Welcome to the world of RAW recording with Magic Lantern.

Installing ML can be summarized in three steps, keep this in mind in case you are getting lost in the process!

1. You need to set the bootflag in your camera.  Only for 5D3 this cannot be undone so read here:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7125.0

2. You need to make your SD card (or CF for some cameras) bootable with EOScard

3. Only then you can use the nightly builds.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick Setup Guide for 5D3

Here is a simplified procedure that works.

1. Format card on PC (must use card reader) and then format on Camera.
2. Put card back on card reader (PC) and copy the fir file to the card root directory.  Get it here: http://a1ex.magiclantern.fm/bleeding-edge/5D3/5D3-113-bootflag.fir
3. Put card back on Camera and go to the Firmaware update section (Canon Menu) do an update with the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir  Make sure you have a full battery, a dead battery during firmware update could be a disaster.
4. Once the firmware update is finished you have set the bootflag on your camera.
5. Put card back on the card reader
6. Use EOScard to make the card bootable, which is the main reason to use EOScard.exe
get it here: http://pel.hu/eoscard/  or  http://pel.bencemate.com/eoscard/
7. Make sure EOS Develop box is selected, Bootdisk box is selected and simply click on Save.  If all goes well the card will be made bootable and a "write sucessfull" message will appear on the bottom of EOScard.
8. EOScard sometimes fails to get the latest ML files so go to http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/
and get the latest ML files.  If EOScard put some files in my card I would erase them and replace them with the latest compiles.

I only use EOScard to make my card bootable and use it only when I do a PC format of my card (almost never).  To stay up to date with the latest builds just go to  http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/  and get the latest files.  Make sure you replace all of the existing files in your card so I always delete the existing files before I put the new ones.  Do not mix new files with old ML files.  Always replace the complete set, except for some modules that can be added separately.

Remember that if you format your card on the PC then the card has to be run through EOScard to make it bootable.

The EOScard added function of downloading the latest compile is a perk but apparently it does not always work and sometimes you end up putting the wrong ML files in your card.  In this case make sure you delete those files and get the latest.

For the latest raw video capabilities of all supported cameras go here:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0

The best suited cameras for RAW are the ones that have CF cards which are faster then SD cards.  Other cameras with SD can also work but the RAW video is limited to lower frame size since the SD controller can only transfer at something like  30 to 40 MB/s depending on model.

5D3 is best and working very good.  Continuous recording at 1920x1080 up to 29.97 fps  (Bootflag cannot be undone, this increases wake up time from 0.2 to 2 sec)
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7125.0
5D2 work in progress, continuous recording at 1880x940 at 24p or 1600x900 at 29.97 fps
7D work in progress, continuous 1728x972 24p.
6D work in progress, continuous recording at1840x460 at 24 fps
60D work in progress, continuous recording at 1584x1058 at 24fps
50D work in progress, continuous recording at 1584x1058 at 24fps
700D (T5i) work in progress, continuous recording 1280x720 24 fps.
650D (T4i) work in progress, continuous recording 1280x720 24 fps.
600D (T3i) work in progress, continuous recording 950x540 24 fps.
500D (T2i) work in progress, continuous recording 950x540? 24 fps.
550 & 550D work in progress, continuous recording 950x540 24 fps.
EOSM making progress 1280x720 at 24 fps.

Note: ... and audio recording with RAW video is not available yet.

There are two types of installs, one for ML proven cameras and the other for new cameras.

Install for ML proven cameras:

These are: 550D (T1i), 60D, 600D (T3i), 50D, 500D (T2i) , 5D2, and 1100D.

-------------------------------------

FINALLY INSTALLATION OF RAW VIDEO

OK!  Now you should be familiar with ML for your camera and what you can do.  If you are one of the lucky owners of the DSLR that can do RAW Video then continue...

Now that you have Magic Lantern installed and running on your camera, you are then ready to install RAW video.  The development team are continually making changes to the software and these changes compiled into builds which you can use to update your camera.

By now you know there is an autoexec.bin file in your card.  This file contains all the instruction on how your camera will behave and each new build will include all of those changes in this autoexec.bin file.

So updating your camera software, in most cases, will require that you obtain the new autoexec.bin file to replace the old one.  In the case of the RAW video there are some additional files required, these files are inside the Modules directory.

