Title: A beginner needs your help: Files not larger than 4 GB
Post by: davisak on November 29, 2017, 02:53:38 PM
Hello,

When I am using the magic lantern feature on my Canon MKIII, it does not show signs of showing it, but the files stop recording after it has gone past 4GB. The audio disappears after 30 seconds, and then the picture stops after 40 seconds. This is not noticable while recordring, the problem uncovers when I load the files unto my computer...

I am using a great CF card with 128 GB space. Shooting raw, Full HD.

Does anyone know how this can be fixed?

Infos missing:
- ML version used
- Converter/Viewer used?
- You have one file with extension MLV on your card. Correct? Are there other files named .M00, M01, etc. on your card?
- Converters/viewers in use?
- Client OS version?

Hi davisak,
I believe the 4GB limit is a limitation of the exFAT file system, not a problem with the camera or ML.
My manual for my 600d says;
      Due to limitations of the file system, movie shooting will stop automatically if the file size of a single movie clip reaches 4GB.

There is no way around that as far as I know.

ExFAT does not have a 4GB file size limit. FAT32 does.
Canon decided not to use file sizes beyond 4 GB on Digic IV and Digic V cams and it applies - for whatever reason - for cams supporting ExFAT, too. Don't have infos for D6, though.

Possibly Canon's logic was that to allow file sizes larger than 4GB could limit the ability to transfer them to other storage.
