after fiddlling with various aspects of the new build I'm finding some new files in the card's root directory - namely "ASSERT00, ROM0, ROM1, VRAM0.422, VRAM0" - are these important files to copy across to other cards to maintain settings or just temp/scratch files of some sort?

I'm hoping I'm not revisiting too many already answered questions here - if so I apologise as I have read through a LOT of pages of all the related threads.

Perhaps I should move this to a new thread entitled something like "Copying settings between CF cards"?

Many thanks for all your help and this excellent project!

Cheers!

The firmware file is to make the camera bootable, once your camera has the booton patch applied its good to go, no need to copy the firmware to every card.

Once your CARD is also bootable you can copy / paste new ML folders to the card and replace the old one.  Generally, I don't worry too much about having the "latest version" because as previously stated just because there is a newer version does not mean that its "better", sometimes it takes several tries before a new version becomes stable enough to use as a daily driver.

So on your card you need:
The autoexe file
The magiclantern folders / files
Pictures of awesome stuff!

Hopefully that answers your questions.

something went wrong during the installation....try to do that again from the beginning...I had the same problem, I did drag and drop the ML files from the new release, but I had in to the same folder the files twice....so, this screen means that some of your ML files are double into the folders or something like that....be care during the installation...for me, by doing it to all my cards, helped me to understand the procedure and fine tune my camera...
give it a second try!

Thanks again (late I know but better than never!) Pileot for the advice!

Maybe being stupid here but I haven't had time to tinker for a while, and turns out I didn't bookmark the 7D nightly build module page - can anyone point me that way please?

Also, been doing some fiddling with the Dual exposure module and getting some great results - but admittedly only after a week of reinstalling PS on 2 machines as I thought there was something wrong with it's handling of CR2s - of course I just hadn't converted from the DUAL to DNG format - Doh!

So question #2 is - where can I read up on the ETTR module?
I see it referenced (especially re the DUAL module - which is my main reason for wanting to try it) but can't find any documentation in the FAQ, User Guide or via searching the forum.

Anyone got a link to a description of the basic setup and use of this module please?

Many thanks again!

Cheers!

STARTING UP
Make sure your camera is updated to the latest version: 2.0.3
Download the following:
7D firmware v1.1.0 http://pel.hu/down/eos7d110.exe (Thanks to Pelican)
(This is a firmware hack, it will not downgrade your camera)
booton.bsdiff: http://pel.hu/ML/booton.bsdiff
bspatch.exe: http://download.pokorra.de/coding/bsdiff_win_exe.zip
Latest version of EOScard http://pel.hu/down/EOScard.exe (Thanks to Pelican!)
(If EOScard fails, try v1.38 backed up here http://goo.gl/JX0BFS)

Are there any mirrors for the http://pel.hu downloads? (eos7d110.exe, booton.bsdiff and EOScard.exe) Those downloads don't work for me. Obviously they are offline :(

EOScard is used to make the card bootable.  That is the main function so if you put the ML files on the card and the make the card bootable that is all you need.  I think the newer versions of EOScard will get the ML files for you but if they are not available you can get the (tragic-lantern) files for 7D here:

http://tl.bot-fly.com/

And the official ML files here:

The problem I'm having with EOSCard is that it says it's downloading "ML_britom_1_29_Sep_2013.zip" but then just hangs.
Did you mean I can just ignore this function and just check the EOS_DEVELOP and BOOTDISK boxes and click save to make the card bootable?
Thanks.

Kind of answering myself here as  having my chosen build on the card already allows EOSCard to make the card bootable and all good!

Well, nearly........

During the break I decided to splice my usb Canon mini cable with a female 3.5mm jack to allow for headphone monitoring.

The latest build here:
http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/

seems to have all audio menus disabled,
so I reverted to an earlier build where the options were available,
but.....

When I plug in the mini usb the screen goes blank, no matter what settings I change in the audio menu.

From trying to find an answer I see that One Percent has posted over on:
https://bitbucket.org/OtherOnePercent/tragic-lantern-6d/commits/all

re: "7D audio seems mostly working."
and more recently:
"Solved 7D muting external audio. It was the wind filters.. now meters on all the time without filter_rec knock on wood"

I'm presuming these are builds in progress, but how can I try them?
I can't see any downloads related to the specific entries.

