Title: Canon 5d mark III raw mod limitations for feature film
Post by: thonik on July 23, 2013, 01:23:38 PM
Hi all!
I plan to shoot a low budjet feature film on 5d mark III raw mod and i have some questions considering its limitations:
1) Which is the current limitation on recording time i read that after the file size reach 4gb it stops (how many seconds is this)
2) Can i playback inside the camera?Or i have to transfer the files to see what i shoot?
3) Can i have a monitor for the director?

if the limitation of recording time exceeds the needs of a scene i am thinking shooting these scenes non raw or rent a black magic cinema camera for these scenes. whats your opinion?

Thanks in advance!congratulations for the ML team really appreciate your efforts!

You should really read the forum before posting.

Limit is on card size - 64GB = 12mins
Monitor - Yes

Make sure to format your CF card in ExFat.
A clapboard is a must for audio syncing since 5d III raw will not record sound.
Raw frame screen is off when viewing through HDMI. Choose grey preview option and it will remove raw frame bars.
You can play clips back inside the camera, but I wouldn't recommend it. Do it if you must.

In-Camera playback is slow and you cannot get out of it in the middle of playback. Also, I am not 100% sure whether you can play them back when hdmi monitor is attached.

Many people have been testing and using this custom firmware for months now.  All of the information you're looking for can be found on the forum, and it anything isn't clear... EOSHD.com sells a $20 guide to shooting raw with Magic Lantern.

you CAN stop raw playback. Simply, push the shutter button half way down.
