Using a 550D. Displays on the Magic Zoom menu show on, ALW, Small, NW, 3:1. All I get after I hit the + is the square focus box and little square that show the position and 5X on the zoom. Read instructions and nothing seems to work. No Magic Focus box appears. No green bars. Using Liveview, P setting and have tried Movie and Manual setting. Is there something else that needs to be turned on? or off?

Any red warnings displayed by ML? They explain you what to do.

Looking for red flags at the bottom is the clue. After "go out of ML , hit Disp, remove canon menu" things really turned on.
There has got to be a fortune to be made for someone to write a ML for Dummies.
