Title: Canon 70D Test Footage
Post by: kilobyte on January 07, 2023, 12:02:42 AM
Hello!

I am new to the forum and wanted to share a very short test shoot of the 70D.

https://youtu.be/iHje0VyM8zI

Theres not much talk about this camera, even though it has the same hardware capabilities as the EOS M and then some.

I think its the only ML camera to have dual pixel autofocus, plus having the tilting screen is really handy. I up/downgraded from the 5D3.

Anyways, let me know your opinions on my video if you have any, looking forward to sharing more footage with this camera.  :)

Woah that looks amazing!
I cannot believe how sharp and clear that looks considering how terrible some of the other video I've seen shot with this camera is.
I think your color grading looks great too. You managed to keep the scene really cool looking while preserving the color in the passing cars and signs.
I'd love to see the capabilities of this camera get pushed as far as the EOS M's too. Its a shame one of the most active developers literally does not own the camera body 💀

Me and names_are_hard have this camera actually, but we either have no time to work on it or it's low priority.

I did some work for 70D in my repo last year:

-High resolution presets are possible, got true UHD 1:1 preset (https://github.com/bilalfakhouri/magiclantern_hg_02/commit/321f9c60aab546265065dcbd27ec82f6675dd90f) working 3840x2160 @ 23.976 FPS, but no continuous recording, it seems lossless encoder can't keep up with this much data (reducing resolution works).
-Got 1x3 mode working, (https://github.com/bilalfakhouri/magiclantern_hg_02/commit/db0e55c5ab24d5349acaddddb1c5cf1aa7c6b925) it seems limited because of DualPixel sensor, not quite sure yet.
-Improved SD Overclocking stablitly (https://github.com/bilalfakhouri/magiclantern_hg_02/commit/40e9a47fb90a69f79cd23bf8c12eb477825177f2) on 70D.
-Improved RAW recording stablitly (https://github.com/bilalfakhouri/magiclantern_hg_02/commit/2892f141b95555f340d888ec8f1cb1c2af9a37e6), all video modes are stable except for 720p @ 60 FPS.

I didn't release a build yet, I want to fix some bugs first, like FPS override glitch (https://github.com/bilalfakhouri/magiclantern_hg_02/commit/9bbfee75ce6353cffd4a14aaa370e4a863424917).

But unfortunately, there is no time for me to work on it for now.

Really appreciate all the developers here for putting in the time and effort they do. Seems kind of silly to still activley develop firmware for 10+ year old cameras but the ammount of people still getting use out of them because of you guys is just as crazy.

If you find the time/passion to work on the 70D again, I'll try to do what little testing and give whatever feedback I can on the new build (considering I'm just a hobbyist). I understand you are likley on to bigger and better things by now though.

Godspeed,
-Noah

Thanks for the appreciation :)

Work on older cams isn't wasted, ML tries to be a framework that allows the same code to work on many cameras.  It's harder to port to a new generation of cams so less people attempt it.  However, this is most of what I work on.

When new cams are added (e.g. see recent work on 200D, 7D2, R), features that work on old cams can be enabled.  This does require additional work, but less than if the features hadn't been made at all!

I think supporting old cameras makes them useful to someone, which mean less e-waste. It is a good thing in general :)
And it makes better video quality and other options accessible to people who can not afford professional gear, which is great :)
