Title: Install: unzip autoexec.bin ?
Post by: Mister Paul on December 17, 2012, 03:01:58 PM
Hi,

something unclear for me: do I have to unzip autoexec.bin during ML install process?
If I do that I get a autoexec.bin.cpgz file but I am unsure to have to do that step.

Please, could you tell me if that's needed?

Thanks
PAul

It's not needed :)

Your SD card should like this (with more .fir files):

Thanks nanomad
That's what I have in my card too

Don't you think that this sentence isn't very clear and could lead to confusion?
QuoteUnzip all of the files from from Magic Lantern zip archive on the root of your card.
I am not native, but something like that could be more evident:
QuoteUnzip the Magic Lantern zip archive and drop all of the files on the root of your card.

By the way I have a problem installing the last Nightly buid. I went there:
http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/nightly/
but when unzipped and copied on a freshly formated card I get this warning message: http://cjoint.com/12dc/BLrpD4OfKrU.htm (http://cjoint.com/12dc/BLrpD4OfKrU.htm)

What's wrong ?
:o

Take a screenshot of the content of the SD card when using the nightly builds zip file

freshly formated card ???
I think you do it wrong. I usually install 2.3 version then replace autoexec.bin using nightly build (no need update firmware again)
freshly formated card mean it doesn't have bootflag.

Thanks ecek2 but I am not sure that's the problem:
I tried to install back my previous version (2.3 with 600D Audio Test) and got a successful install

I'm more about a failure of the Nightly build: my install process (?) or the .zip file itself

Oh, I should have noticed it before. The nightly builds contain only .fir files that are not provided with a stable build. It's the third line on the Nightly download page .....
"The files come without documentation or installation .fir (the only exception being new ports or new firmware releases)"

Ah... does i mean, as I install on a 600D, that I have to take the 600D-102.fir file from the last 2.3 ML version and reuse it on the last NightBuilt?
Is it correct?

Yes. By the way, the .fir is un-needed unless the card or the camera are not bootable

He gets the nightly builds features, but he also risks missing updated files inside folders. So, it's not a very good method.

OK thanks nanomad it works now.
So ecek2 was right when he said
Quotefreshly formated card mean it doesn't have bootflag.

But how can I get a bootable card?
Do I have to format it with the OSX Disk Utility from my Mac?

No, just re-run the installation fir and it will set the bootflag for you (or use EOSCard if you're on windows)

Quotejust re-run the installation fir
So when I install ML with 600D-102.fir on my card, it becomes bootable, right?

@MzytengaM
Also in that case I get the ability to use my DSLR without ML by pushing SET button on start,
as discussed here:

Correct, unless your card is a tricky one (some SDHC with a capacity of 64 gigs or higher)
