Title: So anyone upgrade their machine to process raw video yet?
Post by: Shield on June 12, 2013, 02:13:12 AM
I'm thinking about it.  I have an i7 920 overclocked to about 3.56 GHz w/12 GB of ram.  I realize most other things wouldn't show improvement, but I'd like to think the AE rendering time would vastly improve.

And then there's nights like tonight where I'm not rendering or working on any raw stuff, and my machine sits idle.

Anyone done any research on the most "bang for your buck" rendering machines?  Is it Hexa-core?  Dual Xeons?

My rendering is pretty fast.. but I think I'll have to buy some more drives.

Intel's newer processors will idle down really well and consume a watt or 2 at most.
Having a really efficient power supply is important for reducing running costs.
SSD's for the OS and letting HDD's power off with no use.

I'm happy with the sandybridge setup I have.  But it's looks like Haswell gives around 20% improvement (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1631325#post1631325), which is tempting.
I should just double the 16GB of RAM I have though, for those massive panoramas and Brenizer shots.

I'm on an Ivy Bridge system. Nothing too fancy but just added a new 2tb drive for ingesting footage and an SSD for caching. Huge improvement in performance in AE but the wife isn't too happy with me spending more money  ::)

My Hackintosh is kicking ass with raw processing.

Specs :
Sandy Bridge-E  6-core 3930K
Sabertooth X79
32GB 1600mhz RAM
GTX 580 3GB
OSX 10.8.4

I put all my footage on a 4TB external G-RAID hooked up through e-sata.  It's really fast.