Here is a directory structure in a typical ML install:

Root Directory:

DCIM (Canon DIR)
MiSC (Canon DIR)
ML (DIR)
autoexec.bin
xxx-bootflag.fir

Please note that the xxx-bootflag.fir  only needed to set the bootflag on the camera.  After this time this fir file can be deleted.

The first two are directories for Canon files.

ML is the main directory for Magic Lantern and inside this directory there is typically up to the following directories:

cropmks (DIR)
data (DIR)
doc (DIR)
LOGS (DIR)
MODULES (DIR)
scripts (DIR)
SETTINGS (DIR)

So the other update is inside MODULES where you will find the following files:

magic.sym
raw_rec.mo

SUMMARY:
1. Obtain new files for: autoexec.bin, magic.sym, raw_rec.mo
2. Replace the old files in the card.  That is all!!
3. Usually it is a good idea to delete the MAGIC.CFG file which is in the SETTINGS directory to start saving new configuration settings which may apply to the new (updated) changes.

SPECIAL CASES:
On the newer cameras there are new files that are uses instead or in addition to the autoexec.bin files.

5D3 If you installed the Alpha 3 + DevKit you will also have this special file which will need to be downloaded:
5D3-113-bootflag.fir  This file will set the boot flag when the camera boots from the card containing the file.

This flag cannot be undone yet so may want to read here first:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5810.msg42407#msg42407

This file is found at the bottom of the instructions where it says FOR DEVELOPERS ONLY  here :

Download ML for 5D Mark III - Alpha 3.
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2602.0

Put camera in M mode

Put the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir flag on the root directory (SD card) and let your camera boot.  Wait until the update is finished.

Now make your card bootable

Use EOS card 1.2 to make your card bootable.

Go to: http://wiki.magiclantern.fm/install

Scroll to:

Installing Magic Lantern on other cards

Download EOScard from the link and make your card bootable.  You have to install EOScard and select the card that you want to make bootable.

Now  put all of the ML required files, your cam will boot with ML installed!

If you downloaded  ML for 5D Mark III - Alpha 3, you should have most of the standard files needed to make up the ML directory structure.  To this structure you need to add all the newest RAW files as previously noted.  You will find a link to the newest files below..

Special note on to use EOScard Utility:

This is the way to set the flag on the card:

When you use EOScard make sure that:
1. You have the necesary files in the SD card: *.fir file (only if you need to set the bootflag on that camera; this process to be done only once), autoexec.bin file, plus the ML directory.
2. The Utility recognizes the card by identifiying it in the box next to Refresh.
3. You select the EOS_DEVELOP  check box
4. You select the BOOTDISK check box
5. Under Content, make sure EOScard recognizes: DCIM folder, autoexec.bin file, ML folder, and if required (to enable the boot flag on camera) the fir file.  When EOScard recognizes all of those files it should give you a check mark or something like that.
6. Press the Save button.
7. Look on the bottom of EOScard and should give you a confirmation that the card was written, ie. write successful.

I recently read about another situations with the newer EOScard utility in which the automatic function brought the files to the SD via internet connection.  I am not familiar with this function but Pelican seems to more about it since he created EOScard utility.  Anyway the issue was that EOScard utility had downloaded some files plus there were already some files in the card, the user noticed that in the fir file area it showed like 2 files so the user had to select the correct fir file for the EOScard utility to properly prepare the card! One of the files was for Mac and the other was for windows.

Also on most cameras, except 5D3, if you enable the camera bootflag via firmware update, and then do it again you will be disabling the bootflag. In the 5D3 you cannot disable the camera bootfalg.  It is and ON-OFF process, so if you have a camera working and set the camera flag using the *.fir file you will be disabling the flag in the camera and ML wont start.

So remember to make a card bootable use EOScard utility, and to set the camera flag use *.fir file and do the firmware update.

And... always use a card reader if you want this to work properly!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Folgende Kameras erlauben RAW Video zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt. (21.05.2013).

Is there a version for 600D? Can only find for 6D, 5D2 and 5D3.
Found 600D files at "Tragic Lantern"? Why Tragic?
But the Modules only have 2 files:MAGIC.SYM (53K), raw_rec.mo (25K)
and the autoexec.bin is only 520K.

