Title: I'm Confused on What Storage to Use for ML Raw.
Post by: bokeru_kin on January 08, 2022, 09:38:03 PM
I might be extremely stupid so please understand that.

So I've been looking into ML and I'm very interested in it. I plan on buying the 5D mark III- and I've been trying to look into what kinds of cards to buy. I'm a little confused, though.

People keep on recommending CF cards, even though the mark III at least has support for SD Cards. People also keep saying that SD is slower, even though I've found plenty of cards with speeds rated higher than the 85/mb max write speed for the 5D mark III- most being the exact same speed as their CF counterpart.

Is there genuinely a difference between using the formats if both have the same speed?

The SDcard interface in 5DIII is limited to 25 MByte/s (theoretical bandwidth). In RL it is less.
CF interface in 5DIII is rated for UDMA-7. 166 MByte/s (theorectical bandwidth). Also less in RL. But around 5 times faster than SD.
In RL 5DIII maxes out at around 133 MByte/s transfer speed.

Ah, alright. It's a hardware thing. Thanks for clarifying- I genuinely couldn't understand it. Thanks!
