Title: lagarith copy of "the process" in 4k on youtube
Post by: 70MM13 on July 19, 2019, 04:37:37 AM
just for the hell of it, i tried uploading the 4k lagarith master of one of my music videos to youtube, and it worked!

i shot it in 3072 1:1 and upscaled to 3840 in resolve.  i can't vouch for whatever youtube transcoded it to, i'm just shocked they accepted the lagarith file!

nice!

if anyone else uses lagarith, this is great news!

I don't think uploading lossless is very efficient, though. You could just upload ProRes 422 lite or DNxHD 422 and have the same quality, since youtube will compress to VP9/H.264...
I would like to test AV1 10-bit Rec.2020 on youtube some day:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV1

Nice video, btw! Amazing quality on the scene at 02:32. Also, very trippy music, reminds me of Kraftwerk. I like it.

thanks for the kind comments.

i too am eagerly awaiting av1, but for me the best part of uploading the lagarith master is in two parts:
1) no need to transcode (nice time saver)
2) let youtube do the encoding so no more guesswork and bad results!

Sorry for the noob questions. Just trying to see if this can actually benefit/save time on my workflow:

Can you explain what lagarith is? You export lagarith from MLVapp? Or Is lagarith something that you use exporting in resolve?

I didn't like upscaling from 1854 to 1920 but I eventually got over it and happy with the results. I'm just starting to play with 3072 on my Mark II and was willing to settle for 1440 @ 2.40:1 but you just convinced me to give 4k res a shot! That looks GREAT. Lens and ISO, if you can remember? What Canon model did you use? And now I'm curious about lagarith, already been on the developer page.

because i was incorporating footage from blender into the video, i did the composition using vegas (old habits die hard) - the output from vegas was lagarith 4k.

i need to change that workflow, but i'm just too unmotivated to fix what isn't broken, and now that i can upload the lagarith files straight to youtube, i am extremely unmotivated ;)

i shot it at iso 109 on my 5d3 (gain reduction from 200) -- these days i do iso111 which is a little better! see my tommy's tree talks videos for examples.  all those are iso111.

the lenses used were:
tokina 11-16 f2.8
rokinon 24 t1.5
rokinon 35 t1.5
canon 50 f1.4