I dont know, the developer chose that title.

All looks ok.  I dont know why there is no raw_rec.o but probably dont need it for that camera or it is missing...

Thanks a lot for all your help!
No problems to replace autoexec.bin and copy the Module folder with 2 files into ML folder. I used 600D -- Compiles & Builds Builds.
Some try and error to get raw_rec in function, but it worked! Have to test settings for my SanDisk Extreme 32GB SDHC 30MB/s. So fare I got plenty of buffer errors.
I have to say that it's absolute fantastic the way Magic Lantern extend Canon cameras potential!
And it's even more remarkable that Canon seems to ignore this amazing opportunity!!

It stopped because you hit the 4gb limit, not because your card is slow.  The thing is about these komputerbay cards is that they often corrupt your footage when you upload the footage back to your computer. Several people just on these forums have complained about this issue.

Hello
I'have tried many many times to install the ML RAW
software with no succes.
The manufacturer's software still working but now
when i try (and i follow each step of the tuto) to start the 5dmark iii with the SD
prepared correctly nothing happens. The 5D simply refuse to start with the hack (stay off).
Is it possible that's something remain on the "hardware" like a trace of my previous attemps
witch blocks any other attempt?

Sorry for my english (i'm french).

And you are doing a great job!!!!

Ok so i will try to explain myself for the last attempt (because i don't remember exactly the many previous attempts).

So to be sure, i re-install the canon 1.1.3 original software and it's work.
After i take an 16 GO SD card witch i format with the 5D.
I put the SD in The PC and put inside all the files required: ML, 5D3-113-bootflag.fir and the autoexec.bin.
Then i prepare it with the EOScard 1.32 and it says "success".
After i put the SD card back into the 5D (red light twinkles) but when i put the power on nothing happens (i try to pull out the battery too).

I hope my story will help you.

Thanks for your interest !

If it can helps i precise that on severals previous attempts i prepared the card (an CF at this time) on a mac with the macboot package and the card seemed to be correctly prepared but no success with the 5D.

hope i'm not to much confused.

At least my 5D still works, maybe i should be thankful...

I am not sure..  But the sequence you wrote is wrong!!

The sequence in the manual says:

Put the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir  (Do not put all of the files and do not make the card bootable yet!)

So to fix this error now... Format the SD card first to make it un-bootable!

Now put the Put the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir  on the card

Put the card on the camera and turn it on.

The bootflag will be set and a confirmation will appear.

Now take the card out and make it bootable

Put the rest of the files on the card.

Put the card back on the camera and turn it on.

Imo this topic lacks one important thing: Basic explanation about raw video. What it is? Why to choose? Pros & cons. Could this thread be started with that so it would fullfill the title "Beginners guide". I just across this term by accident and have no idea about this whole thing nor can find simple explanation, all threads seems to go directly to installation and how to shoot rather than speaking about what/why/why not.

Raw video pros:
- "loseless" white balance adjustment (and everything else what adjustable for raw still) in post processing
-> basicly easier color adjustments (especially if you coming from raw photography to dslr video)
- custom resolutions (for example for 5d2 you can now get 1280x720). Is this done with/without cropping the sensor output ie. doesn't change FOV (I hope the first)?

cons:
- slower workflow/more steps (shoot, combine raw video files, extract raw video file to dng's, make adjustments, extract raw to jpg [which probably takes quite long time], make video file from jpg's, then it's finally ready for edit)
-> so shoot raw video only if you know you really need higher quality and can really afford all the hazzle and time compsuption
- limited recording time in specific cases (because of what? limited buffer or something?). see http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0
- file space consumption is N times greater, how much? normal canon 1080i 12 minutes = 4 gb, raw 1080i about how much?
- sound is recorded yes/no?

"The RAW video files cannot currently be processed directly by any video editor. Each RAW (video) file encapsulates the frames in DNG format so we need to extract these frames first." To find out how read this topic: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5654.0

hi there.

Ive been looking through the forum for an answer but cant find anything

Im trying to get raw on my 5dm2. I have installed the latest ML 2.3 and everything is running fine. Myt problem is that there is no Module folder contained with the ML directory.

