I used ETTR with wildlife photography and it produces excellent results. I am in love with ETTR always On feature!
I see a need to change the slowest shutter speed as I switch from one situation to another. For example a hummingbird at 1/1000 or shooting a flower at 1/60.
Since the only shutter setting in ETTR is the lowest shutter speed, can this be tied to the shutter speed adjustment wheel? This will make in my situation a much faster adjustment than going into the menu ...

+1000 - I also really miss using the wheel instead of the menu for ml auto iso - these are really great features, but I also find the delay when changing the setting makes it not practical for dynamic and wildlife scenes.
So general request:
Add ability to change ettr min shutter speed (m mode), min shutter (av auto iso) and aperture (tv auto iso) with the wheel! Of course this wold also need some kind of visual feedback to see what you've set, at least directly jump into the menu to the changed item.

This is tricky because scrollwheel can't be intercepted yet. The easiest way is to let ETTR change ISO only, but then it will get out of range very quickly. So... how I should handle this scenario?
- say you have 1/60 iso 200
- you dial 1/30 => you get iso 100 (fine)
- you dial or 1/125 => you get iso 400 (fine)
- you get out in bright sunlight => ettr sets 1/1000 iso 100 (fine)
- now we have a problem: what should happen when you get back in shadow?
a) ML should do 1/1000 at some huge ISO
b) ML should do 1/125 iso 400
You will probably answer b.
Back at the sunlight step: what should happen when you dial shutter from 1/1000 to 1/500?
a) ML sets slowest shutter to 1/500, current shutter becomes 1/500
b) slowest shutter remains 1/125, current shutter becomes 1/500
c) slowest shutter becomes 1/60, current shutter becomes 1/500
d) slowest shutter becomes 1/60, shutter gets reverted to 1/1000
(First i want to clarify that I only use ETTR in Always on mode. I take at least two pictures and look a the results.)
If ETTR changes the shutter speed, then that is ok, but this does not become the Slowest Shutter speed.
Only when I move the dial ML should change the Slowest Shutter speed. If I don't touch the wheel the shutter moves freely above the slowest shutter say it goes to 2000.
Now I want to change it, so I look at the speed, currently at 2000, and move the wheel to 1/100. ML sets Slow shutter = 1/100 and on the next shot it decides if needs to go up or change ISO.
The shutter speed indicator is not always indicating the slowest shutter speed unless I move the wheel to a new setting, in which case the slowest shutter speed is changed.
So this would require to know when the wheel is being moved to take the action. If there is no way to know the differences of shutter speed changes via wheel or via ETTR then it will be difficult to implement.
Maybe a change in shutter speed followed by Set.

Great idea, just tried it & works as expected!
Could you now also link the max ettr iso to the Canon max iso? Proper exposure is great, but it defeats the purpose if the resulting iso is so high the color rendition and dynamic range are dead in the water... I'd rather underexpose some even after running auto ettr.

(I'm not 100% sure of the behavior on other cameras - but if you change shutter in 1/3 steps, the histogram should change accordingly; it didn't do that in 5D3 photo LV because of expsim).

Do you use live view for these shots (with manual focus?) or shooting mode and flip the mirror up for every ettr measurement?

Nope, I use autofocus. My secret setup allows for f/11 focus.. here: http://10000birds.com/bird-photography-equipment-teleconverters-for-7d-and-5d-miii.htm
On the 5D3 you can set up your focusing points to the left or the right group of 20 points. These points are more sensitive to contrast and the camera can autofocus at f/11 with out the new Canon Firmware. Focusing is a little slower so I manual assist the focusing and press the shutter button to lock the focusing. I can even do bird flight photography at f/11. Of course f/8 is even faster.. 8)
From the reading, I'm getting that this only works in live view. Am I correct on this?
No. In photo mode you have to take 1 or 2 test pictures though.
