Title: REVISITING OLD (and cheap) 1D's ??? - FOR TRAINING
Post by: yourboylloyd on October 23, 2019, 01:47:06 AM
Hello ML family,

Just wanted to revisit this. I know that it may spark some annoyance within the community, but I have been searching through the forum (177 threads :D) looking for the reason no one wanted to work on the 1D's and this was the best that I could find:

The developers were and are adamant about this: Hands off all cams labeled 1, the Cxxx and all the rest of the profi equipment bunch. Period.

I wanted to propose looking into this camera again. I know the seasoned developers are probably too busy to pick this up. This can be a project for the amateur developer community within ML that have been offering help in the forums and on twitter as such. I think it would be a great way to "train" people (like me), and it could come super in handy in the future of ML.

Here are the main benefits of this (that I can think of):

Sorry if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about (i really don't). I just wanted to throw it out there. I ordered a 1DX and a 1Ds3 recently and wanted to throw the idea up in the air.

  • Most of the 1Ds use Digic 4 and Digic 5
There are 11 cams named 1D. 3 out of 11 cams are hosting Digic IV or Digic V. (Digic - Digic III: 7, Digic 6:1)
The cheapest among those 3 is 1D4 for around 880€.
All are dual Digic cams. Ask g3gg0 about it ... [/list]

Would be pretty interesting to see what magic lantern could get out of a 1D X. Same generation as 5D III but dual processors and dual CF plus less noise.
But I doubt it is going to happen.

Before continuing, please (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2812.msg21355#msg21355) review (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2902.0) previous (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=4436) discussions (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=4236.0).

TLDR: back then, when the rumour about 1DX/1DC (https://nofilmschool.com/2013/01/canon-legal-team-modify-hack-firmware-1d-x-1d-c) came out, we promised (https://twitter.com/autoexec_bin/status/289025017025544192) not to work on 1D series of cameras. Whether that rumour was something to worry about, or not, I don't know, but a promise is a promise.

Thanks for the links to previous posts A1ex. I'll stop beating the dead cat. I just didn't know much about the reasoning.

Looks like the next 1D doesn't need ML

,,with 4K video at 60p, plus the options of capturing RAW video or 10-bit 4:2:2 video with Canon Log, both recorded internally to CFexpress cards"