I have also downloaded the new raw rec zip, all the forums say to copy the new files into the module folder of the ML directory how can this be done when it doesnt exist.

I have tried to put the module folder from the zip file onto the cf card and replace the auto.exe file with the new one from the zip file, this made my camera freeze and not boot.

any help would be appreciated.

Love ML by the way!!

Okay, am I just stupid here, or is RAW video not smack-in-your-face inside the camera?
Installed the latest nightly build. Can't find anything related to how to actually shoot raw anywhere.

I've a 550D, so I don't know if it's even possible, but after reading the chart on what cameras can do it, I assumed since it's in there, albeit in low resolution, it should be possible. Is it just me, or is the function just not present on the 550D?

**EDIT**
Nevermind. I delved into the right section here and found a build for it.

Hello, sorry if this is a newbie question but I've searched everywhere I can think of and can't find anything. The question is how do I get the resolution above 1920? I have been able to do it but now I get an error that says "2048 is not possible in current video mode". I've tried changing the camera resolutions and frame rates and nothing seems to have any effect. There must be some setting as yesterday I got it into 2048 without realizing I did it.

Press the zoom button - 5x or 10x, doesn't matter. Than go to ML raw menu and check the resolutions. Additionally you can set preview to ML greyscale. To have a good framing (black white though) turn global draw ON.

Hi, I did post this in another section but I did not get any replies, so figure I would try again here..   I am brand spankin new here so please be gentle if this is a really dumb question   So I have been following the Canon Raw development and like everyone else here I am sure, think it is exciting times indeed!  Now with the price drop of the MIcro 4/3's BMCC, it makes it both confusing and exciting times ahead...

So, as pointed out, this is a potentially very stupid newbie question but here goes anyway....

Does the new Canon Firmware that enables you to record to an external recorder have any place with the Magic Lantern Raw developments with the 5DIII?  There seems to be so much talk about recording with a fast enough CF card for shooting RAW, does there exist or is it at all likely in the future to exist, a possibility to record RAW on the 5DIII onto one of these external recorders?

Ok, thanks so much, look forward to hearing any thoughts or responses.

Hello everybody.

I need help. Im using the ML in my 5D MIII.

Everything is working perfectly except that I can not open the last clip of each CF card.

When the camera shows me that there is no more space available it stops reccording, and this clip is not saved properly because later I can not open it.

It is, for example, a 2GB RAW clip but I can convert it in DNG files. It says that the file is empty.

Can someone help me to recover this files? I need to fix these clips!

Im using 16GB CF Card.
Thankssss

Question on Alex or anybody from the team,

I am ML user from the very beginning on 550d.
Since today on 5d3.
So there is for me a very important question.

is ML gonna stay on Canon 5d3 firmware 1.1.3?
There are many improvements  for photographer on 1.2.1 to 1.1.3
and there´s no good filmmaker without good photographer.

Thankful for your work and achievements(donatet 3x),

Note: ... and audio recording with RAW video is not available yet.

<snip>

For what it's worth, in raw on the 60D, I film 1280x536, which is a fairly standard widescreen aspect ration of 2.39:1.

With the big buffer on this camera, I get about 35 seconds filming time per take. This certainly would be restrictive in many uses, but I find that it's quite manageable for narrative films.

https://startpage.com/do/search?q=average+shot+length+feature+films

Like many things in life, the "restrictions" imposed by Magic Lantern have actually opened opportunities for me, as beginning to use ML raw was the start of my shooting in real cinematic widescreen form: until then, I had been composing and filming in 16:9 "video" aspect ratio.

Thanks again RenatoPhoto for starting this primer :)

Hello,
we are trying to put ML on our 5D Mark3 with 1.2.1 fw and we have few problems. We read the begginers guide but almost on start there is problem.

1. Format card on PC (must use card reader) and then format on Camera.
2. Put card back on card reader (PC) and copy the fir file to the card root directory.
3. Put card back on Camera and go to the Firmaware update section (Canon Menu) do an update with the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir
Here in point 3. we try to install the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir but the after click on firmawere version (with 1.2.1 in camera) to update/set bootflag on LCD appear "Loading" for a milisecond then the LCD turn off and the red led keep blinking every 2-3 sec. This goes about 10min so we turn off the camera (nothing happened) and then put out the battery. We thought that is some problem with the original 1.2.1 fw so we downgrade the firmware "official way" with file from this site - http://pel.bencemate.com/eoscard/. This procedur was succesful and now we have fw 1.1.3 on camrea.

