This is quite possibly the most stupid idea I've had but maybe it's possible to zoom the sensor image out before it's recorded (i.e. so there is a thick black border around the image). This would enable to crop box to capture the full or nearly full image rather than the zoomed one. I know it's likely impossible but just throwing the idea out there :)