Sorry if I'm being a bit dim here.

Could someone please explain how I can try these?

Many thanks all!

Ha!
Just noticed:
http://tl.bot-fly.com
is back up so got today's from there.

Headphone monitoring on the 7D :-)

One slight bug - and I know this probably isn't the place for it but thought I may as well add it to this post -

When switching on with the mini usb plugged in the screen is blank.
The only way I have managed to get round this is by unplugging it so the screen comes back on then bringing up the ML audio menu and toggling Headphone Monitoring off and then on again, then replugging the mini usb.

Otherwise seems to work great!

Cheers!

Yes! Good and bad news ...
Bad news: Most recent version is 1.40 and pel.hu is down. Most of the time at least.
Good news: Doesn't matter. Download latest nightly, expand to disk, copy on card, run EOScard and make sure first and second boxes are marked. Don't need to click on ML icon. Use "Save", copy contents of nightly zip on card (just to make sure) and boot up cam.

Ciao

You have to load modules to make Dual_ISO, RAW video (and some other cool stuff) run.
Good night and sweet dreams!

This option worked for me, Thanks Walter.
I Quickly enabled RAW module and shot a 10sec video which i approx 1GB,  tried transfering the RAW file to PC, My CF card is very much slow, read speed is 1MBPs, can any one suggest, how can we increase?

I'm using Transcent Extreme - 8GB 60MBPS UDMA CF card.

I suppose your cardreader is just junk. Purchase a decent USB 3.0 cardreader. If your desktop computer doesn't have an USB 3.0 interface you want to get an USB 3.0 interface card.
I use Kingston FCR-HS3. Heard about troubles with very, very fast cards but your Transcend will work just fine.

I've been using the RAW record on 7D now for a while but I came to film something recently and I just couldn't get it to work. At first it would only record 25-48 frames and then after a few tries it recorded longer, but now I can't get it to record more than 35 frames. I've tried reinstalling ML and formatted the card, but I'm still getting the same issue. Any Ideas?

ok I have possibly solved my own problem. I had my camera setup to shoot raw +Jpeg in photo mode when I changed this to just Jpeg I'm not longer getting an issue

I have got everything up & running & am able to record and ingest footage.

For some reason my footage comes out extremely dark & has like a sensor malfunction where it records weird.

pictures below are at 24P & 60P @ 1728 x 694
I can't seem to find any other users reporting this.

Installed the most up-to-date nightly build on October 15th, 2013 and since then my battery on my 7D has been draining dead overnight....this has been insanely annoying but I'm just now getting around to finding out whats going on.
any suggestions for which magic lantern version I should try for 'normal' battery life?
Is there a way to only boot magic lantern from the update option when I want to use and not have it auto-boot everytime I use it?

Total ML noob, so I'd truly appreciate any suggestions.

Here is a portion of my notes on this, I believe I copy pasted one of the dev's responses on this topic.

If the card stays in the camera after shutdown, there shouldn't be any problems; but if you remove it while the camera is off, and put it back without turning it on, you may have surprises.

You should turn on camera after a card removal, because that's when it's locking up.

or To understand it better: when you open the card door and power switch is off, the camera wakes up for 2-3 seconds.

...AFTER TRANSFER OF RAW MOVIES (or any files) VIA CF CARD READER IT IS ADVISABLE TO TURN ON THE CAMERA AFTER ML CARD IS INSERTED THEN OFF BEFORE STOWING AWAY YOUR CAMERA.

Does anyone know where I can download Canon 7D Firmware 2.0.3? I have 2.0.5 on my 7D and would like to install ML. I have ML on my 60D and would like to use the RAW video in the 7D.

Thanks.

Hi To everyone..
I installed this morning the last ML for the Canon 7D.
But I have a problem.
I turn on the camera the first time and the ML works perfect.  But then I turn off the camera... and some minutes later I turn On again, but the camera doesn't turn on.
I've just take out the battery and then put in again, and the camera works.
Is this normal?
Or is better to uninstall the ML right now..
Please help!
:-X

This booton.bsdiff file is without a file extension, so some browsers may not want to download it natively (firefox) - switch to Chrome to grab this if you have this issue.