Then we try to go on with the guide so we format the card (in pc then in camera) then we put the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir on card and try to set the bootflag. Then this happened...
So its said "Could not find ML files".

We also watched this video http://youtu.be/2AgyiJmrio4 and there the guy use another procedure to put the ML on camera. After upgrade/downgrade the fw to 1.1.3 he put all ML files on the card, also autoexec.bin and the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir. Then he use the EOScard.exe to make the card bootable. Then he put the card to the camera and proceed to update/set bootflag procedure. On his video everything goes ok. But one thing is different. He said and same is writen on guide that you need to check two files.. magic.sym and raw_rec.mo. But in the package that we downloade from ML today (build 2014-01-20 01:11:09 +0100) is only the raw_rec.mo .. the magic.sym file is missing. Why? We found the file in description of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7pn5Q6wNMY but we dont know if we can combine this file with the new ones from latest build.

Why is in the official guide another process (wich doesnt work for us) then in the videotutorials (that we thing can work)?
Thank for reply.

Press the zoom button - 5x or 10x, doesn't matter. Than go to ML raw menu and check the resolutions. Additionally you can set preview to ML greyscale. To have a good framing (black white though) turn global draw ON.

I manage to go above 1920 pushing the zoom button, however I'm not sure if the ML greyscale is showing the proper frame. If it does the 2048 is just a bit larger than a 5x crop in the sensor... is it correct?

Had numerous issues trying to do the install at first from watching numerous youtube videos. Sais screw it and went ahead and followed step by step instructions on the first page and now I have ML up and running on my camera. What no videos on youtube, the ones I saw, Did not include how to set the bootflag on the camera and thennnn going back to format the card again and then adding the ML folders.

I got the "could not load ML files" error as well but the camera kept on thinking/loading through(red light was flashing) and installed the bootflag. Once completed, were it gives the "smiley face" that was blocked out in some glitched type characters, but seemed to fully process. Took out the SD card, updated to the newest nightly update and formatted card through EOS, put SD card back in camera and everything works as it should

just some notes for any other newbies like myself who run into the above mentioned situations.

I am new to this and have spent hours figuring out how to install and get the RAW video to work. But its worth it! The ML guys deserve a medal for their work.

I enclose a couple of short videos on how to install Magic Lantern and its raw features on the 650D 600D and 700D. I hope they help someone make the journey to RAW shooting on those cameras a little easier than mine was.  :)

Hi, I hate to sound like a newbie, I am not with ML, been using it for two years on my T3i and love it! I am about to buy a 5D Mark III in part so I can shoot RAW but also because it is a step up from what I have now. I know I need to get fast CF cards but any brands you guys suggest?

I am confused about RAW with audio, there are some post that says it is now working but then I saw a post where someone said "WRONG, get your facts straight!" and then nothing further about what the facts are. So please don't react like that, I have tried to look through a lot of the post but still can not find a real answer. I am using a Beachtek for all my audio and prefer that for the sake of editing so it is very important to me to have audio in the camera. It's why I went to ML in the first place, so I could have VU meters.

Also can I shoot RAW on my T3i now? Saw that posted but not which version of ML and links to it. I am using ML V2 from 2012 (I think it was called Christmas build).

Thanks, Everett McEwan

So I bought the camera, 5D MArk III, and now I will start gathering the rest, you said Lexar 1000X cards are great but other people have talked about KOMPUTERBAY being good too, I am safe with those also correct?

http://www.komputerbay.com/komputerbay-128gb-professional-compact-flash-cf-card-1000x-write-100mb-s-read-150mb-s-extreme-speed-udma-7-raw-firmware-bootable.html

And what does this mean? It says "This card is NOT firmware-bootable, specially made for the Canon 5D Mark III." ML runs from the card so I am guessing they mean this won't work for ML? So I want the normal one above?
http://www.komputerbay.com/komputerbay-128gb-professional-compact-flash-card-cf-1050x-write-100mb-s-read-160mb-s-extreme-speed-udma-7-raw-not-firmware-bootable.html

Second question; which nightly build is the one I want to start with for the Mark III? I notice the latest stable release v2.3 does not include Mark III, only Mark II, or does it work on Mark III also? I am running v2 on my T3i now.

