Title: 5D III CF Card Requirements
Post by: Jzpwood on May 01, 2020, 10:40:04 PM
I've got a SanDisk 'Extreme' 64GB with a quoted 120MB/s, which I assume is the read speed.

I can barely write 1080p 14-bit to this card, when I was hoping to do 3.5K! Seems like I've got about 80MBps write speed...

Is this what I should expect? And which card should I buy if I want to write 3.5k?

Thanks

120 MByte/s is just for read. Write is limited below 70 MByte/s. See https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/cf-cards/sandisk-extreme-32gb-cf-card/
Load bench.mo in Modules tab. After restart access Debug tab -> Card Benchmarks -> Quick R/W benchmark (1 min).
Gold standard: Sandisk Extreme Pro.

That's where I got my 80MBps figure from.

So the Extreme Pro should get me the write speed I need to record 3.5K? I'm surprised it's such a step up from my current card, seems like I'll need a lot more if I can barely manage 1080p!

You shouldn't need to write 14bit to any card anyway. 12bit has almost entirely the exact same dynamic range as 14bit. 10bit is the most useful in all cases though (especially when you have a somewhat properly exposed image).

Just shoot in 10bit and you'll still fall in love.

Got the Sandisk Extreme Pro, benchmarked at 117ish in the camera but I still can't seem to record 3.5k with 12 bit lossless or anything else? Don't want to go down to 3k, 8-11 bit works but I'm not sure how that even works or what the benefits are?
