Title: 5D MKIII 3.5K RAW SAMPLE FOOTAGE (upscaled to 4k) danne's build
Post by: wib on July 20, 2020, 03:15:54 PM
testing Amazing Danne's 15 july crop rec build seen here https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=23041.475

This is only for quality demonstration, I just put together some clips I randomly shot during lunch break, and be careful the sound might feel annoyig (there was road contructions workers operating near)

So I used to stick with 1080p with the crop rec from 22 july from Alex. Now I gave a try at Danne's last developpement.

I could shot continously in 3072x, in 2:20 ratio, 12bit, and exported the dng's with MLV APP. then developped the mlraw in davinci. No correction applied appart from the EOSHD Film LUT.

I think it's more steady than the version from a few month ago, where I had a lot of "camera didn't turn off correctly, skipping modules" errors. this time I didnt had any.

I rather prefer this way in 3.5K, than shooting in 5K anamorphic, I find the quality better.

What do you guys think ?

Would be nice to see comparison shots although anamorphic would have a much bigger portion of the sensor used. Personally I really like the cinematic feel from anamorphic modes. Slight reduction in sharpness gives a more organic look to me.

ah yes, I agree with you, more organic feel.

I'll try it too, and upload it here.

I absolutely agree.  There is nothing more cinematic than the full sensor readout.  That is why I have transferred almost entirely to 5k anamorphic.  I use the 3k modes only if I need to zoom in with the lens that is currently on the camera.  Because of aliasing, the 3x3 binning mode is less of an option for me, although it also provides the full-sensor vision.

The slight reduction in sharpness is not a problem with anamorphic.  Adding some sharpness in MLVApp or Resolve fully compensates for it and the result is a very detailed sharp image - in my opinion much better than the 3x3 FHD mode.

Yesterday after seeing your post IDA_ML I had to try it to get conviced. So after leaving office, I shot at the same place with the 2 presets.

Overall Im very impressed by the progress made, it was very stable. But I think because I switched from time to time between realtime liveview and framing view (with shutter button, of m-fn button) to free the buffer, I guess if didn't do that, the record would stop. I noticed it's lengh may variate doing that.

Now I notice now how big is the cropping :o but as you mentioned it can be usefull to zoom further.

Here on the left the "5040x2290" and on the right the "3.5 mod"

I think that actually the quality is so good that it seems not a problem to have a stretching in post. I added +70 of sharpness.

(also I slightly reframed the shot because of my lens that is not for full frame; see above the actual framing)