Third question; Editing, again I want to do RAW but might not shoot everything in it (like interviews for example- file space) and I am already wondering if FCP 7 could handle it (have a 2.66 gzh dual core mac book pro) or do I need a whole new system and FCP 10 (X)? Asked the Mac geniuses about 4K when looking at FCP 10 and of course they did not know (not genus on that) and would think RAW would be as much of a drag on the system as 4K. Would the back and forth between RAW and regular 1080 be an issue when editing? Where should I go on here about that? I have seen workflow discussed like how to convert the files (Codec) before editing, but not much about what edit systems can handle.

Thanks, and again sorry for the "newbie" sounding questions. Everett

Which build works the best for 5D mk ii ?
I have following the nightlies for a while, but since february (i think) the raw_rec module does not seem to work (gives me early stop (8-11) error). Does anyone know a good release or a deadly combo of modules of different release dates (i know, don't). By the way - the MLV works for me without problem.
Cheers

In The "Quick Setup Guide for 5D3"
3. Put card back on Camera and go to the Firmware update section (Canon Menu) do an update with the 5D3-113-bootflag.fir  Make sure you have a full battery, a dead battery during firmware update could be a disaster.
4. Once the firmware update is finished you have set the bootflag on your camera.

Not clear on what is to be used for Update.  Do you mean "7D000203.FIR" with "5D3-113-bootflag.fir"?
Hope my question is clear. Thank you

    5DM3 / 7D
I'm am a virgin to your site.  So from your response "5DM3 / 7D" does not mean interchangeable is that correct?

I have tried for 3 days to navigate the web and MagicLantern Forums about setting up 7D for Raw video.  I have discovered that very experienced and knowledgeable people sometimes and not with malice leave out pieces of info due to having been at it so long it is sometimes hard to remember the beginner they once were.  Anyway I thank you for your comment.

I have check out "HOW TO: A guide to installing ML on the 7D with recent features" and the "7D Raw Thread" I am a MacPro User.  I installed Windows 7 on the Mac so as to be able to set up a CF card with EOScard (Successful so far).

I have also been able to install ML on the 7D without EOScard.  Obviously, no modules.  So I am trying to find a Linear forum thread or web location that leave each step clearly for a newbie like my self.  I would clearly accept yours or anyone's guidance about how to proceed in accomplishing this task for the 7D whether that would be another forum for a mac user like myself.

If i'm to new, i must apologize, however I do recognize an exceptional idea when i see one for getting better coverage of video stories.  Again any clear clear directions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time and comments are more then welcome.

Do you have managed to run ML at startup? Means: Turn cam on, wait for the boot process to complete, press trashcan button and ML's menu appears?
If so: Download latest Nightly Build for 7D (top of page -> Downloads -> Browse Nightly Builds), extract content and copy content to the card, overwriting AUTOEXEC.BIN and ML directory.

Thank you for your response Walter.  Sorry about the delay I had to teach acting & performance classed.  I was able to get ML at startup.  Last night I tried newest to oldest Builds.  with Autoexec.bin and ML directory.  Each one after a fresh start.  Once Loaded the fonts below the main menu and menu names all became unintelligible gibberish in view. As soon as I put on original Autoexec.bin and ML directory all returned to normal.  My goal is to get to raw filming.  I am again going through the process of trying to set up from scratch a bootable system as described with windows and ECOcard ect.  I'm a Mac user so my learning curve has been a little extended.  I'm hoping to come across a linear step by step process for setting up ML with Mac, until then I am very willing to learn the windows process.  How ever from explanation to active process does not always work out as might be expected.
Again any comments or directives would be very well accepted.
Thank you again for your time.

