Title: Configurable Crop Factor Display = Awesome Director's Viewfinder
Post by: Sajmannen on November 15, 2018, 12:01:06 AM
On the latest build for 5D Mark lll I can't find Crop Factor Display anymore. I don't know if it was removed, if it's renamed, or if I'm going blind. But anyways:

I'm a cinematographer and I use my 5D as a Director's Viewfinder.
I make Cropmarks to emulate the aspect ratio of the camera I'm going to film on. But it would be fantastic if you could also emulate the focal length.
Basically a configurable Crop Factor Display

Optimally it would be that you put in the width of the sensor you want to emulate. And then the camera would display an emulated focal length based on that

For example:
Let's say I have a 50mm lens on the 5D and I want to emulate an Arri Alexa.
The width of the sensor on the 5D is 36mm.
The width of the sensor on the Arri Alexa is 26.40mm.
I put in 26.40 and the camera displays 37mm. (26.40/36x50=37)

I'm sure there are other uses as well, but this would be a pretty huge thing for most cinematographers!
Standard director's viewfinders are big, bulky and ridiculously expensive. There are good smartphone apps out there. But they can't emulate depth of field, which is a huge disadvantage.

So basically this would be something that does not even exist on the market :)
