Title: Canon 6D 1080p 10-bit Raw Video Mode?
Post by: frankvue on June 20, 2020, 01:03:09 AM
Is there a module that would allow me to record 1080p in 10-bit instead of the regular 14-bit? I don't need the 14-bit that MLV Lite provides because that limits the resolution on the 6D down to 720p only. There's no option to change the bit. No crop recording is preferred. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yep, on the downloadpage -> experiments:

10/12 bit raw video option:
https://builds.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/job/raw_video_10bit_12bit/53/artifact/platform/6D.116/magiclantern-raw_video_10bit_12bit.2019Mar24.6D116.zip (https://builds.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/job/raw_video_10bit_12bit/53/artifact/platform/6D.116/magiclantern-raw_video_10bit_12bit.2019Mar24.6D116.zip)

BUT, far more interesting, lossless compressed 14 bit raw, so compressed, but without quality loss, 14 bit raw option (and also 12 bit lossless etc.)
On the same downloadpage -> experiments:
https://builds.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/job/crop_rec_4k/80/artifact/platform/6D.116/magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2018Jul22.6D116.zip (https://builds.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/job/crop_rec_4k/80/artifact/platform/6D.116/magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2018Jul22.6D116.zip)

14 bit raw compressed has about the same data rate as 10 bit uncompressed. So I recommend using the magic lantern in the second link.
(the name of the build is a little misleading, the 4k in the build name is for the 5d3, crop_rec is available, but doesn't have to be enabled if you like, it's the only build on the downloadpage with lossless recording option)

Thank you, I'll give those two builds a try. Also, I read somewhere that the 6D's sensor doesn't truely output 1920x1080 and instead has to upscale it a bit from a slightly lower resolution. Is that true?

True for H.264 recording. Rule of thumb: Divide horizontal pixel number by 3 = "Native" x-Resolution.