Was able to get ML on and the latest Build.  No Scrambled letters yeah. Still no Modules or Raw Choices.  Root Directory:
DCIM (Canon DIR)
MiSC (Canon DIR)
ML (DIR)
autoexec.bin
xxx-bootflag.fir

As stated in "FINALLY INSTALLATION OF RAW VIDEO"
However it also states that I should have in ML/modules/:
magic.sym
raw_rec.mo

magic.sym is not in this build or some of the others i looked at.
There is "7D_203".  Is this a replacement?
Any ideas as to what I should do next towards get to raw.
Thanks for you patience.  Hope to have success soon.
Again all replies are welcome and appriciated

I have 1.2.3 Canon firmware installed on my 5D Mark III, so I downloaded the ML 123 bleeding edge night build to try it on my camera. I followed all the steps described in this article, but it seems to work for 1.1.3 version and not the last one. ML seems to be installed OK, and after waiting 25 seconds for disabling the boot flag (don't know what is that anyway) is says DONE and tells me to restart the camera. After doing it, I cannot make ML to work. I press trash button but nothing happens...
Any help to appreciated, I couldn't find it in the Q&A or help page.

I finally got my new 5D Mark III and the correct Komputer bay 1000X CF card, but waiting on a card reader to come in the mail. In the meantime I put one of my SD cards (from my T3i) in and tried to get ML up and running, but no luck at all. Does ML only run from the CF on the 5D?

I think I asked this before but there is no stable version of ML for the Mark III, only the nightly builds, so that is what I am using, but I did try the latest stable version (2.3) because it has the MArk II on it, that did not work either. One think I notice is a different menu layout for what is in the nightly build versus the stable build, am I missing something? On the stable build I see the "5D2-212.fir" for example right there in the root menu, is that the "boot flag?" If so where is the "boot flag" for the Mark III? Is that available somewhere else here on the forum?

I see the question above about the firmware version, this camera also came with V. 1.2.3, do I need to back date it or only use the "bleeding edge" 123 (which makes me nervous on a new camera)? I have not tried that version yet.

Thanks, Everett

I installed the 113 firmware, successful, then I added the correct 5D3-113-bootflag.fir and the rest of the ML stuff to my SD card (not the CF card) and after updating it gave me the smiley face for the boot disk, then nothing.... and nothing, no ML at all. What is missing?

I also tried the nightly build again now that I have the boot flag and it said it was missing files (fonts was one I saw) and I had static where the boot info and smiley face was before which really worried me. trashed that and went back to this older file.

I was following the tutorial step by step, (RAW video & ML -- Beginners Guide, FAQ & Useful Links -- READ FIRST
« on: May 20, 2013, 05:14:36 AM »)

When I re-inserted the SD card with EOScard.exe into my camera and turned it on, the camera didn't respond at all. No power, nothing. I tried ejecting the battery and replacing with another full one; the red light blinked once per usual, but flipping the "ON" switch still did nothing.

Did I just destroy my camera? Any suggestions for recovery?

Hi guys, i'm having some troubles converting MLV video files. I bought Rawmagic from the app store.

-MLV files are about 4gb (1 minute couse i prefer don't merge),

when i convert them into dng frames, Rawmagic find a missing frame and make a shorter conversion and a limited number of frames.

everytime i convert the frames into a .mov file with after effects the movie is sorter than the one I shooted.

I tried many times and nothing change... In Rawmagic there are no menus to force conversion..
I'm worried, I can't afford to loose so much work..

Please help.. :'(

Couple Quick Questions when shooting RAW:

On the Canon 5D Mark III I noticed the ML Grey scale Preview and the Canon Live View looked similar for 1920 X 1080 RAW.

If you have any suggestions for framing up my shots for RAW video, I'd appreciate it.

The only reliable preview for framing is the greyscale one.

When I try and record RAW in my 7D I seem to lose exposure control and everything blows out - decreasing ISO, decreasing aperture and increasing shutter speed seems to have no effect - Only way I could get close was using an ND8 filter but was still at least 2 stops over

I'm just curious as to how you guys got this resolution to continuously record on the 60d? I've been trying for days and can't seem to get it. The OP is wrong about the 60D (e.g., as pointed out in this post (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5520.msg91772#msg91772)).  Because of the bottleneck of the SD card, the 60D is very constrained on the resolution it can continuously record at.

Hey guys, so apparently I'm still not doing this right. After finding out the OP was wrong, I started doing more tests. I tried 1280x536 but only managed to squeeze about 21 seconds out of it. So I dropped down to what I assumed was the continuous recording for 24fps, 960x540. However, I was only able to get something like 30-35 seconds out of it.

