Title: Lemmon - [2:08] Canon 7D ML Raw
Post by: jdub1003 on April 22, 2020, 03:49:18 PM
Hey all! I picked up an old 7D for $200 just for fun recently as a second shooter and beater camera (I also own an EOS R but don't like to take it backpacking). After some research I threw dforts latest build on it and went out for a day hike. Here is the end result of that day.

Camera: Canon 7D
Resolution: ML Raw @ 1728x972 16:9 Exported in 1920x1080
Lens: EF 24-105 f/4 L
Color Graded in Adobe Premiere

Besides the unbelievable size of the files I was working with I had no complaints and it was so worthwhile to achieve the end result here. I'm super excited to continue to use this camera for my personal creative work.

Good to see that people are still using the good old 7D!  Colors look like filmed on old ORWO color slide film.

May I suggest that you try MLVApp for basic corrections?  It will allow you a much better highlight recovery and smoother roll-off in high-contrast scenes.  You can still use your favorite video editor for color grading afterwards.  Also, if you film at 10 bits, this will give you 40% file size reduction with negligible quality degradation in the shadows.

Thanks! I was going for a more filmy unique color style as an end result. This was my first experience with raw video so I'm hoping my technique and style will improve over time.

I actually used MLVApp to convert all the MLV files but was not confident in using the features with the app quite yet. I will for sure try it on my next shoot here though!

I'll keep the 10bit recommendation in mind, I saw the option but figured if I have 14bit might as well use it. Of course converting the files took about 3 hours so I may use 10 bit next time here to speed up that work flow a bit.
