Could it be possible to fake a video deletion on 550d?
For example, if you are shooting something (government people, army, etc.) and they come to you and ask to delete that video or even take your camera to do it themselves, or in the worst case - they want to delete all in your card. This function then would be very useful.
Delete it and recover it at home.
It's easy if you don't touch anything.
Yep.
That, and they usually confiscate the memory card anyway.
Would it be possible to write or copy a photo or movie to the /root dir so that the canon firmware can't display it?
Should just make it crash the camera when they hit the player. Make them think its broken.
what about hiding picture instead? On a Nikon I had was possible. And I know some graffiti artist who like it :)
and why not a fake err70 like 1% suggested, that get's triggered always except if a couple of button are pressed at boot?
For CHDK there is something similar done with cropmarks, you set it to load a full black cropmark with a message on it (stolen camera).

this made me think:
"what they will do if it's an eyefi? Will they confiscate also cellphone, home Pc and dropbox server?"
Yea, I thought about recovering, too. Does it work in 100% cases if you don't touch the card after deleting?

For me it worked always if the card is untouched
It's good function for ML.
To restore deleted foto we shouldn't make new ones - its't easy always.
I offer to make rename mode.
In viewing foto mode if were pressed Av or Q or something else ML starts rename mode and shows noteless label on screen. After that all presses delete button will rename image file extension.
You could just have a script rename the folder in which the photos are usually held in.
Then when the camera goes to look for that folder it does not find it, and no photos are visible.
