Title: [IMPOSSIBLE] Record only Luminance Values for true Black & White pictures
Post by: scriabinisblackmass on March 21, 2013, 10:39:49 PM
The title says it all, for true black & white pictures, like each luminance value for each pixel!

So we could avoid algorithms to transform a colored picture to a B&W one, I guess it would add quality/sharpness to pictures!

A RAW file only with luminance values!

RAW are RGBG values (CFA), SRAW YUV

But also doesn't it store luminance values also? I mean, some way of recording only the luminance values! :) Or is there a way to do it in the post processing?

I was inspired by this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/860536-REG/Leica_10760_M_Monochrom_Black_and.html

The Leica Monochrom! :)

Cameras have a Bayer filter in front of the sensor (that monochrome Leicas lack), so each photosite receives only light from one part of the spectrum (color); you would need to remove such filter, and that cannot by done by software.

You can convert between RGB(A) and YUV back and forth all day long, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YUV#Conversion_to.2Ffrom_RGB