So then I went widescreen to 2.39:1 at 960x401 and got up to almost a minute. Do these numbers sound right? Or am I still doing something wrong? Because everywhere I go I see numbers completely different than mine. Also, I'm using Global Draw: Off while recording and ML grayscale as the liveview. Any help, again, would be greatly appreciated.

Read Speed (buffer=15625k) 18.6MB/s
Write Speed (buffer=4096k) 9.9MB/s
Read Speed (buffer=4096k) 20.6MB/s
Write Speed (buffer=3906k) 9.4 MB/s
Read Speed (buffer=3906k) 20.5MB/s
Write Speed (buffer=2048k) 9.2MB/s
Read Speed (buffer=2048k) 20.2MB/s
Write Speed (buffer=1953k) 9.8MB/s
Read Speed (buffer=1953k) 19.6MB/s
Write Speed (buffer=128k) 5.8MB/s
Read Speed (buffer=128k) 9.8MB/s

60D is limited to about 21 MByte/s. And that's the whole story.
No way to get rid of it. You have limited resolution/record time.

Oh, I knew the limit of 21Mb/s. I was stuck because that document says that the 60d's max res for continuous shooting at 24fps is 960x540. I can't record more than 30 seconds-ish before it skips and stops on me. Did my benchmark results show if my card is a lemon or did they seem fine? Because I have no idea how else to get it to record continuously for me.

Enter video mode, press info button until most screens are off (GD off!) and run benchmark again. After finishing you will get a file BENCHx.PPM located in card's root directory. You may edit it with Photoshop CS or other tools.
Look for the highest numbers for write. If they are close to 21 MByte in playback/video mode the cards are doing fine. If not they are not.

I'm hitting +/- 21.x on the Read Speed but around 9-10ish on the Write Speed. Is that fine? If it is, what else would be the issue with why I'm getting skipped frames on low resolution?

Hi

I have loaded the latest nightly build on to my 6D and loaded the RAW module and rebooted the camera. I can turn on RAW shooting in the video menu but can't set resolution or aspect ratio (both currently set at zero). If I press Q I get to the menu and can scroll up and down but if I choose a value it won't select (using the Set button).

Any thoughts please?

My workflow for fast editing the 5D mk3 ML RAW (should work on slower computers also because of Prores 422 conversion!) http://philipbloom.net/forum/threads/5d-mk3-%E2%80%93-ml-raw-convenient-workflow.65971/ (http://philipbloom.net/forum/threads/5d-mk3-%E2%80%93-ml-raw-convenient-workflow.65971/)

RAW Shortfilm: https://vimeo.com/115560337 (https://vimeo.com/115560337)

I found that having this kind of workflow handling corrections in Resolve and then exporting to prores 422 works beautifully for me at least.

I am installing ML beta for firmware 1.3.3 after my camera was factor updated by Canon.
Do I need to use a different boot loader flag setting file than listed here:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5520.0
I need to do this whenever camera firmware changes, right?
Thx
Mike

Use EOS Utility to downgrade to 1.2.3 and proceed.

I've done my best to follow all of the steps provided and yet when I select the "Video" screen in the ML menu "Raw Video" does not appear at the bottom of the list, mine ends at "Movie tweaks".  Any suggestions?

Has anyone faced some sort of weird halo( kind of like out of focus) from night lights while shooting in raw?
U can see the image below check out at the bottom right.
Was using a 50mm Nikkor, with a converter, at 1.8,  3200 iso
Is it coz of high iso? Or the large aperture? Or is it the lens?
Thanks

you're using the lens wide open at 1.8.
You're seeing reflections or shapes from lenses inside your nikkor, lighted by the many lights in your night scene.
I bet those halos disappear when you stop down to f2.8 or maybe you need to go to f4.0.
But since you're already at iso 3200, stopping down isn't much of an option  :P

Most lenses are not so good wide open, very normal for 50mm high speed primes.
Most of them are soft wide open, others show this type of halos, especially towards the edges.
You can see in your frame that the halos getting bigger on the edges.

Thanks Levas u're absolutely right! I did some test yesterday and at f/2.8 it was a bit better.
Thanks again for ur reply.
