Title: Is it worth to wait for Magic Lantern @ 650D or buy 600D?
Post by: savange on September 28, 2012, 11:27:30 AM
Hi guys,

at the moment I use a Canon 400D with 400plus for timelapse. In 1-3 month I want to upgrade my camera. So should I buy the 600D because then I can use Magic Lantern? Or should I wait for the 650D-Firmware and then buy the 650D? What whould you do? Do you have any idea how long it takes to create the 650D-firmware?

Thanks a lot!

Get the 600D without thinking twice.

Really? But it would be very angrily for me if I now buy the 600D and Magic Lantern for 650D comes out 3 month later ;) Touchscreen and 5 pictures per second at 650D are very nice =)

So do you recommend the 650D and I should not buy the 600D, right?

Nope, I'm saying that for videos the 600D, to me, is still better.
For stills and everything else the 650 is clearly a winner-

650D may never get an update and then will never have ML. It has more AF points and UHS-1 but what good is that if you can't use it.

Not sure if 650D has new resizing like 5d3 but without ML its a little bit of a consumer brick. Photos should be the same. I don't think the sensor is any better.

So my biased vote goes to 600D. Cheaper + crop mode + 100mbps video.

The new digic should be better in low light

Slight edge but nobody tried with cranked up bit rate:

*also reading the comments on that page, quite a few people angry at canon thinking they are getting ripped off by "minor" differences which would be major if software actually used them to full potential.

Well you should really compare RAW files, not videos. IMHO the new digic shines there on the 650D

The good af points probably shine there too. When it gets dark I can't focus for anything without doing it myself.

Nobody can tell you how long it'll take for ml to be ported to the 650d, and in 3 month you can nearly wait another 3 month for the 700d with a really updated sensor. The real difference of the 650d is the much better af system (the cross sensors of the 60d I have, I wouldn't want to have any less), so you have to decide for yourself how much that's worth to you. Or you could also just get a (used) 60d that has ml and ok af :-)

Thanks for help. 60D is a too expensive for me and I don't know if that is 300 Euro more worth. 600D now has a really good price. I also was happy with 400D - only the low-resulution-display is too bad so I want an upgrade. Also the display of 600/650D is more flexible. I did a lot of astro-picx so I need that.

In that case and since you come from the 400d: Just get the 600d, it has (nearly) the same sensor as the 650d. And it runs ml now, there's no telling how long it'll take for ml to be ported on the 650d. Alex is busy with the 5d3, and maybe after that it'll be the new 6d that interests people more. And as I wrote, in 2013 Canon is likely to replace the whole aps-c line with new models due to a sensor upgrade, so waiting to buy the 650d does not seem to make sense for me.

600D video better than 60D... I think only 5D3/5D2 can do any better. Also 4GB limit is patched. For timelapse/stars and other photography needs the 60D has better build quality and more cross type AF points. If you get the 650D you're at the mercy of canon releasing an update + people actually developing it. With 650D you will be missing all astro helper stuff from ML and will be forced to use stock canon software designed with idiot consumers in mind. Throw that 300 euro to lenses.

@ 1%: Yes you are right I think I will order the 600D and also buy for 300 Euro an additional lense (Tamron 70-300mm). With 400D I have a Tamron 17-50mm (no VC) and very happy with that lense...

Also 4GB limit is patched.

Wait, wait, wait. What do you mean by this? It it any relevance to 600d? Please explain, I'm a little bit confused.

Unless something goes wrong, the upcoming version of MagicLantern should allow you to bypass the 4G/30min limit on the 600D (and possibly 1100D and 5D3) where exfat is supported. You'll still need to run a little executable to patch the video files afterward.

Well... there is one thing that I don't like to be in a stable release: cache hacks. Reason: I can crash easily the 5D2 with it, and the 60D flickers the screen at startup. Who knows what side effects it might have...

Of course, as research tool, it's the ultimate hack, but for a stable release... not quite there IMO.

Thanks guys I just bought the 600D and installed Magic Lantern successfully. I love the timelapse-function :) There is only one bad thing at 600D. With 400D i was wont that the display goes black if i look through the viewfinder. It seems that the 600D has no sensors for that feature.

Congratulations Savange :)

To turn off the LCD when using the viewfinder (photo modes) just press the DISP button ;)

User proofing keep it out of the ML tree.

btw, I will re-port to new menus when they stop receiving major changes. have to fix things like audio showing warnings when recording it while canon audio is off, etc.
