Title: 5.7K in day and night (5D3)
Post by: masc on March 04, 2021, 09:52:00 PM
No matter how much I play around with my 5D3 - I always come back to 5.7K mode, which is awesome. Now I did two very different tests: one at very low light and one with as much light as possible.

This video is recorded at ISO1000..ISO4000 depending on the clip, with the EF 50mm f/1.4, always full open.
https://youtu.be/69zvr4VFkSw

And this video - the complete opposite - I recorded at ISO100, with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II, also always full open, but with a VND8..128 (mostly at the dark side).
https://youtu.be/oNF-c6YX7-8

As always I processed all clips with MLVApp only. I exported unsqueezed and downscaled to 3840x1560. For the night video I recorded dark frames in order to kill all static noise. For the dynamic noise I used the RBF in MLVApp and the (nice) bad YouTube compression :P

I agree! Sometimes 1920 is good enough, but 5.7K is a pretty cinematic feel.

Beautiful movies!
Would you please upload small cut of a low light mlv? I'd like to try grade it in MLVApp.

Wow what can I say. The best part about it is the wonderful grading, so nice colors to watch! Ofcourse the image is really good in this 5.7k mode but the colors wow! Well done!

Do you grade inside MLVApp?

Congratulations for really beautiful work!

Here a short cut of the title clip. I also added my grade receipt. The darkframe is included in the clip.

Yes, all clips were processed, corrected and graded in MLVApp only.

Great video!
When applying your receipt I get very dark image.
And I absolutely missed the part about darkframe on this forum. I'm not sure what it is and how to use it. Maybe that's why I've got such a different result.

Looks like your RAW black and white level is wrong. Did you import it as well? And what version did you try (seems to be an old version)?

Darkframe is very important for low light footage. You can kill a lot static noise with it... and with very high speed.

There is no blacklevel problem.

In your Receipt your gamma is set to 1 ,don't know why this happen.

Thanks for the info. I think I know why it happens... I already use 1.12 (which will be uploaded soon for everybody - little spoiler) and this profile section did change. So the newer MLVApp con load older receipts, but older MLVApp can't load newer receipts (completely).

In v1.11 select profile preset "Film" and set Gamma to 3.46.

Wow, thanks. Will learn more about it. Missed this in a huge amount of other great features.

Thank you very much! At first I used your Receipt in v1.11 and it was very dark, but in v1.12 it was O.K. I was surprised that you used sharpening in MLVApp. May be it is because you were not going to grade video later. And I have not found a darkframe in your uploads. Is a darkframe inside MLV file? Again thank you very much!

Yes, here I used some sharpening, because the EF50mm is very soft at f/1.4 and the denoiser additionally softens the footage. But I used masking, to only sharpen edges, not the noise. I always grade in MLVApp only. The darkframe is included in my MLV. See darkframe section, Int button (vs. Off).

But what is compatibility of the Receipts v1.11 and v.1.12? How to change one to another and back?

If you uncheck "Profile" in the receipt mask dialog it should be fully compatible (for all available options). Profiles are different now - as mentioned - so you have to manually setup this.

As I understand "Profile" in your ElgersburgBHF.marxml is "Film" in v1.12. Importing to v1.11 gives very dark image with unknown profile. There are 10 Profiles in "Profile preset" but none of them gives this dark image. If you set "Film" Profile in v1.11 the image looks just the same as v1.12

@vstrglv: I mean the entire Profile section. If you use it in 1.11, you'll also need a gamma. It should be 3.46 in this case. This should be auto set when choosing "Film".

Thank you. All movements are made hand guided with a Zhiyun Weebill S, and additionally post stabilized.
