Title: RAW video already affecting 2nd hand prices?
Post by: Andy600 on May 15, 2013, 10:28:09 AM
I just noticed 3 GH2's and 2 GH3's have appeared on my local classified ads board when there have been non for over a year. Also, 2 guys selling their 5d MkIII's have just re-listed them at higher prices. This didn't happen when the BMCC or pocket cam was announced. Coincidence?

Coincidence?

Nope.  I've mentioned elsewhere that RAW video will increase sales.  It will also help to drive up the price of the second hand market.

Will Canon accept this market shift!

I don't think Canon will have a problem with more people wanting to throw money at them now. The wonderful ML Developers have put Canon back in the game.

They need to be able to justify their prices on their top end range.

Bit hard to do that when the cheap shit* does almost as much as the expensive stuff  ;)

*A 5D3 is relatively cheap when compared to a 1DC.  The 1DC used to do everything better in video then the 5D3.  ML just made the HD and lower video quality better on the 5D3.

There will be a shift in the market.  Perhaps the sales of the higher priced products will not diminish, in which case, I'm sure Canon will be more then happy with the increased sales of it's mid-ranged products through no expense of their own.
Then there's the cost of support and a whole other bunch of stuff that has to be taken into consideration.

True! who knows? Maybe the top end cams have even more capability tucked away, maybe the C300 can indeed do 4k RAW and the C500 6k lol. This might force Canon's hand and make any hidden features accessible sooner but if they are true-to-form that probably won't happen.

who knows?

Exactly.  We can only wait and see.

I've seen quite a few people now mention that Canon must have known what their cameras are capable of.
Truth be told, open source devs have more freedom to imagine and show their skills in code.  They're not locked into specific assignments by corporations.
I've seen many a talented open source dev get employed by the company they've been hacking!

I know. I'm surprised A1ex and co haven't yet been approached by Canon or even a rival i.e. Nikon, Black Magic etc. Maybe they have?  ;D
